BACKGROUND Short bowel syndrome(SBS)hospitalizations are often complicated with *** is a significant paucity of data on adult SBS hospitalizations in the United States and across the *** To assess trends and outcomes of SBS hospitalizations complicated by sepsis in the United *** The National Inpatient Sample was utilized to identify all adult SBS hospitalizations between *** study cohort was further divided based on the presence or absence of *** were identified,and hospitalization characteristics and clinical outcomes were *** of mortality for SBS hospitalizations complicated with sepsis were *** Of 247097 SBS hospitalizations,21.7%were complicated by *** SBS hospitalizations had a rising trend of hospitalizations from 20.8%in 2005 to 23.5%in 2014(P trend<0.0001).Compared to non-septic SBS hospitalizations,septic SBS hospitalizations had a higher proportion of males(32.8%vs 29.3%,P<0.0001),patients in the 35-49(45.9%vs 42.5%,P<0.0001)and 50-64(32.1%vs 31.1%,P<0.0001)age groups,and ethnic minorities,i.e.,Blacks(12.4%vs 11.3%,P<0.0001)and Hispanics(6.7%vs 5.5%,P<0.0001).Furthermore,septic SBS hospitalizations had a higher proportion of patients with intestinal transplantation(0.33%vs 0.22%,P<0.0001),inpatient mortality(8.5%vs 1.4%,P<0.0001),and mean length of stay(16.1 d vs 7.7 d,P<0.0001)compared to the non-sepsis cohort.A younger age,female gender,White race,and presence of comorbidities such as anemia and depression were identified to be independent predictors of inpatient mortality for septic SBS *** Septic SBS hospitalizations had a rising trend between 2005-2014 and were associated with higher inpatient mortality compared to non-septic SBS hospitalizations.

Computational Fluid Dynamic Simulation of Liquid-Liquid Mixing in a Static Double-T-shaped Micromixer

The laminar flow structure and mixing performance of T-shaped and double-T-shaped micromixers with rectangular cross-section have been investigated using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation. FLUENT software is used to evaluate the mixing efficiency. The numerical simulation results show that the presented double-T-micromixer is highly efficient over T-shaped micromixer. The performance of double-T-micromixer with and without static mixing elements (SME) is also investigated. The enhancement in mixing performance is thought to be caused by the generation of eddies and lateral velocity component when the mixture flows through these elements. Mixing efficiency as higher as 97% is reached within a mixing length of 320 μm downstream from the first T-junction with the enhancement of three SMEs.

Flow and heat transfer of nanofluid past stretching/shrinking sheet with partial slip boundary conditions

The boundary layer flow of a nanofluid past a stretching/shrinking sheet with hydrodynamic and thermal slip boundary conditions is studied. Numerical solutions to the governing equations are obtained using a shooting method. The results are found for the skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number, and the local Sherwood number as well as the velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles for some values of the velocity slip parameter, thermal slip parameter, stretching/shrinking parameter, thermophoresis parameter, and Brownian motion parameter. The results show that the local Nusselt number, which represents the heat transfer rate, is lower for higher values of thermal slip parameter, thermophoresis parameter, and Brownian motion parameter.

This work describes the synthesis of catalysts based on red mud/polyethylene terephthalate（PET） composites and their subsequent heat treatment under N2 *** materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy（SEM）,temperature programmed reduction（TPR）,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT–IR）,X-ray diffraction（XRD）,thermogravimetric（TG） analysis and N2adsorption/*** catalysts were evaluated in the oxidative desulfurization reaction of dibenzothiophene（DBT） in a biphasic *** results indicated that the PET impregnation on red mud increased the affinity of the catalyst with the nonpolar phase（fuel）,in which the contaminant was dissolved,allowing a higher conversion（up to 80%） and selectivity to the corresponding dibenzothiophene *** sulfone compound is more polar than DBT and diffused into the polar solvent as indicated by the data obtained via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry（GC–MS）.

Synthesis of Mesoporous Lanthanum Phosphate and Its Use as a Novel Sorbent

Mesoporous lanthanum phosphate was synthesized by supramolecular self-assembly of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and lanthanum nitrate following digestion in phosphoric acid. TGA-DTA, XRD and SEM were employed to study the uncalcined and calcined materials. Sorption behavior of Cr（Ⅲ）, Mn（Ⅱ）, Fe（Ⅲ）, Co（Ⅱ）, Ni（Ⅱ）, Cu（Ⅱ）, Zn（Ⅱ）, Cd（Ⅱ）, Ba（Ⅱ）, Hg（Ⅱ） and Pb（Ⅱ） cations was studied on such materials in water, 3 mol·L^-1 ammonia, 0.01 mol·L^-1 potassium ferrocyanide and 0.01 mol·L^-1 potassium ferricyanide solutions.

EDCMS:A Content Management System for Engineering Documents

Engineers often need to look for the right pieces of information by sifting through long engineering documents, It is a very tiring and time-consuming job. To address this issue, researchers are increasingly devoting their attention to new ways to help information users, including engineers, to access and retrieve document content. The research reported in this paper explores how to use the key technologies of document decomposition （study of document structure）, document mark-up （with EXtensible Mark- up Language （XML）, HyperText Mark-up Language （HTML）, and Scalable Vector Graphics （SVG））, and a facetted classification mechanism. Document content extraction is implemented via computer programming （with Java）. An Engineering Document Content Management System （EDCMS） developed in this research demonstrates that as information providers we can make document content in a more accessible manner for information users including engineers.The main features of the EDCMS system are： 1） EDCMS is a system that enables users, especially engineers, to access and retrieve information at content rather than document level. In other words, it provides the right pieces of information that answer specific questions so that engineers don＇t need to waste time sifting through the whole document to obtain the required piece of information. 2） Users can use the EDCMS via both the data and metadata of a document to access engineering document content. 3） Users can use the EDCMS to access and retrieve content objects, i.e. text, images and graphics （including engineering drawings） via multiple views and at different granularities based on decomposition schemes. Experiments with the EDCMS have been conducted on semi-structured documents, a textbook of CADCAM, and a set of project posters in the Engineering Design domain. Experimental results show that the system provides information users with a powerful solution to access document content.
