Occurrence of Fluoride in the Groundwater of Kaltungo Area and Environs, North Eastern Nigeria

The aim of the study is to assess the occurrence of fluoride in the groundwater of Kaltungo area and environs. Consumption of high fluoride waters clearly manifests in the majority inhabitant of the area in form of dental fluorosis especially in the majority of the populace. Thirty groundwater samples were collected from hand-dug wells and boreholes using standard method and were analyzed to determine the fluoride level. The results revealed that the Fluoride in the waters ranges from 0.8 to 1.94 mg/l with a mean value of 1.65 mg/l. No clear variations in fluoride content have been observed in both the borehole samples and those from the hand-dug wells. Ca-Mg-HCO3 and Ca-Mg-Cl are the two major water types obtained in the area, which have a good association with fluoride. Negative correlation is observed between fluoride and temperature, fluoride and magnesium, fluoride and potassium and poor correlation is observed between fluoride and chloride, fluoride and nitrate, fluoride and phosphates which rules out the possibility of anthropogenic source of the fluoride in the waters. Positive correlation between fluoride and iron, indicates that the presence of fluoride in the water is as a result of dissolution of biotite within the host rock (Basalt).

The goals of this study are to assess the viability of waste tire-derived char(WTDC)as a sustainable,low-cost fine aggregate surrogate material for asphalt mixtures and to develop the statistically coupled neural network(SCNN)model for predicting volumetric and Marshall properties of asphalt mixtures modified with *** study is based on experimental data acquired from laboratory volumetric and Marshall properties testing on WTDCmodified asphalt mixtures(WTDC-MAM).The input variables comprised waste tire char content and asphalt binder *** output variables comprised mixture unit weight,total voids,voids filled with asphalt,Marshall stability,and *** coupled neural networks were utilized to predict the volumetric and Marshall properties of asphalt *** predictive modeling,the SCNN model is employed,incorporating a three-layer neural network and preprocessing techniques to enhance accuracy and *** optimal network architecture,using the collected dataset,was a 2:6:5 structure,and the neural network was trained with 60%of the data,whereas the other 20%was used for cross-validation and testing *** network employed a hyperbolic tangent(tanh)activation function and a feed-forward *** to the results,the network model could accurately predict the volumetric and Marshall *** predicted accuracy of SCNN was found to be as high value>98%and low prediction errors for both volumetric and Marshall *** study demonstrates WTDC's potential as a low-cost,sustainable aggregate *** SCNN-based predictive model proves its efficiency and versatility and promotes sustainable practices.

A Study of Noun Phrase Focus in Fulfulde: The Case Study of Adamawa Dialect

Focus constructions are syntactically rich aspects of Fulfulde grammar. This paper aims at investigating the nature of noun phrase(NP) focus in Fulfulde with particular reference to Adamawa dialect. The study employed two methodological techniques for data collection: observation and oral interview. These techniques were used in collecting data from different categories of native speakers. The Principles and Parameters theory was adopted as the theoretical framework for data analysis in the study. The study shows that noun phrase NP focus in Adamawa dialect of Fulfulde involves movement of the focused element which is accompanied with a focus marker(FM). The study has identified five different FMs that are commonly used in the dialect depending on the semantic requirement. They are: on, ni, faa, dey and tan.

Geology of the Structurally Controlled Quartz Vein Gold Mineralization in the Dikko Area, Part of Zungeru—Minna—Birnin Gwari Schist Belt, NW Nigeria

Dikko area, Niger State, North Central Nigeria falls within the Pan-African thermo-tectonic event which occurred in Nigeria as in other parts of West Africa with widespread effect on the mineralization of rejuvenated basement and geosynclinal trough deposits. The Pan-African Belt in Nigeria forms part of the Benin-Nigeria (Dahomeyan) shield which is regarded as the southern prolongation of the circumcratonic Pan-African belt of the West African Craton. Structurally controlled, gold-bearing quartz veins were measured and studied in the area from an extensive geological ground investigation. Field and petrographical studies indicate that the Neoproterozoic rocks constitute gneisses, amphibolite schist, amphibolites and migmatites. The amphibolites are intruded by pegmatites. The associated quartz veins are generally concordant with the main N-S regional structural trend. The lithological and structural studies carried out in these areas have demonstrated the relationship between structures and mineralization and/or lithology. The main characteristics of the gold mineralization in the area appear to indicate hydrothermal mineralization in connection with shear zones. This study allows us to predict that quartz veins in the amphibolite can be mined at a profit and a detailed geochemical and resource valuation needs to be carried out for the Au and associated Galena and Ag mineralization to fully exploit their economic potential.

Estimation of the case fatality rate of COVID-19 epidemiological data in Nigeria using statistical regression analysis

Following the emergence of COVID-19 outbreak,numbers of studies have been conducted to curtail the global spread of the virus by identifying epidemiological changes of the disease through developing statistical models,estimation of the basic reproduction number,displaying the daily reports of confirmed and deaths cases,which are closely related to the present *** and comprehensive estimation method of the epidemiological data is required to understand the actual situation of fatalities caused by the *** fatality rate(CFR)is one of the cardinal epidemiological parameters that adequately explains epidemiology of the outbreak of a *** the present study,we employed two statistical regression models such as the linear and polynomial models in order to estimate the CFR,based on the early phase of COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria(44 days since first reported COVID-19 death).The estimate of the CFR was determined based on cumulative number of confirmed cases and deaths reported from 23 March to 30 April,*** results from the linear model estimated that the CFR was 3.11%(95%CI:2.59%-3.80%)with R2 value of 90%and p-value of<*** findings from the polynomial model suggest that the CFR associated with the Nigerian outbreak is 3.0%and may range from 2.23%to 3.42%with R2 value of 93%and p-value of<***,the polynomial regression model with the higher R2 value fits the dataset well and provides better estimate of CFR for the reported COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Background:Malaria during pregnancy remains a serious public health problem,with substantial risks for the mother,her foetus and the *** aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria and possible risk factors for malaria infection among pregnant women in a semi-urban area in north-western *** women are among the most susceptible to malaria *** of their malaria infection status is an important yardstick to measure the effectiveness of any malaria control ***:We conducted a cross sectional study in the semi-urban area of Argungu,Kebbi State *** hundred and fifty five pregnant women were included in the study after informed verbal consent was *** each participant,the socio-demographic profile,stage of pregnancy and attitude to the use of insecticide-treated nets(ITNs)were investigated using a *** blood samples were collected and thick blood smears were prepared and stained with Giemsa stains to check for malaria *** associations between age,education level and use of ITNs with occurrence of malaria infection during pregnancy were analysed using the chi-square ***:One hundred and six(41.6%)out of 255 pregnant women were infected with malaria parasites,with a mean parasite density of 800 parasitesμl−*** was found that prevalence and parasite density decreased as age *** chi-square test indicated that a lack of education and non-usage of ITNs were significantly associated with malaria ***:Malaria is still a major public health issue among pregnant women mainly due to illiteracy and non-compliance to using *** awareness about malaria preventive measures and early attendance of antenatal care services will help to reduce malaria and,consequently,its associated morbidities and mortalities.

Triangle Method for Estimating Soil Surface Wetness from Satellite Imagery in Allahabad District, Uttar Pradesh, India

Soil surface wetness is indispensable land surface parameter in agriculture, hydrology and environmental engineering. This paper explores the relationship between surface radiant temperature and fractional vegetation cover derived from satellite imagery to estimate soil surface wetness (triangle method) in Allahabad district. The pixel distributions create triangular shapes because the range of surface radiant temperature decreases as the amount of vegetation cover increases and sufficient number of pixels exists. A very weak correlation is found between the simulated soil surface wetness and ground measured soil moisture at deeper soil layers (R2 < 0.15) on all the dates under investigation. This is because the drying rates at the surface discontinue to be linearly correlated to that at lower levels (depths). The standing water pixels distort the shape of the triangle especially at lower left edge of the triangle. This distortion is removable. The spatial and temporal inhomogeneity of soil surface wetness is examined.

Assessment of Resource-Use Efficiency in Irrigated Rice Production in Dadinkowa, Gombe State, Nigeria

The study examined the levels of resource-use efficiency of rice farmers unde,r irrigation method in Dadinkowa, Gombe state of Nigeria. Using questionnaire, data were collected during the year 2010 irrigation season from 120 randomly sampled rice irrigators and the data were analyzed using multiple regression and marginal analyses. Results showed that significant factors influencing irrigated rice production were labour （P 〈 0.001）, land and fertilizer （P 〈 0.01）. In addition, the coefficient of determination （R2）, the F-ratio and the standard error of the mean （S） were found to be 0.471, 16.37＊＊＊ and 8.908, respectively. The results also indicated that efficiency values of land, seeds, fertilizer and labour were 1.234, 0.498, 2.352 and 1.620, respectively. Finally, it was found that resource-use among the farmers were not efficient thus equipment, land, fertilizer and labour inputs shall be increased by 78.3%, 18.9%, 57.5% and 38.3%, respectively, while seed input shall be reduced by 50.2% for the farmers to attain optimal resource utilization.

Some Antioxidant Enzymes among Children with Sickle Cell Disease Attending usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital Sokoto, North Western Nigeria

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most common genetic diseases in the world. It is associated with oxidative stress which occurs as a result of HbS unstable character causing a rise in the formation of free radicals. The aim of this study was to determine some antioxidant enzymes activities among patients with SCD. We investigated the superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidases (GPx) levels among 60 children aged 1 - 14 years with SCD. Twenty-two age-matched non-SCD children served as control. The study subjects were divided into two groups;steady state A (n = 30) and vaso- occlusive crisis (VOC) B (n = 30). The SOD, and GPx levels were significantly lower among the SCD subjects compared to controls (p = 0.000). There were no statistically significant differences in the SOD and GPX levels between sickle cell disease patient in steady state (A) and those in crisis (B) (p = 0.998 and 0.555) respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the SOD and GPX levels between sickle cell disease patient in steady state (A) and non-sickle cell controls (p = 0.005 and 0.000) respectively as well as between sickle cell disease patient in VOC (B) and non-sickle cell controls (p = 0.000). There were no statistically significant differences in the SOD and GPX levels of sickle disease subjects based on age, gender, maternal level of educational attainment, occupational group and income (p = 0.629 and 0.476;p = 0.382 and 0.417;p = 0.450 and 0.314 and p = 0.397 and 0.762 and p = 0.553 and 0.929) respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in the SOD and GPX levels of sickle disease subjects of Hausa/Fulani extraction versus Yoruba (p = 0.714 and 0.856), between Hausa/Fulani extraction versus Igbo (0.917 and 0.486) and between Yoruba extraction versus Igbo (p = 0.740 and 0.965) respectively. Experimental Investigation on the Thermal Properties of Gypsum Plaster-Rice Husk Ash Composite

This experimental investigation aims at evaluating the thermal properties of rice husk ash (RHA)—filled gypsum plaster composite for potential applications, as insulating materials. The thermal conductivities of composites of gypsum plaster reinforced with RHA at 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% volume fractions were determined experimentally using Lee’s disc method. The experimental results show that integrating RHA reduces the thermal conductivity of gypsum plaster and improves its insulation capacity. The results obtained from the experiments were compared with the Rule of Mixture Model, Maxwell Model, and Russell Model. It was observed that the thermal conductivities obtained from experiments and the theoretical models decreased with an increase in the volume fraction of RHA. The errors associated with the models with respect to experimental results are on the average of 28.7% for Mixture Rule, 31.6% for Russel Model, and 18.8% for the Maxwell Model. An agricultural waste like RHA can be beneficially used for the preparation of composites and, due to improved insulation capability, these composites can be used for applications such as insulation boards and sheathing, hardboard, ceilings of roofs, decorations, etc.
