Wetting and its influence on the filtration ability of ceramic foam filters

Deep bed filtration in aqueous media is a well-known process for solid-liquid separation. However, the use of deep bed filtration for the purification of metal melts is a relatively new field of application, In particular, the separation mechanism of metal melts filtration is a new area for investigation. The current paper aims at examining the influence of wetting on the filtration efficiency of ceramic foam filters that is an important feature of the metal melts filtration process. A model system was designed using water and alumina particles （〈200μm）. The particles and filter medium were coated to model poor wetting. Thus, examination of the influence of wetting on the adhesion energy and filtration performance was possible. Furthermore, the effect of fluid velocity was studied. To this end, the experiments were carried out under atmospheric conditions and at 20℃. The findings showed that poor wetting between the fluid and solid phase significantly increased the filtration efficiency.

A review of rare earth minerals flotation: Monazite and xenotime

This paper reviews rare earth minerals(monazite and xenotime) separation by flotation. A wide range of monazite and xenotime flotation test results are summarized including: reasons of variation in the point of zero charges on these minerals, the effects of various flotation conditions on zeta potential of monazite and xenotime, interactions of collectors and depressants on the surface of these minerals during flotation separation, relationship between surface chemistry of the minerals and different types of collector adsorptions and effects of the conditioning temperature on flotation of rare earth minerals. This review collects various approaches for the selective separation of monazite and xenotime by flotation and gives perspectives for further research in the future.

The washing of filter cakes, especially the displacement washing, represents an important aspect in science researches and industrial applications. A lot of ongoing researches are focussed on impurities, which are dissolved in the mother liquid (e.g. sodium chloride) and washed out with the identical pure liquid without impurities. The project flushing focuses on systems with two chemically different liquids. The main aim is to exchange an organic solvent by water. This article focuses on the adsorption effects during a washing process with solid systems of different wetting behaviours.

Application of a Particle Extraction Process at the Interface of Two Liquids in a Drop Column—Consideration of the Process Behavior and Kinetic Approach

The focus of this research is a new type of particle extraction process for the transfer of magnetite nanoparticles from an aqueous to an immiscible organic phase, directly through the liquid-liquid phase boundary in a drop column. The particle extraction process comprises several advantages such as a minimum amount of stabilizing surfactant, no exposure of the particles to a gas atmosphere and with it the avoidance of sintering by capillary forces and a high particle concentration in the receiving phase as well. The study presents experimental results of the characterization of the process environment and the transfer behavior in a drop column. The solution of surfactant in the continuous phase has been investigated during a particle-free phase transfer experiment including the measurements of the total organic carbon (TOC) content and analysis of the size of the stabilized droplets using the laser diffraction spectroscopy. The determination of the transfer fluxes, the mass flows as well as the yield of transferred magnetite by ICP-OES measurements provide information on the impact of interaction of the elementary processes at the phase boundary. Furthermore, the transfer kinetics of the process is described and compared with calculated theoretical values resulting from a kinetic approach.
