Environmental fate and health exposures of the geogenic and anthropogenic contaminants in potable groundwater of Lower Ganga Basin,India

The study evaluated the sources and controlling factors of the groundwater contaminants in an agroeconomic region of Lower Ganga Basin using principal component analysis(PCA),multivariable linear regressions(MLR),correlation analysis,and hierarchical cluster analysis,and evaluated the public health risks using the Latin Hypercube Sampling,goodness-of-fit statistics,Monte Carlo simulation and Sobol sensitivity analysis based on the 1000 samples collected in two sampling cycles(N=1000).The study reveals that the dissolution of fluoride-bearing minerals and semi-arid climate regulate the fluoride concentrations(0.10–18.25 mg/L)in *** application of inorganic nitrogenous fertilizers and livestock manure mainly contributed to elevated nitrate levels(up to 435.0 mg/L)in *** health risks analysis indicates that fluoride exposure is more prevalent in the residents of each age group than the nitrate and both contaminants exhibited higher non-carcinogenic health risks on the infant and child(minor)age groups compared to adolescents and *** on the cokriging interpolation mapping,the minor residents of 17.88%–23.15%of the total area(4545.0 km^(2))are vulnerable to methemoglobinemia whereas the residents of all age-groups in 38.47%–44.45%of the total area are susceptible to mild to severe dental/skeletal fluorosis owing to consumption of untreated nitrate and fluoride enriched *** Sobol sensitivity indices revealed contaminant levels,groundwater intake rate and their collective effects are the most influential factors to pose potential health risks on the *** recharge and rainwater harvesting practices should be adopted to improve the groundwater quality and the residents are advised to drink purified groundwater.

Evaluation of factors affecting the edge formability of two hot rolled multiphase steels

In this study, the effect of various factors on the hole expansion ratio and hence on the edge formability of two hot rolled multiphase steels, one with a ferrite–martensite microstructure and the other with a ferrite-bainite microstructure, was investigated through systematic microstructural and mechanical characterization. The study revealed that the microstructure of the steels, which determines their strain hardening capacity and fracture resistance, is the principal factor controlling edge formability. The influence of other factors such as tensile strength, ductility, anisotropy, and thickness, though present, are secondary. A critical evaluation of the available empirical models for hole expansion ratio prediction is also presented.

Silver nanoparticles tolerant bacteria from sewage environment

Silver nanoparticle （SNP） is a threat to soil, water and human health. Protection of environment from silver nanoparticles is a major concern. A sewage isolate, Bacillus pumilus treated with SNPs showed similar growth kinetics to that without nanoparticles. A reduction in the amount of exopolysaccharides was observed after SNPs - B. pumilus culture supernatant interaction. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR） peaks for the exopolysaccharides extracted from the bacterial culture supernatant and＇the interacted SNPs were almost similar. The exopolysaccharide capping of the SNPs was confirmed by UV-Visible, FT-IR and X-ray diffraction analysis. The study of bacterial exopolysaccharides capped SNPs with E. coli, S. aureus and M. luteus showed less toxicity compared to uncoated SNPs. Our studies suggested that the capping of nanopartieles by bacterially produced exopolysaccharides serve as the probable mechanism of tolerance.

Cytogenetic studies of chromium(Ⅲ) oxide nanoparticles on Allium cepa root tip cells

The current study evaluates the cytogenetic effects of chromium（Ⅲ） oxide nanoparticles on the root cells of Allium *** root tip cells of *** were treated with the aqueous dispersions of Cr2O3 nanoparticles（NPs） at five different concentrations（0.01,0.1,1,10,and 100 μg/m L） for 4 *** colloidal stability of the nanoparticle suspensions during the exposure period were ascertained by particle size *** 4 hr exposure to Cr2O3 NPs,a significant decrease in mitotic index（MI） from 35.56%（Control） to 35.26%（0.01 μg/m L）,34.64%（0.1 μg/m L）,32.73%（1 μg/m L）,29.6%（10 μg/m L） and 20.92%（100 μg/m L） was *** optical,fluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopic analyses demonstrated specific chromosomal aberrations such as-chromosome stickiness,chromosome breaks,laggard chromosome,clumped chromosome,multipolar phases,nuclear notch,and nuclear bud at different exposure *** concentration-dependent internalization/bio-uptake of Cr2O3 NPs may have contributed to the enhanced production of anti oxidant enzyme,superoxide dismutase to counteract the oxidative stress,which in turn resulted in observed chromosomal aberrations and cytogenetic *** results suggest that *** root tip assay can be successfully applied for evaluating environmental risk of Cr2O3 NPs over a wide range of concentrations.

Influence of Heat Input on Martensite Formation and Impact Property of Ferritic-Austenitic Dissimilar Weld Metals

The effect of heat input on martensite formation and impact properties of gas metal arc welded modified ferritic stainless steel （409M） sheets （as received） with thickness of 4 mm was described in detail in this work. The welded joints were prepared under three heat input conditions, i.e. 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 kJ/mm using two different austenitic filler wires （308L and 316L） and shielding gas composition of Ar ＋ 5% CO2. The welded joints were evaluated by microstructure and charpy impact toughness. The dependence of weld metal microstructure on heat input and filler wires were determined by dilution calculation, Creq/Nieq ratio, stacking fault energy （SFE）, optical microscopy （OM） and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. It was observed that the microstructure as well as impact property of weld metal was significantly affected by the heat input and filler wire. Weld metals prepared by high heat input exhibited higher amount of martensite laths and toughness compared with those prepared by medium and low heat inputs, which was true for both the filler wires. Furthermore, 308L weld metals in general provided higher amount of martensite laths and toughness than 316L weld metals.

Superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES),for its dynamic characteristic, is very efficient for rapid exchange of electrical power with grid during small and large disturbances to address those *** addition,SMES plays an important role in integrating renewable sources such as wind generators to power grid by controlling output power of wind plant and improving the stability of power *** application of SMES in various power system operations depends on the proper location in the power system, exact energy and power ratings and appropriate controllers. In this paper, an effort is given to explain SMES device and its controllability to mitigate the stability of power grid integrated with wind power generation systems.

MHD graphene-polydimethylsiloxane Maxwell nanofluid flow in a squeezing channel with thermal radiation effects

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) graphene-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanofluid flow between two squeezing parallel plates in the presence of thermal radiation effects is investigated. The energy efficiency of the system via the Bejan number is studied extensively. The governing partial differential equations are converted by using the similarity transformations into a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. The set of these converted equations is solved by using the differential transform method (DTM). The entropy generation in terms of the Bejan number, the coefficient of skin-friction, and the heat transfer rate is furthermore investigated under the effects of various physical parameters of interest. The present study shows that the Bejan number, the velocity and thermal profiles, and the rate of heat transfer decrease with a rise in the Deborah number De while the skin-friction coefficient increases. It is also observed that the entropy generation due to frictional forces is higher than that due to thermal effects. Thus, the study bears the potential application in powder technology as well as in biomedical engineering.

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of dragonfly-inspired piezoelectric unimorph actuated flapping and twisting wing

The nonlinear equations for coupled elastic flapping-twisting motion of a dragonfly-inspired smart flapping wing are used for a flapping wing actuated from the root by a PZT unimorph in the piezofan *** by the piezoelectric harmonic force generates only the flap bending motion,which,in turn,induces the elastic twist motion due to interaction between flexural and torsional vibration *** unsteady aerodynamic model is used to obtain the aerodynamic *** simulations are performed using a wing whose size is the same as the dragonfly Sympetrum frequens *** is found that the value of average lift reaches its maximum when the smart flapping wing is excited at a frequency closer to the natural frequency in ***,consideration of the elastic twisting of the flapping wing leads to an increase in the lift *** is also found that the flapping wing generates sufficient lift to support its own weight and carry a small ***,the piezoelectrically actuated smart flapping wing based on the geometry of a Sympetrum frequens wing and undergoing flapping-twisting motions can be considered as a potential candidate for use in micro air vehicle applications.

Group handoff management in low power microcell-femtocell network

This paper presents an analytical model of group based hand-off management based on bird flocking behavior. In the proposed scheme, a number of mobile devices form a group if these devices move together for a long time duration. Although call delivery or call generation are performed individually, hand-off is performed in a group. Dynamic group formation, group division and group merging methods are proposed in this paper. From the simulation results it is demonstrated that approximately 75%, 65% and 90% reduction in power, cost and latency consumption can be obtained respectively using group hand-off management. Thus the proposed scheme is referred as green, economic and fast hand-off strategy. In this paper instead of a macrocell network, a microcell-femtocell network is considered as the transmission power of a microcell or a femtoeell base station is much less than a macrocell base station. Simulation results present that the microcell-femtocell network achieves approximately 25-55% and 35-55% reduction in power transmission, and 50-65% and 15-45% reduction in path loss than only a macrocell network and macrocell-femtocell network respectively. Thus mierocell-femtocell network is a power-efficient network.
