MoSe_(2)/WS_(2) heterojunction photodiode integrated with a silicon nitride waveguide for near infrared light detection with high responsivity

We demonstrate experimentally the realization and the characterization of a chip-scale integrated photodetector for the near-infrared spectral regime based on the integration of a MoSe_(2)/WS_(2) heterojunction on top of a silicon nitride waveguide.This configuration achieves high responsivity of~1 A W−1 at the wavelength of 780 nm(indicating an internal gain mechanism)while suppressing the dark current to the level of~50 pA,much lower as compared to a reference sample of just MoSe_(2) without WS_(2).We have measured the power spectral density of the dark current to be as low as~1×10^(−12) A Hz−0.5,from which we extract the noise equivalent power(NEP)to be~1×10^(−12) W Hz^(−0.5).To demonstrate the usefulness of the device,we use it for the characterization of the transfer function of a microring resonator that is integrated on the same chip as the photodetector.The ability to integrate local photodetectors on a chip and to operate such devices with high performance at the near-infrared regime is expected to play a critical role in future integrated devices in the field of optical communications,quantum photonics,biochemical sensing,and more.

Demonstration of an integrated nanophotonic chip-scale alkali vapor magnetometer using inverse design

Recently,there has been growing interest in the miniaturization and integration of atomic-based quantum technologies.In addition to the obvious advantages brought by such integration in facilitating mass production,reducing the footprint,and reducing the cost,the flexibility offered by on-chip integration enables the development of new concepts and capabilities.In particular,recent advanced techniques based on computer-assisted optimization algorithms enable the development of newly engineered photonic structures with unconventional functionalities.Taking this concept further,we hereby demonstrate the design,fabrication,and experimental characterization of an integrated nanophotonic-atomic chip magnetometer based on alkali vapor with a micrometer-scale spatial resolution and a magnetic sensitivity of 700 pT/VHz.The presented platform paves the way for future applications using integrated photonic-atomic chips,including high-spatial-resolution magnetometry,near-field vectorial imaging,magnetically induced switching,and optical isolation.

The phenomenon of bound state in the continuum(BIC)with an infinite quality factor and lifetime has emerged in recent years in photonics as a new tool to manipulate light-matter interactions.However,most of the investigated structures only support BIC resonances at very few discrete points in theω~k space.Even when the BIC is switched to a quasi-BIC(QBIC)resonance through perturbation,its frequency will still be located within a narrow spectral band close to that of the original BIC,restricting their applications in many fields where random or multiple input frequencies beyond the narrow band are required.In this work,we demonstrate that a new set of QBIC resonances can be supported by using a special binary grating consisting of two alternatingly aligned ridge arrays with the same period and zero-approaching ridge width difference on a slab waveguide.These QBIC resonances are distributed continuously over a broad band along a line in theω~k space and can thus be considered as 1 D QBICs.With the Q factors generally affected by the ridge difference,it is now possible to arbitrarily choose any frequencies on the dispersion line to achieve significantly enhanced light-matter interactions,facilitating many applications where multiple input wavelengths are required;e.g.,sum or difference frequency generations in nonlinear optics.

A study of the influence of genetic variance and sex on the density and thickness of the calvarial bone in collaborative cross mice

Background:Bone microarchitecture is affected by multiple genes,each having a small effect on the external appearance.It is thus challenging to characterize the genes and their specific effect on bone thickness and porosity.The purpose of this study was to assess the heritability and the genetic variation effect,as well as the sex effect on the calvarial bone thickness(Ca.Th)and calvarial porosity(%PoV)using the Collaborative Cross(CC)mouse population.Methods:In the study we examined the parietal bones of 56 mice from 9 lines of CC mice.Morphometric parameters were evaluated using microcomputed tomography(μCT)and included Ca.Th and%PoV.We then evaluated heritability,genetic versus environmental variance and the sex effect for these parameters.Results:Our morphometric analysis showed that Ca.Th and%PoV are both significantly different among the CC lines with a broad sense heritability of 0.78 and 0.90,respectively.The sex effect within the lines was significant in line IL111 and showed higher values of Ca.Th and%PoV in females compared to males.In line IL19 there was a borderline sex effect in Ca.Th in which males showed higher values than females.Conclusions:These results stress the complexity of sex and genotype interactions controlling Ca.Th and%PoV,as the skeletal sexual dimorphism was dependent on the genetic background.This study also shows that the CC population is a powerful tool for establishing the genetic effect on these traits.
