Investigation of corneal topographic and densitometric properties of Wilson's disease patients with or without a Kayser-Fleischer ring

Background:To investigate the topographic measurements and densitometry of corneas in Wilson’s disease(WD)patients with or without a Kayser-Fleischer ring(KF-r)compared to healthy ***:This cross-sectional study included 20 WD patients without a KF-r(group I),18 WD patients with a KF-r(group II),and 20 age-matched controls(group III).The Pentacam high resolution imaging system is used to determine corneal topographic measurements and ***:Mean age for groups I,II and III was 25.40±6.43 years(14-36 years),25.38±6.96 years(16-39 years),23.60±6.56 years(17-35 years),respectively(P=0.623).There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of the anterior corneal densitometry values(P>0.05),while the 6-10mm and 10-12 mm mid stroma and the 2-6 mm,6-10 mm,and 10-12 mm posterior corneal densitometry values in group II were significantly higher than those in groups I and III(for all values,P<0.05).However,the 10-12mm posterior corneal densitometry values in group I were also significantly higher than those in group III(P=0.038).The central corneal thickness(CCT),thinnest corneal thickness(tCT),and corneal volume(CV)values in groups I and II were significantly lower than those in group III(for CCT values,P=0.011 and P=0.009;for tCT values,P=0.010 and P=0.005;for CV values,P=0.043 and P=0.029).Conclusion:In WD patients with a KF-r,corneal transparency decreased in the peripheral posterior and mid stromal corneal layers;for these patients,corneal transparency may be impaired not only in the peripheral cornea but also in the paracentral cornea.

Steady-state hydrodynamic patterns of ethanol droplet train impingement on the heated aluminum surface is investigated in the surface temperature range of 80°C–260°C using two different Weber numbers(We)of 618 and *** of a vertical train impingement,the droplet train is sent to the aluminum surface with an incline of 63 *** in the spreading length are observed at different surface temperatures for two different We values,which are obtained by using two different pinholes with 100 and 150μm *** greatest spreading length is seen at the lowest surface temperature(80°C)and it continuously decreases until the surface temperature of 200°*** 200°C,the spreading length remains stable which is most probably because of the Leidenfrost *** spreading lengths of the experiments with 100μm are 46.4%smaller than the experiments with 150μ***,splashing angles are observed for both We *** ranges of splashing angle observations are 140°C–200°C and 170°C–185°C for We values of 792 and 618,respectively.

Development of a GIS-based failure investigation system for highway soil slopes

A framework for preparation of an early warning system was developed for Maryland, using a GIS database and a collective overlay of maps that highlight highway slopes susceptible to soil slides or slope failures in advance through spatial and statistical analysis. Data for existing soil slope failures was collected from geotechnical reports and field visits. A total of 48 slope failures were recorded and analyzed. Six factors, including event precipitation, geological formation, land cover, slope history, slope angle, and elevation were considered to affect highway soil siope stability. The observed trends indicate that precipitation and poor surface or subsurface drainage conditions are principal factors causing slope failures. 96% of the failed slopes have an open drainage section. A majority of the failed slopes lie in regions with relatively high event precipitation （P 〉 200 mm）. 90% of the existing failures are surficial erosion type failures, and only 1 out of the 42 slope failures is deep rotational type failure. More than half of the analyzed slope failures have occurred in regions having low density land cover. 46% of failures are on slopes with slope angles between 20~ and 30~. Influx of more data relating to failed slopes should give rise to more trends, and thus the developed slope management system will aid the state highway engineers in prudential budget allocation and prioritizing different remediation projects based on the literature reviewed on the principles, concepts, techniques, and methodology for slope instability evaluation （Lesh- chinsky et al., 2015）.

Dynamo equation solution using Finite Volume Method for midlatitude ionosphere

Ionosphere is the layer of atmosphere which plays an important role both in space based navigation,positioning and communication systems and HF signals. The structure of the electron density is a function of spatio-temporal variables. The electrodynamic medium is also influenced with earth’s magnetic field, atmospheric chemistry and plasma flow and diffusion under earth’s gravitation. Thus, the unified dynamo equation for the ionosphere is a second order partial differential equation for quasi-static electric potential with variable spatial coefficients. In this study, the inhomogeneous and anisotropic nature of ionosphere that can be formulated as a divergence equation is solved numerically using Finite Volume Method for the first time. The ionosphere and the operators are discretized for the midlatitude region and the solution domain is investigated for Dirichlet type boundary conditions that are built in into the diffusion equation. The analysis indicates that FVM can be a powerful tool in obtaining parametric electrostatic potential distribution in ionosphere.

Effective age of information in real-time wireless feedback control systems

Ultra-reliable and low-latency communication（URLLC） is one of the most important scenarios in forthcoming fifth generation（5 G） cellular networks to ensure timely exchange of information and realize real-time wireless control. In URLLC, timely information update needs to be guaranteed since control performance, e.g., control cost and stability, is directly determined by timely control information *** this paper, we introduce an effective age of information（EAoI） to evaluate the timeliness of information update in control process. We consider the control process with two phases: sensor to controller phase and controller to actuator phase. We adopt first-generate-first-serve（FGFS） M/M/1/1 → M/M/1/2 and FGFS M/M/1/1;→ M/M/1/2;tandem queuing models to represent control process and we use finitestate Markov chains to describe control information updates. By studying state transitions, we calculate the average EAoI for both tandem queuing models. More importantly, we analyze throughput of wireless control systems and its relationship with average EAoI, which provides a guideline for URLLC system design in real-time feedback control systems. Simulation results show the advantage of using EAoI.

Guided lithium nucleation and growth on lithiophilic tin-decorated copper substrate

Lithium metal is the ultimate anode choice for high energy rechargeable lithium batteries owing to its ultra-high theoretical capacity,however,Li dendrites and low Coulombic efficiency(CE)caused by disordered Li plating restrict its practical ***,we develop an ultrathin Sn-decorated Cu substrate(Sn@Cu)fabricated by an electroless plating method to induce ordered Li nucleation and growth *** lithiophilic Sn interfacial layer is found to play a critical role to lower the Li nucleation over-potential and promote fast Li-migration kinetics,and the underlying mechanism is revealed using the first principle ***,a dense dendrite-free and Li deposition with large granular morphology is obtained,which significantly improved the CE and cycling performance of Li‖Sn@Cu half cells symmetric *** cells using the Li-Sn@Cu electrode display a much-prolonged life span(>1200 h)with low overpotential(~18 mV)at a high current density of 1 mA cm^(-2).Moreover,full cells paired with commercial LiFePO_(4) cathode(1.8 mAh cm^(-2))deliver enhanced cycling stability(0.5 C,300 cycles)and excellent rate *** work provides a simple and effective way to bring about high efficiency and long lifespan substrates for practical applications.

The design of three-dimensional printing based conformal cooling channels(CCCs)in injection molding holds great *** to CCCs,conformal cooling(CC)cavity solutions show promise in delivering enhanced cooling performance for plastic products,although they have been *** this research,CC cavity is designed within the mold geometry,reinforced by body-centered cubic(BCC)lattice structures to enhance mechanical *** distinct BCC lattice variations have been integrated into the CC cavity:the BCC structure,BCC with cubes,and BCC with *** thermal performances of the BCC lattice-added CC cavity are assessed numerically after experimental *** provide feasible solutions from viewpoints of thermal performances,various BCC lattice structure thicknesses are analyzed in the range of 0.8–*** simulation outcomes reveal that thicker lattice structures enhance mechanical strength but simultaneously lead to an increase in cooling *** examining all the proposed CC cavity solutions supported by BCC,the cooling times range from 2.2 to 4 s,resulting in a reduction of 38.6%to 66.1%when compared to conventional straightdrilled *** contrast to CCCs,CC cavities have the potential to decrease the maximum temperature nonuniformity from 8.5 to 6 ***,the presence of lattice structures in CC cavity solutions results in an elevated pressure drop,reaching 2.8MPa,whereas the results for CCCs remain below2.1MPa.

Discussion on“Empirical methods for determining shaft bearing capacity of semi-deep foundations socketed in rocks”[J Rock Mech Geotech Eng 6(2017)1140-151]

A new comprehensive set of data（n = 178） is compiled by adding a data set（n = 72） collected by Arioglu et al.（2007） to the data set（n = 106） presented in Rezazadeh and Eslami（2017）. Then, the compiled data set is evaluated regardless of the variation in lithology/strength. The proposed empirical equation in this study comprises a wider range of uniaxial compressive strength（UCS）（0.15 MPa 〈 σ_（rc）〈156 MPa） and various rock types. Rock mass cuttability index（RMCI） is correlated with shaft resistance（r_s） to predict the shaft resistance of rock-socketed piles. The prediction capacity of the RMCI versus r_s equation is also found to be in a fair good agreement with the presented data in Rezazadeh and Eslami（2017）. Since the RMCI is a promising parameter in the prediction of shaft resistance, the researchers in the rock-socketed pile design area should consider this parameter in the further investigations.

NVIS HF signal propagation in ionosphere using calculus of variations

Modeling Near Vertical Incidence Sounding(NVIS) High Frequency(HF) signal propagation in the ionosphere is important. Because, ionosondes which are special types of radars probing the ionosphere with certain HF frequencies(between 2 and 30 MHz), work mostly in NVIS mode(where elevation angle is between 89 and 90°). In this work, we are going to propose a new method for NVIS wave propagation in the ionosphere by discretizing the NVIS wave propagation path into mediums in which the refractive index changes linearly, where we solve the ray propagation in each medium analytically using calculus of variations and use Snell's Law at medium changes. The main advantage of the proposed solution is the reduced computational complexity and time. This algorithm can be used to simulate and compare the behavior of vertical ionosondes together with other ray tracing algorithms.

In vitro and in vivo application of RNA interference for targeting genes involved in peritrophic matrix synthesis in a lepidopteran system

The midgut of most insects is lined with a semipermeable acellular tube, the peritrophic matrix （PM）, composed of chitin and proteins. Although various genes encoding PM proteins have been characterized, our understanding of their roles in PM structure and function is very limited. One promising approach for obtaining functional information is RNA interference, which has been used to reduce the levels of specific mRNAs using double-stranded RNAs administered to larvae by either injection or feeding. Although this method is well documented in dipterans and coleopterans, reports of its success in lepidopterans are varied. In the current study, the silencing midgut genes encoding PM proteins （insect intestinal mucin 1, insect intestinal mucin 4, PM protein 1） and the chitin biosynthetic or modifying enzymes （chitin synthase-B and chitin deacetylase 1） in a noctuid lepidopteran, Mamestra configurata, was examined in vitro and in vivo. In vitro studies in primary midgut epithelial cell preparations revealed an acute and rapid silencing （by 24 h） for the gene encoding chitin deacetylase 1 and a slower rate of silencing （by 72 h） for the gene encoding PM protein 1. Genes encoding insect intestinal mucins were slightly silenced by 72 h, whereas no silencing was detected for the gene encoding chitin synthase-B. In vivo experiments focused on chitin deacetylase 1, as the gene was silenced to the greatest extent in vitro. Continuous feeding of neonates and fourth instar larvae with double-stranded RNA resulted in silencing of chitin deacetylase 1 by 24 and 36 h, respectively. Feeding a single dose to neonates also resulted in silencing by 24 h. The current study demonstrates that genes encoding PM proteins can be silenced and outlines conditions for RNA interference by per os feeding in lepidopterans.
