Cobalt,a reactive metal in releasing hydrogen from sodium borohydride by hydrolysis:A short review and a research perspective

Cobalt is commonly admitted as being a promising catalyst in accelerating NabH4 hydrolysis,being as reactive as noble metals and much more cost-effective.This is the topic of the present paper.Herein,we survey(i) the NabH4-devoted literature while especially focusing on the Co catalysts and(ii) our work on the same topic.Finally,we report(iii) reactivity results of newly developed Co-based catalysts.From both surveys,it mainly stands out that Co has been investigated as catalysts in various forms:namely,as chlorides,reduced nanoparticles(metal Co,Co boride,Co-b alloy),supported over supports and shaped.In doing so the reactivity can be easily varied achieving H2 generation rates from few to >1000 L(H2)/min·g(metal).Nevertheless,our work can be distinguished from the NabH4 literature.Indeed,we are working on strategies that focus on making alternative Co-based catalysts.One of these strategies is illustrated here as we report new reactivity data of Co-based bimetallic supported catalysts.For example,we show that 20 wt% Co90Y10/γAl2O3-20 wt% Co95Hf5/γAl2O3 > 20 wt% Co99Zr1/γAl2O3 > 20 wt% Co/γAl2O3,the best catalysts showing HGRs of about 245 mL(H2)/min or 123 L(H2) /min·g(metals).

It has been shown that IL-2 and IL-15 can have opposing effects on life and death of T cells.However,the roie of IL-2 and IL-15 in regulating the fate of other cell types is less clear.In the present study,we examined the impact of IL-2 and IL-15 on life and death of pre-b cells using the bAF-b03 line.We showed that bAF-b03 cells constitutively expressed the private IL-2Rα chain and IL-15Rα chain,and the shared IL-2Rβ chain and γc chain.Stimulation of bAF-b03 cells in vitro with IL-2 and IL-15 induced vigorous cell proliferation in a dose-dependent fashion.Titration of IL-2 and IL-15 in the assay showed that the mitotic effects of IL-2 and IL-15 were remarkably similar.However,the sensitivities of bAF-b03 cells to Fas mediated apoptosis after IL-2 and IL-15 stimulation were strikingly different.Cells cultured in IL-2 readily underwent apoptotic cell death upon cross-linking of the Fas receptor whereas cells cultured in IL-15 were extremely resistant to Fas triggered cell death.The anti-apoptotic effect of IL-15 in this model was associated with increased expression of bcl-xL. FLIP expression,however,was comparable between IL-2 and IL-15 stimulated cells.We conclude that IL-2 and IL-15 have diametrically opposite effect on the fate of bAF-b03 cells,although both cytokines share similar receptor structure and exhibit similar mitotic activities.Cellular & Molecular Immunology.2004;1(2):123-128.

AIM:To investigate the in vitro effects of pantoprazole on rat lower esophageal sphincter(LES)tone.METHODS:Rats weighing 250-300 g,provided by the Yeditepe University Experimental Research Center(Yü-DETAM),were used throughout the study.They were anesthetized before decapitation.LES tissues whose mucosal lining were removed were placed in a stan-dard 30-mL organ bath with a modif ied Krebs solution and continuously aerated with 95% oxygen-5% carbon dioxide gas mixture and kept at room temperature.The tissues were allowed to stabilize for 60 min.Sub-sequently,the contractile response to 10-6 mol/L carba-chol was obtained.Different concentrations of freshly prepared pantoprazole were added directly to the tis-sue bath to generate cumulative concentrations of 5×10-6 mol/L,5×10-5 mol/L,and 1.5×10-4 mol/L.Activi-ties were recorded on an online computer via a 4-channeltransducer data acquisition system using the software bSL PRO v 3.7,which also analyzed the data.RESULTS:Pantoprazole at 5×10-6 mol/L caused a small,but statistically insignif icant,relaxation in the car-bachol-contracted LES(2.23% vs 3.95%).The 5×10-5 mol/L concentration,however,caused a signif icant relax-ation of 10.47% compared with the control.1.5×10-4 mol/L concentration of pantoprazol caused a 19.89% relaxation in the carbachol contracted LES(Pbset of patients using proton pump inhibitors who do not receive full symptomatic alleviation from gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The immune system has a remarkable ability to respond to seemingly endless antigens.In essence,a productive immune response takes place along a well defined but treacherous line,that is to effectively eradicate pathogens,and at the same time avoid causing damage to self organs.This type of response is fine-tuned,at least in part,by a complex array of pathways that either promote or inhibit the activation of innate and adaptive immune cells.Much effort has been focused on pathways that can support immune activation.In this article,we review specifically pathways that can inhibit immune responses and maintain immune homeostasis,highlighting our recent understanding on the role of inhibitory receptors that selectively engage the self MHC class I molecules and the b7 superfamily members,we also discuss the inhibitory Fc receptors and inhibitory cytokines and how such pathways,either individually or collectively,regulate innate and adaptive immune responses.Finally,we summarize new emerging approaches on how such negative pathways can be therapeutically modulated in various disease settings.

AIMTo evaluate the clinical findings of toxic keratopathy associated with abuse of topical anesthetics and the treatment efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT).METHODSFifteen eyes of 10 patients with abuse of topical anesthetics were included in this study. The data collected included patients' demographic information, initial best corrected visual acuity (bCVA), clinical findings, time to AMT, duration of epithelization, additional treatments, posttreatment bCVA, and the results of psychiatric examination.RESULTSAll patients were male, with the mean age of 37.9±5.4y. The patients had received 0.5% proparacaine hydrochloride due to pain resulting from foreign bodies, such as welding flash burns and car battery explosions, for a mean of 18.2±12.4d. The mean initial bCVA of the patients was 0.069±0.100. All patients had persistent epithelial defects, stromal infiltration, ring ulcer, and corneal edema. Initially, medical treatment was attempted in all cases. because of severe pain, persistent epithelial defects and progressing stromal thinning did not improve with medical treatment, thus, the patients underwent AMT. The mean posttreatment bCVA of the patients was 0.33±0.27. All of them, except for two patients, showed improved visual acuity. One patient underwent evisceration for corneal melting and endophthalmitis in another center, and one patient underwent evisceration for severe pain of unknown origin. All 5 patients who consented to a psychiatric examination had depression, had personality disorder, and used tobacco.CONCLUSIONAMT appears to be an effective method for pain relief, rapid epithelial and stromal healing; however, visual prognosis is still poor despite medical and surgical interventions.

The purpose of this paper is to extend some fundamental spectral properties of regular Sturm-Liouville problems to special kind discontinuous boundary value problem, which consist of a Sturm-Liouville equation with piecewise continuous potential together with eigenvalue parameter on the boundary and transmission conditions. The authors suggest their own approach for finding asymptotic approximations formulas for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of such discontinuous problems.

bACKGROUND Polymorphisms of human leukocyte antigen(HLA)genes are suggested to increase the risk of gastric cancer(GC).AIM To investigate the HLA allele frequencies of patients with GC relative to a control group in terms of CagA+multiple(≥2)EPIYA-C repeats.METHODS The patient group comprised 94 patients[44 GC and 50 duodenal ulcer(DU)patients],and the control group comprised 86 individuals[(50 non-ulcer dyspepsia patients and 36 people with asymptomatic Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)].Polymerase chain reaction was performed for the amplification of the H.pylori cagA gene and typing of EPIYA motifs.HLA sequence-specific oligonucleotide(SSO)typing was performed using Lifecodes SSO typing kits(HLA-A,HLA-b HLA-C,HLA-DRb1,and HLA-DQA1-b1 kits).RESULTS The comparison of GC cases in terms of CagA+multiple(≥2)EPIYA-C repeats showed that only the HLA-DQb1*06 allele[odds ratio(OR):0.37,P=0.036]was significantly lower,but significance was lost after correction(Pc=0.1845).The HLA-DQA1*01 allele had a high ratio in GC cases with multiple EPIYA-C repeats,but this was not significant in the univariate analysis.We compared allele frequencies in the DU cases alone and in GC and DU cases together using the same criterion,and none of the HLA alleles were significantly associated with GC or DU.Also,none of the alleles were detected as independent risk factors after the multivariate analysis.On the other hand,in a multivariate logistic regression with no discriminative criterion,HLA-DQA1*01(OR=1.848),HLA-DQb1*06(OR=1.821)and HLA-A*02(OR=1.579)alleles were detected as independent risk factors for GC and DU.CONCLUSION None of the HLA alleles were detected as independent risk factors in terms of CagA+multiple EPIYA-C repeats.However,HLA-DQA1*01,HLA-DQb1*0601,and HLA-A*2 were independent risk factors with no criterion in the multivariate analysis.We suggest that the association of these alleles with gastric malignancies is not specifically related to cagA and multiple EPIYA C repeats.

The Analysis of Handel Variations as an Example for brahms Variations

"Variations" is one of the main musical forms in compositional process. Johannes brahms is one of the most important Romantic composers that used this form. Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24, (Op. 24, 1862) is a piece that Johannes brahms wrote for solo piano in a highly creative style, which was classically arranged. brahms took the theme from an aria in George Frederic Handel"s Harpsichord Suite in b-flat major, HWV 434 (1733). In Handel"s work, the original theme was turned into five variations. With the purpose of exploring chromatic possibilities after the piano was developed from harpsichord, brahms made 25 magnificent variations with an extensive fugue in his work. The purpose of this work is to prepare an explanatory document for pianists who intend to perform this piece and who are not familiar with such work. Also, it is hoped that piano performers will find explanatory points in this composition (e. g., stylistic characteristics) through comparisons with his other variations and start performing it more frequently.

background： We examined the impact of adjuvant modalities on resected pancreatic and periampullary adenocarcinoma（PAC）.Methods： A total of 563 patients who were curatively resected for PAC were retrospectively analyzed between 2003 and 2013.Results： Of 563 patients, 472 received adjuvant chemotherapy（CT） alone, chemoradiotherapy（CRT） alone, and chemoradiotherapy plus chemotherapy（CRT-CT） were analyzed. Of the 472 patients, 231 were given CRT-CT, 26 were given CRT, and 215 were given CT. The median recurrence-free survival（RFS） and overall survival（OS） were 12 and 19 months, respectively. When CT and CRT-CT groups were compared, there was no significant difference with respect to both RFS and OS, and also there was no difference in RFS and OS among CRT-CT, CT and CRT groups. To further investigate the impact of radiation on subgroups, patients were stratified according to lymph node status and resection margins. In node-positive patients, both RFS and OS were significantly longer in CRT-CT than CT. In contrast, there was no significant differencebetween groups when patients with node-negative disease or patients with or without positive surgical margins were considered.Conclusions： Addition of radiation to CT has a survival benefit in patients with node-positive disease following pancreatic resection.
