Objective:To investigate antimicrobial and bronchodialator effect of hydroalcholic extract of polyherbal drug Shirishadi containing Shirisha(Albezzia lebbeck),Nagarmotha(Cyprus ratandus) & Kantakari(Solanum xanthocarpum).Methods:Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by discdiffusion method and MIC,MBC,MFC were calculated by micro dilution method.Hydroalcholic extract of this preparation was investigated for its phytochemical analysis,phenol and Oavonoid were determined by speclrophotometric method and in vivo bronchodilator effect was analysed by convulsion time.Results:The phytochemical tests revealed presence of alkaloids, anthraquinones,carbohydrates,flavonoids,saponins and tannins.The antimicrobial result showed the MIC of 6.25 mg/ml.against Staphylococcus aureus and 12.5 mg/mL.for Escherichia coli and 12.5 mg/mL against remaining bacteria tested,with strong antifungal activity.The maximum inhibition zone is found against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with MIC 16 mg/mL Drug showed significant bronchodilator effect with 27.86%& 36.13%increase in preconvulsion time of guinea pigs prebeated with 100 & 200 mg/kg body weight of extract.Conclusions:The study reveals that the extracts possess antibacterial activity and antifungal activity in a dose dependent manner. This antimicrobial property may be due to presence of several saponins,further studies are highly needed for the drug development.

Herbal medicines are popular natural medicines that have been used for decades.The use of alternative medicines continues to expand rapidly across the world.The World Health Organization suggests that quality assessment of natural medicines is essential for any therapeutic or health care applications,as their therapeutic potential varies between different geographic origins,plant species,and varieties.Classification of herbal medicines based on a limited number of secondary metabolites is not an ideal approach.Their quality should be considered based on a complete metabolic profile,as their pharmacological activity is not due to a few specific secondary metabolites but rather a larger group of bioactive compounds.A holistic and integrative approach using rapid and nondestructive analytical strategies for the screening of herbal medicines is required for robust characterization.In this study,a rapid and effective quality assessment system for geographical traceability,species,and variety-specific authenticity of the widely used natural medicines turmeric,Ocimum,and Withania somnifera was investigated using Fourier transform near-infrared(FT-NIR)spectroscopy-based metabolic fingerprinting.Four different geographical origins of turmeric,five different Ocimum species,and three different varieties of roots and leaves of Withania somnifera were studied with the aid of machine learning approaches.Extremely good discrimination(R^(2)>0.98,Q^(2)>0.97,and accuracy=1.0)with sensitivity and specificity of 100%was achieved using this metabolic fingerprinting strategy.Our study demonstrated that FT-NIR-based rapid metabolic fingerprinting can be used as a robust analytical method to authenticate several important medicinal herbs.

Objective:To study the effect of L-ascorbic acid supplementation on the in vitro development of buffalo embryos and evaluate the relative mRNA abundance of some pro-apoptotic,anti-apoptotic,and embryonic development-related genes.Methods:In experiment 1,we evaluated the effect of the addition of 0(control),50,and 100μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro maturation medium on the developmental competence in terms of blastocyst rate and relative mRNA abundance of some pro-apoptotic(BAX,BID),anti-apoptotic(BCL-XL,MCL1),and embryonic development(GDF9,BMP15)related genes.Based on the results,we chose 50μM as the suitable dose of L-ascorbic acid for the subsequent experiments.We further evaluated the blastocyst rates following the addition of 50μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro culture medium(experiment 2),and in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media(experiment 3).In all three experiments,the maturation and culture media devoid of L-ascorbic acid served as the control group.Results:The blastocyst rate after adding 50μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro maturation medium was significantly higher than the control group(P<0.05),whereas 100μM L-ascorbic acid exhibited a negative effect on the blastocyst rate.The blastocyst rates for embryos cultured in 50μM L-ascorbic acid in the in vitro culture medium alone and both in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media were significantly higher than their corresponding control groups(P<0.05).The relative mRNA abundance of BAX significantly decreased in blastocysts produced after the addition of 50μM L-ascorbic acid as compared with the control group(P<0.05),whereas,for MCL1,it significantly decreased in blastocysts produced after the addition of 100μM L-ascorbic acid(P<0.05).Conclusions:The supplementation of 50μM L-ascorbic acid to in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media supports in vitro embryonic development in buffaloes by improving developmental competence and altering the expression of apoptosis-related genes.

In the present research program, cost effective and environment friendly gold nanoparticless were synthesized using the onion (Allium cepa) extract as the reducing agent. The nanoparticless were characterized using UV-visble, XRD, and SEM, TEM methods. The absorption peak at 540 nm was found to be broaden with increase in time indicating the polydispersity nature of the nanoparticles. The XRD results suggested that the crystallization of the bio-organic phase occurs on the surface of the gold nanoparticles or vice versa. The broadening of peaks in the XRD patterns was attributed to particle size effects. The internalization of nanoparticles within cells could occur via processes including phagocytosis, fluid-phase endocytosis and receptor mediated endocytosis.

With rapid development of infrastructures like tunnels and open excavations in Shanghai,investigations on deeper soils have become critically important.Most of the existing laboratory works were focused on the clayey strata up to Layer 6 in Shanghai,i.***.at depth of up to 40 m.In this paper,Layers 7,9,and 11,which were mostly formed of sandy soils at depth of up to 150 m,were experimentally investigated with respect to physico-mechanical behaviors.The stressestrain behaviors were analyzed by the consolidated drained/undrained(CD/CU)triaxial tests under monotonic loading.One-dimensional(1D)oedometer tests were performed to investigate the consolidation properties of the sandy soils.Specimens were prepared at three different relative densities for each layer.Also,the micro-images and particle size analyzers were used to analyze the shape and size of the sand grains.The influences of grain size,density,and angularity on the stressestrain behaviors and compressibility were also studied.Compared to the other layers,Layer 11 had the smallest mean grain size(D50),highest compressibility,and lowest shear strength.In contrast,Layer 9 had the largest mean grain size,lowest compressibility,and highest shear strength.Layer 7 was of intermediate mean grain size,exhibiting more compressibility and less shear strength than that of Layer 9.Also,the critical state parameters and maximum dilatancy rate of different layers were discussed.

Prediction Modeling and Mapping of Soil Carbon Content Using Artificial Neural Network, Hyperspectral Satellite Data and Field Spectroscopy

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important and reliable indicator of soil quality. In this study, soil spectra were characterized and analysed to predict the spatial soil organic carbon (SOC) content using multivariate predictive modeling technique-artificial neural network (ANN). EO1-Hyperion (400 - 2500 nm) hyperspectral image, field and laboratory scale data sets (350 - 2500 nm) were generated which consisted of laboratory estimated SOC content of collected soil samples (dependent variable) and their corresponding reflectance data of SOC sensitive spectral bands (predictive variables). For each data set, ANN predictive models were developed and all three datasets (image-scale, field-scale and lab-scale) revealed significant network performances for training, testing and validation indicating a good network generalization for SOC content. ANN based analysis showed high prediction of SOC content at image (R2 = 0.93, and RPD = 3.19), field (R2 = 0.92 and RPD = 3.17), and lab scale (R2 = 0.95 and RPD = 3.16). Validation results of ANN indicated that predictive models performed well (R2 = 0.90) with RMSE 0.070. The result showed that ANN methods had a great potential for estimating and mapping spatial SOC content. The study concluded that ANN model was potential tools in predicting SOC distribution in agricultural field using hyper-spectral remote sensing data at image-scale, field-scale and lab-scale.

Comprehensive studies on dielectric properties of p-methoxy benzylidene p-decyl aniline with function of temperature and frequency in planar geometry: A potential nematic liquid crystal for display devices

The dielectric properties of the nematic mesophase, p-methoxy benzylidene p-decyl aniline(MBDA), measured in planar geometry with a function of frequency and temperature are investigated in detail. The complex dielectric permittivity(ε' and ε'') is also studied at a bias voltage of 10 V for planar aligned sample cell of nematic mesophase. The dielectric permittivity with bias voltage attains a higher(> 2 times) value than that without bias voltage at a temperature of 56℃,which is due to the fact that the linking group of nematic molecules is internally interacted with an applied bias voltage.This is supported by observing an enhanced dielectric permittivity of nematic liquid crystal(LC) in the presence of bias voltage, which can be fully explained as the increasing of the corresponding dipole moment. The dielectric relaxation behaviors of nematic LC are also demonstrated for planar aligned sample cell. The remarkable results are observed that the relaxation frequency shifts into low frequency region with the increase of the bias voltage applied to the planar aligned sample cells. The dielectric relaxation spectra are fitted by Cole–Cole nonlinear curve fitting for nematic mesophase in order to determine the dielectric strength.

The usage of mobile-phone among children increased significantly. Children are in their growing phase and cells of their body are rapidly dividing, therefore propagation of electro-magnetic (EM) radiation occurs quickly in children. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the extent of mobile-phone usage as well as its possible health effect. A total number of 455 (398 children and 57 adults, 396 urban and 59 rural) students of age group ranging from 10-29 years participated in this study. An “Information Gathering Chronological (IGC) model” was used for the collection and evaluation of information. The four major parameters, i.e. demographic and public uniqueness, mobile-phone consumption patterns, grievance of the “forgetfulness” symptom to the subjects and awareness about the safety measures were included to get the concise information from participants. We have observed that the prevalence of “forgetfulness” was 23.95% among mobile-phone users. The incidence of overall “forgetfulness” symptoms was 23.59%, 17.46%, 25.00% and 37.50% in low (LU), normal (NU), moderate (MU) and heavy (HU) mobile-phone users respectively. A trend for risk for “forgetfulness” was observed in HU as compared to LU in overall mobile-phone users. Three folds and nearly five folds increased risk for “forgetfulness” was found among HU as compared to LU in children (p ≤ 0.0210) and urban area mobile-phone users respectively. No significant difference for “forgetfulness” symptoms was found in other categories (i.e. adult and rural mobile-phone users). These results suggested that the incidences of “forgetfulness” among children from urban area mobile-phone users were significantly increased.
