Vanillin cross-linked hydrogel membranes interfacial reinforced by carbon nitride nanosheets for enhanced antibacterial activity and mechanical properties

Biopolymer based hydrogels are highly adaptable, compatible and have shown great potential in biological tissues in biomedical applications. However, the development of bio-based hydrogels with high strength and effective antibacterial activity remains challenging. Herein, a series of vanillin-cross-linked chitosan nanocomposite hydrogel interfacially reinforced by g-C_(3)N_(4)nanosheet carrying starch-caped Ag NPs were prepared for wound healing applications. The study aimed to enhance the strength, sustainability and control release ability of the fabricated membranes. Starch-caped silver nanoparticles were incorporated to enhance the anti-bacterial activities The fabricated membranes were assessed using various characterization techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, mechanical testing, Gel fraction and porosity alongside traditional biomedical tests i.e., swelling percentage, moisture retention ability, water vapor transmission rate, oxygen permeability, anti-bacterial activity and drug-release of the fabricated membranes. The mechanical strength reached as high as 25.9 ± 0.24 MPa for the best optimized sample. The moisture retention lied between 87%–89%, gel fraction 80%–85%, and water vapor transmission up to 104 ± 1.9g m^(-2)h^(-1)showing great properties of the fabricated membrane. Swelling percentage surged to 225% for blood while porosity fluctuated between 44% ± 2.1% and 52.5% ± 2.3%. Oxygen permeability reached up to 8.02 mg/L showing the breathable nature of fabricated membranes. The nanocomposite membrane shown excellent antibacterial activity for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria with a maximum zone of inhibition 30 ± 0.25 mm and 36.23 ± 0.23 mm respectively. Reduced bit low power VLSI architectures for motion estimation

Low power and real time very large scale integration （VLSI） architectures of motion estimation （ME） algorithms for mobile devices and applications are presented. The power reduction is achieved by devising a novel correction recovery mechanism based on algorithms which allow the use of reduced bit sum of absolute difference （RBSAD） metric for calculating matching error and conversion to full resolution sum of absolute difference （SAD） metric whenever necessary. Parallel and pipelined architectures for high throughput of full search ME corresponding to both the full resolution SAD and the generalized RBSAD algorithm are synthe- sized using Xilinx Synthesis Tools （XST）, where the ME designs based on reduced bit （RB） algorithms demonstrate the reduction in power consumption up to 45% and/or the reduction in area up to 38%.

Silymarin-laden PVP-PEG polymeric composite for enhanced aqueous solubility and dissolution rate: Preparation and in vitro characterization

The aim of this work was to develop, optimize and characterize a silymarin-laden polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)-polyethylene glycol(PEG) polymeric composite to resolve low aqueous solubility and dissolution rate problem of the drug. A number of silymarin-laden polymeric formulations were fabricated with different quantities of PVP K-30 and PEG 6000 by the solvent-evaporation method. The effect of PVP K-30 and PEG 6000 on the aqueous solubility and dissolution rate was investigated. The optimized formulation and its constituents were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) techniques. Both the PEG 6000 and PVP K-30 positively affected the aqueous solubility and dissolution rate of the drug. In particular, a formulation consisting of silymarin, PVP K-30 and PEG 6000(0.25/1.5/1.5, w/w/w) furnished the highest solubility(24.3972.95 mg/mL) and an excellent dissolution profile( $100% in 40 min). The solubility enhancement with this formulation was $ 1150-fold as compared to plain silymarin powder. Moreover, all the constituents existed in the amorphous state in this silymarin-laden PVP-PEG polymeric composite. Accordingly, this formulation might be a promising tool to administer silymarin with an enhanced effect via the oral route.

The charge state distribution of B, C, Si, Ni, Cu and Au ions on 5 MV pelletron accelerator

Stripper gas and terminal potential play a key role for the charge state distribution in a tandem pelletron accelerator. The knowledge of this distribution is important for experiments performed on tandem accelerators. The charge state distribution of B, C, Si, Ni, Cu and Au beams is measured by using Ar as stripper gas, and terminal potential is varied from 0.3 to 3.0 MV on 5UDH-2 tandem pelletron accelerator installed at the National Centre for Physics, Islamabad. The individual charge state is measured after the switching magnet at 15° in high-energy portion. It is observed that the higher charge states are stable in the range of lower and middle atomic masses of periodic table, whereas higher atomic mass(Au) shows beam current instability in higher charge states. For carbon,the charge distribution at 1.7 MV terminal potential by varying stripper gas pressure is also studied, which resulted in decreased overall transmission with good current value for higher charge states.

Effects of drug-polymer dispersions on solubility and in vitro diffusion of artemisinin across a polydimethylsiloxane membrane

Artemisinin(ART) is a sesquiterpene lactone with an endo-peroxide bridge that is thought to be responsible for its antimalarial *** has low oral bioavailability because of aqueous insolubility,which leads to local toxicity at the site of *** present work focused on increasing its solubility and evaluating its permeation across a model membrane to mimic transdermal delivery that bypasses the hepatic *** this purpose,physical mixtures(PM),solid dispersions(SD) and lyophilized dispersions(LD) with different drug-polymer ratios(1:0.5,1:1,1:2,1:4 and 1:9) were prepared using the hydrophilic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP).Drug-polymer dispersions were characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).Solubility was measured in three solvents:de-ionized water,phosphate buffered saline(PBS) and *** toluene-water partition coefficient was evaluated and compared with the literature and calculated logP *** vitro diffusion of ART was studied across a polydimethylsiloxane membrane from a saturated solution of drug-polymer *** patterns showed a gradual decrease in crystallinity of ART with increasing polymer concentration,while FTIR confirmed no interactions between ART and *** was increased up to 4-,5-and 8-fold for LD in water,PBS and methanol,*** logP for toluene-water was 2.65 ± 0.3,which is in good agreement with literature and calculated logP *** was enhanced,which is attributed to the decrease in crystallinity and increase in wettability of the *** ART flux was significantly higher than that of pure ART(0.12 ± 0.01) with increasing PVP concentration for SD and LD *** conclusion,drug-polymer dispersions with PVP improve the pharmaceutical properties of ART in the order LD>SD>PM.

High Resolution Computed Tomography Features of Third Wave of COVID-19 Pneumonia in Confirmed Cases

COVID-19 which is caused by its new type called SARS-CoV-2 is a viral disease predominantly involving the lungs. Objective: To investigate HRCT features of pulmonary disease in COVID-19 in Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: This is a prospective study that involved 127 COVID-19 positive patients (age 18 - 80 years, both genders) through non-probability sampling was conducted at the Radiology Department, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore, in 2021. All patients with RT-PCR positive underwent HRCT chest. All findings in HRCT chest were assessed. Confirmed patients had positive HRCT. Excluded situations are low quality of images irrespective of its reason, HRCT indications other than COVID-19 pneumonia, and patients who do not want to participate in the study Results: Considering the exclusion and inclusion criteria, totally 127 COVID-19 confirmed patients ranging age from 18 to 80 years with a mean age of 52 ± 18 years, took part in this study. The most important and common HRCT finding was the multilobar ground-glass pattern which was present in 95% of patients. Other findings including, crazy paving pattern, consolidation, air bronchogram, and bronchiectasis were present in 8.7%, 82%, 63%, and 37% of patients respectively. Pleural effusion seen in 21% patients. 16% of patients had mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Conclusion: In our study, the ground-glass pattern was found to be the most common and important HRCT finding in patients confirmed with COVID-19 pneumonia. This important HRCT pattern is mostly found to be in posterobasal and peripheral subpleural locations. Other than ground-glass pattern, bronchiectasis, and consolidation having the air bronchogram were also reported commonly.

Annihilation of Antiprotons in Light Nuclei

CR-39 detectors have been exposed to a 5.9-MeV antiproton beam using the low energy antiproton ring （LEAR） facility at CERN. At this energy, tracks of antiprotons appear in a CR-39 detector after 135 rain of etching in 6M NaOH at 70℃. Fluence of the antiproton beam has been determined using track density. We have also found tracks in the etched CR-39 detector at different depths （250-500μm）. These tracks have resulted from the annihilation of antiprotons with the constituents （H, C and O） of the CR-39 detector. The goal of the experiment is to develop a simple and low-cost method to study properties of antiparticles and those formed after annihilation of these particles with the target matter.

ROLE OF ACULASER THERAPY IN CEREBRAL PALSY CHILDERN (INITIAL DATA & RESULTS)

A single, open and non-comparative study was conducted at Anwar Shah’s First C.P. & Paralysis Clinic and Research Center to evaluate the effects of Aculaser (acupoint-laser) Therapy for children suffering from cerebral palsy (CP) of various types. These children were further classified according to their major complaints. Analysis of the data indicated that 11 children with severe spasticity and stiffness all showed marked improvement (100% success rate); of the 8 children with epileptic fits, 6 patients had a significant reduction in the intensity, frequency and duration of epileptic fits, while the rest 2 cases showed no any improvement or aggravation (75% success rate); out of 5 children with cortical blindness, 2 cases showed complete recovery of vision and 3 had marked improvement (40% cure rate); out of 4 children with hearing difficulties, 2 showed marked improvement (50% success rate); out of 14 children with aphasis, 8 showed improvement (57% improvement rate). Results of this study show that Aculaser Therapy has a high improvement rate of CP children, not only improving the spasticity and stiffness but also the cortical blindness, epilepsy, deafness and speech.

Performance and Capacity Planning of NGN

There have been various emerging trends in the deployment of telecom networks recently. Due to liberalization and technological advancements a common core network for voice and data based on MPLS has been implemented by Telecom service providers. By offering a variety of data and multimedia services, the revenue generating process can also be maximized. The economic and regulation trends also have to be synchronized for the proper and step by step replacement of traditional network by NGN. The current flow is to provide users with multitude of services thus meeting their high demands and enhancing revenues for network operators. Class 5 and Class 4 are our legacy circuit switches based upon TDM to transport voice. For handling control functions, call setup and teardown SS7 signaling was used. The traditional network was designed to support voice services only not being able to meet customers’ demands who require a variety of services at an optimum cost. The aim of this work is to present the role of NGN encompassing the telecom network, architecture and technologies. Also it has emerged as a new platform to decrease the CAPEX and OPEX of overall network infrastructure and to maximize their revenues. In this paper, we present an upcoming architecture for the transition to NGN which is future proof for going through the migration phase along with the capacity and planning of our network.
