The Makhonjwa Mountains, traditionally referred to as the Barberton Greenstone Belt, retain an iconic Paleoarchean archive against which numerical models of early earth geodynamics can be tested. We present new geologic and structural maps, geochemical plots, geo- and thermo-chronology, and geophysical data from seven silicic, mafic to ultramafic complexes separated by major shear systems across the southern Makhonjwa Mountains. All reveal signs of modern oceanic back-arc crust and subductionrelated processes. We compare the rates of processes determined from this data and balance these against plate tectonic and plume related models. Robust rates of both horizontal and vertical tectonic processes derived from the Makhonjwa Mountain complexes are similar, well within an order of magnitude, to those encountered across modern oceanic and orogenic terrains flanking Western Pacific-like subduction zones. We conclude that plate tectonics and linked plate-boundary processes were well established by 3.2-3.6 Ga. Our work provides new constraints for modellers with rates of a 'basket' of processes against which to test Paleoarchean geodynamic models over a time period close to the length of the Phanerozoic.

Sensitivity of miRNA-181a,miRNA-23b and miRNA-16 in the Late-Onset Neonatal Sepsis:A Diagnostic Study

Objective To evaluate the expression and diagnostic value of levels of the microRNAs(miRNAs),miRNA-181a,miRNA-23b,and miRNA-16,in late-onset neonatal sepsis(LOS)and compare them with the diagnostic utility of C-reactive protein(CRP)*** This was a prospective diagnostic study conducted between January 2021 and March 2023 at a tertiary care center(Sri Ramachandra Hospital)in *** real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to determine miRNA-181a,miRNA-23b,and miRNA-16 expression levels,and CRP was measured by *** diagnostic value of miRNA and CRP levels were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic(ROC)*** curves were utilized to determine optimal cutoff points,and Mann–Whitney tests were performed using SPSS to ascertain P values,with statistical significance defined as<*** This study included 100 samples,with 50 cases of culture-proven LOS(27 females,23 males)and 50 healthy controls(31 females,19 males).In LOS,miRNA-181a and miRNA-23b expression levels were significantly downregulated(P<0.001),with area under the curve(AUC)values of 0.83 and 0.92,respectively,whereas those of miRNA-16 were significantly upregulated(P<0.001;AUC=0.97).In comparison,CRP levels had an AUC value of 0.831(P<0.001).Further,miRNA-23b showed the highest sensitivity(98%)of markers tested,whereas miRNA-16 exhibited the highest specificity(96%).Conclusion MiRNA,especially miRNA-16,shows diagnostic potential for neonatal sepsis compared with traditional biomarkers like CRP and procalcitonin,suggesting its use as an early marker for ***,further cohort studies are needed before practical application.

Field evidences showing rapid frontal degeneration of the Kangriz glacier,western Himalayas,Jammu&Kashmir

Life cycle of glaciers in the Himalayan region has notably changed due to the climatic variability since last few decades. Glaciers across the world and specially the Himalayan glaciers have shown large scale degeneration in the last few decades. Himalayan glaciers serve as an important fresh water resource for the downstream communities, who are dependent on this water for domestic and other purposes. Therefore, glacier shrinkage and the associated hydrological changes pose a significant problem for regional-scale water budgets and resource management. These issues necessitate the regular and rigorous monitoring of the wastage pattern of the Himalayan glaciers in field and using satellite remote sensing data. In this work, we report rapid and enhanced degeneration of the frontal part of the Kangriz glacier, Jammu and Kashmir(J & K), in terms of surface melting, debris cover, snout characteristics and meltwater discharge. Ablation data acquired during 2016-2017 shows the average lowering of the frontal part of the glacier to be ~148 ± 34 cm, one-third of which was found to have occurred within a 13 day time period in September, 2017. Also, the quantum of ice melt was found to be inversely influenced(r =-0.84) by the debris thickness. 15 day meltwater discharge measurement revealed its strong relationship with snout disintegration pattern, evidenced twice during the said time period. Volume of water discharged from the glacier was estimated to be 7.91×10~6 m^3 for the measurement duration. Also, mean daily discharge estimated for the 15 days interval showed good positive correction(r = 0.78) with temperature indicating the direct dependency of the former on land surface temperature conditions of the region. Besides the lowering and discharge observations, the frequent ice-block break-offs at the glacier snout further enhance its overall drastic degeneration. Spectrum of fungal keratitis: clinicopathologic study of 44 cases

AIM: To determine the causative agents of fungal keratitis and study the predisposing factors over a period of ten years in a single tertiary care hospital. ·METHODS: A retrospective analysis of fungal corneal ulcers was done from 2003-2012. Patients’ clinical data were noted from the file records. Correlation of histopathological diagnosis was done with the report on fungal culture. · RESULTS: Mycotic keratitis was established in 44 cases by a positive fungal culture. Direct microscopic examination of potassium hydroxide(KOH) mounts revealed fungal elements in 39 cases while 40 cases showed fungus on Gram stained smears. Males(54.55%) were more commonly affected than the females(45.45%). The age ranged from 18 to 82 years. Most common age group to be involved was 41-60 years. Predisposing risk factors were seen in 34(77.27%) cases. Most common findings on clinical examination were anterior chamber reaction and conjunctival injection seen in all the cases. Other common findings were stromal infiltration and hypopyon seen in 20(45.45%) and 18(40.91%) cases respectively. On histopathological examination the fungus was typed,as aspergillus in 34 cases while no definite typing was possible in 10 cases. The predominant isolate was aspergillus flavus(59.09%) followed by fusarium(15.91%). Mixed fungal and bacterial infection was seen in 3(6.82%) cases. ·CONCLUSION: Although culture is the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of fungal keratitis,direct microscopic examination of corneal scrapings or histomorphological evaluation of biopsies allow a rapidpreliminary diagnosis. Early administration of antifungal treatment helps in preventing dreadful complications.

Polymeric amines are being studied intensively as components of systems for gene delivery in genetic engineering and gene therapy of genetic disorders, including cancer. Despite remarkable achievements in the field, polymeric amines, such as polyethyleneimine, show some disadvantages. Strong interaction between the amine-containing polymer and nucleic acid hampers the release of nucleic acid in the cell cytoplasm. Amine groups can interact with the cell membrane which results in cell death. These limitations of polymeric amines stimulated an investigation of new structures for gene delivery. Imidazole-containing polymers have attracted attention as lesser basic substances, while they are able to interact with polymeric acids. Further development of imidazole-based gene delivery agents requires knowledge about some fundamental aspects of interaction between nucleic acids, and polymeric imidazoles. In this work, we studied the complexation of poly(1-vinylimidazole) and oligomeric DNA. We found that the number of active sites capable of binding with negatively charged phosphate groups is comparable with the number of protonated imidazole units in the case of high molecular weight polymer. The increase in polymer charge by 1-bromopropane quaternizating 1%?5% imidazole units or by decreasing the pH to 6.5?7 considerably increased the ability of poly(1-vinylimidazole) to interact with oligonucleotides. The pH sensitivity of this interaction is interesting for cancer gene therapy because the tumours have a lowered intercellular pH (stable oligonucleotide complex) and a higher extracellular pH which can lead to complex dissociation. Minimal critical length for complexation of quaternized poly(1-vinylimidazole) and DNA is below eight units which corresponds to polymers with amine groups. Bioinspired Water-soluble Polymers with Grafted Polyamine Chains： Synthesis and Complexation with Oligonucleotides

The siliceous frustules of diatom algae contain complex proteins known as silaffins, which consist of a peptide chain with grafted polyamine chains. These polyamines contain twenty or more nitrogen atoms with trimethylene groups between the nitrogens. We synthesized a set of polymers containing grafted long-chain polyamine fragments by using acryloyl chloride （ACh） polymers and activated acrylic acid copolymers as the starting materials. The new polymers contained 0.05 mol%-3.2 mol% of polyamine chains, which corresponded to 0.06-3.56 mmol·g- 1 amine groups. The new amine-containing polymers formed complexes with short （19-21-mer） deoxyribonucleic acid （DNA） and ribonucleic acid （RNA） strands, and these complexes penetrated into model yeast cells and A549 lung cancer cell. This study demonstrates the potential of these species based on long-chain polyamines to serve as novel gene delivery systems.
