Elucidation of thermally induced internal porosity in zinc oxide nanorods

In situ electron microscopy, tomography, photoluminescence, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy were utilized to monitor and explain the formation and growth of internal pores within ZnO nanorods. Careful examination using electron microscopy and tomography indicate that nanosized intemal pores start appearing within the individual solution-grown ZnO nanorods upon exposure to 200 ℃. The pore volume growth rate is proportional to the heat treatment time, indicating that the process is diffusion controlled, akin to a reverse Ostwald ripening-like process. A manageable pore growth rate of 1.4-4.4 nm^3·min^-1 was observed at 540 ℃, suggesting that the effective control over internal porosity can be achieved by carefully controlling the heat-treatment profile. Mechanistic studies using X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated that the pore formation is linked to the significant reduction of the number of zinc vacancies after heat treatment. An optimum condition exists where most of the native surface defects are removed, while the bulk defects are contained within the internal pores. It is also demonstrated that the internal porosity can be exploited to improve the visible light absorption of ZnO. A combination of the lower defect density and improved light absorption of the heat-treated ZnO films thus lead to an increase in the photo- electrochemical response of more than 20× compared to that of the as-grown ZnO.

Visceral leishmaniasis or kala-azar is a potent parasitic infection causing death of thousands of people each year. Medicinal compounds currently available for the treatment of kala-azar have serious side effects and decreased efficacy owing to the emergence of resistant strains. The type of immune reaction is also to be considered in patients infected with Leishmania donovani （L. donovani）. For complete eradication of this disease, a high level modern research is currently being applied both at the molecular level as well as at the field level. The computational approaches like remote sensing, geographic information system （GIS） and bioinformatics are the key resources for the detection and distribution of vectors, patterns, ecological and environmental factors and genomic and proteomic analysis. Novel approaches like GIS and bioinformatics have been more appropriately utilized in determining the cause of visearal leishmaniasis and in designing strategies for preventing the disease from spreading from one region to another.

Anti-inflammatory activity of the leaf extacts of Gendarussa vulgaris Nees

Objective:To evaluate the anti-inflammatory property of the leaf exacts of Gendarussa vulgaris(***) ***:*** Nees of the family Apocynaceae is a medium sized tree grown in semishade or no shade and is common in the Ernad and Nilambur taluks of Kerala. Various parts of this plant have been used in the treatment of ulcers,sores,inflammation, dyspepsia,healing of wounds,*** present study aimed at the evaluation of anti-inflammatory property of the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the leaves by both in vitro and in vivo methods. In vitro method was estimated by human red blood cell membrane stabilisation(HRBC) method and in vivo method was estimated on the carrageenan induced paw ***:Both the methods showed significant anti-inflammatory property of the different extracts tested. Conclusions:The alcoholic extract at a concentration of 300 mg/mL showed potent activity on comparing with the standard drug diclofenac sodium.

Simulation and Implementation of Solar Powered Electric Vehicle

The rise in the price of oil and pollution issues has increased the interest on the development of electric vehicles. This paper discusses about the application of solar energy to power up the vehicle. The basic principle of solar based electric vehicle is to use energy that is stored in a battery to drive the motor and it moves the vehicle in forward or reverse direction. The Photo Voltaic (PV) module may be connected either in parallel or series, and the charge controllers direct this solar power to the batteries. The DC voltage from the PV panel is then boosted up using a boost DC-DC converter, and then an inverter, where DC power is converted to AC power, ultimately runs the Brushless DC motor which is used as the drive motor for the vehicle application. This paper focuses on the design, simulation and implementation of the various components, namely: solar panel, charge controller, battery, DC-DC boost converter, DC-AC power converter (inverter circuit) and BLDC motor for the vehicle application. All these components are modeled in MATLAB/SIMULINK and in real-time, the hardware integration of the system is developed and tested to verify the simulation results.

Simultaneous Optimization of Correlated Multiple Surface Quality Characteristics of Mild Steel Turned Product

Present work highlights application of utility theory combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Taguchi’s robust design for simultaneous optimization of correlated multiple surface quality characteristics of mild steel machined product prepared by straight turning operation. The study aims at evaluating the most favorable process environment followed by an optimal parametric combination for achieving high surface quality. Traditional Taguchi based hybrid optimization approaches rely on the assumption that quality indices are uncorrelated or independent. But it is felt that, in practice, there may be some correlation among various quality indices (responses) under consideration. To overcome this limitation of Taguchi approach, the present study proposes application of PCA to convert correlated responses into uncorrelated quality indices called principal components. Finally based on utility theory, Taguchi method has been applied to solve this optimization problem. The study demonstrates detailed methodology and concludes robustness and flexibility of the proposed optimization technique and validates its effectiveness through a case study in which correlated multiple response characteristics of turning operation have been optimized.

A Novel Approach for Iron Deficiency Anaemia with Liposomal Iron: Concept to Clinic

Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common nutritional deficiency disorder, contributing to 50 percent of all the anaemias in the world. Dietary changes alone are insufficient for the correction and management of iron deficiency anaemia. Hence, iron supplementation is necessary. Conventional oral iron therapy is limited in many patients because of dose dependent side effects, insufficient absorption, lack of compliance and limitation in various inflammatory conditions. Liposomal iron is a technologically designed, innovative form of iron which due to its differential delivery system ensures higher absorption and bioavailability, greater tolerability and least gastro-intestinal side effects unlike conventional oral iron preparations. This review provides a critical discussion and a comprehensive view based on the author’s review of the medical literature concerning the technology of liposomal iron preparation, mechanism of its absorption, its advantage over conventional iron preparations and clinical evidence on its usage in iron deficient states in pregnancy and certain inflammatory conditions.

Assessment of Above-and Below-Ground Carbon Pools in a Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest Ecosystem of Bhopal, India

This study estimated 18.35 Mg C/ha in standing biomass of natural forest and 15 Mg C/ha in Hardwickia binata Roxb. plantation in a tropical dry deciduous forest located in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. The study area of Indian Institute of Forest Management(IIFM), Bhopal,resembled a degraded dry scrubland in 1988 and for over about three decades, the degraded forest recovered remarkably, and ecological processes evolved favorably with canopy cover reaching over 60% in some patches and about 50% in general at most part of the campus. The study was conducted in 18 randomly laid plots in natural forest and over one-acre(0.405-ha) plantation area of Hardwickia binata for assessing the above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass and subsequent carbon content. The lower-diameter classes accounted for the maximum above-ground biomass, basal area and tree density. The forest is predominantly occupied by Leucaena leucocephala, an exotic tree species which showed higher standing biomass carbon storage of 3.79 Mg C/ha followed by Holoptelea integrifolia(2.11 Mg C/ha), Azadirachta indica(1.29 Mg C/ha),Gardenia latifolia(1.26 Mg C/ha) and Lannea coromandelica(1.24 Mg C/ha) besides Hardwickia binata plantation(15 Mg C/ha). It is recommended to plant and promote local native tree species in the urban forests of tropical dry deciduous nature as a means to mitigate climate change effects.

Teneligliptin: Heralding Change in Type 2 Diabetes

“Sweet is Sweet but until it is not too Sweet”. As the sweet spoon of diabetes challenges the global population, diabetic organizations across the globe call for unanimous resonance of Diabetes Voice to tackle diabetes with healthy living. With the discovery of new pathophysiology associated with diabetes, patients are gaining access to the newer therapeutic classes. Teneligliptin, a third generation DPP-4 inhibitor exhibits unique “J-shaped” structure with “anchor-lock domain” mechanism which provides potent & long duration of action. It acts like an insulin/glucagon modulator controlling blood glucose over 24 hours. It is effective in tackling short-term glycemic fluctuations and improvement in β-cell parameters is observed soon after treatment. Half-life of 26.9 hours ensures once a day administration. Because the metabolites of this drug are eliminated via renal and hepatic excretion, no dose adjustment is necessary in patients with renal impairment. Improvement in lipid profile, LV function, adiponectin levels & natriuretic effect is among the added pleiotropic benefits. With the effective glycemic control & capability for improvement in β-cell function, Teneligliptin promises to be a preferable antidiabetic agent with long-term efficacy & safety in patients with type 2 diabetes. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive datum analysis of Teneligliptin in the management of type 2 diabetes. It summarizes the unique pharmacodynamic & pharmacokinetic advantages of Teneligliptin and additionally its pleiotropic benefits of cardioprotection. It provides a comprehensive comparison of Teneligliptin vis-à-vis other gliptins in the class & provides a concise summary of all clinical trials till the date with Teneligliptin monotherapy & combination with other antidiabetic drugs.
