Nutrient optimization for plant growth in Aquaponic irrigation using Machine Learning for small training datasets

With the recent trends in urban agriculture and climate change,there is an emerging need for alternative plant culture techniques where dependence on soil can be eliminated.Hydroponic and aquaponic growth techniques have proven to be viable alternatives,but the lack of efficient and optimal practices for irrigation and nutrient supply limits its applications on a large-scale commercial basis.The main purpose of this research was to develop statistical methods and Machine Learning algorithms to regulate nutrient concentrations in aquaponic irrigation water based on plant needs,for achieving optimal plant growth and promoting broader adoption of aquaponic culture on a commercial scale.One of the key challenges to developing these algorithms is the sparsity of data which requires the use of Bolstered error estimation approaches.In this paper,several linear and non-linear algorithms trained on relatively small datasets using Bolstered error estimation techniques were evaluated,for selecting the best method in making decisions regarding the regulation of nutrients in hydroponic environments.After repeated tests on the dataset,it was decided that Semi-Bolstered Resubstitution Error estimation technique works best in our case using Linear Support Vector Machine as the classifier with the value of penalty parameter set to one.A set of recommended rules have been prescribed as a Decision Support System,using the output of the Machine Learning algorithm,which have been tested against the results of the baseline model.Further,the positive impact of the recommended nutrient concentrationson plant growth in aquaponic environments has been elaborately discussed.

The feral or volunteer cotton(VC)plants when reach the pinhead squaring phase(5–6 leaf stage)can act as hosts for the boll weevil(Anthonomus grandis L.)pests.The Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Program(TBWEP)employs people to locate and eliminate VC plants growing by the side of roads or fields with rotation crops but the ones growing in the middle of fields remain undetected.In this paper,we demonstrate the application of computer vision(CV)algorithm based on You Only Look Once version 5(YOLOv5)for detecting VC plants growing in the middle of corn fields at three different growth stages(V3,V6 and VT)using unmanned aircraft systems(UAS)remote sensing imagery.All the four variants of YOLOv5(s,m,l,and x)were used and their performances were compared based on classification accuracy,mean average precision(mAP)and F1-score.It was found that YOLOv5s could detect VC plants with maximum classification accuracy of 98%and mAP of 96.3%at V6 stage of corn while YOLOv5s and YOLOv5m resulted in the lowest classification accuracy of 85%and YOLOv5m and YOLOv5l had the least mAP of 86.5%at VT stage on images of size 416×416 pixels.The developed CV algorithm has the potential to effectively detect and locate VC plants growing in the middle of corn fields as well as expedite the management aspects of TBWEP.

Background RNA-Seq is the recently developed high-throughput sequencing technology for profiling the entire transcriptome in any organism.It has several major advantages over current hybridizationbased approach such as microarrays.However,the cost per sample by RNA-Seq is still prohibitive for most laboratories.With continued improvement in sequence output,it would be cost-effective if multiple samples are multiplexed and sequenced in a single lane with sufficient transcriptome coverage.The objective of this analysis is to evaluate what coverage might be sufficient to interrogate gene expression profiling in the chicken by RNA-Seq.Results Two cDNA libraries from chicken lungs were sequenced early,and 4.9 million(M) and 1.6 M(60 bp) reads were generated,respectively.With significant improvements in sequencing technology, two technical replicate cDNA libraries were re-sequenced.Totals of 29.6 M and 28.7 M(75 bp) reads were obtained with the two samples.More than 90%of annotated genes were detected in the data sets with 28.7-29.6 M reads,while only 68%of genes were detected in the data set with 1.6 M reads.The correlation coefficients of gene expression between technical replicates within the same sample were 0.9458 and 0.8442.To evaluate the appropriate depth needed for mRNA profiling,a random sampling method was used to generate different number of reads from each sample.There was a significant increase in correlation coefficients from a sequencing depth of 1.6 M to 10 M for all genes except highly abundant genes.No significant improvement was observed from the depth of 10 M to 20 M(75 bp) reads.Conclusion The analysis from the current study demonstrated that 30 M (75 bp) reads is sufficient to detect all annotated genes in chicken lungs.Ten million(75 bp) reads could detect about 80%of annotated chicken genes,and RNA-Seq at this depth can serve as a replacement of microarray technology.Furthermore,the depth of sequencing had a significant impact on measuring gene expression of low abundant genes.Finally,the combi

Recent changes occurred in terminus of the debris-covered Bilafond Glacier in the Karakoram Range in the Himalayas, Northern Pakistan was investigated in this research. Landsat MSS, TM and ETM+ images were used for this study. Digital elevation models derived from ASTER GDEM and SRTM were also utilized. Visible, infrared and thermal infrared channels were utilized in order to get accurate glacier change maps. Three methods were tried to map this debris-covered glacier in this research. The glacier has been mapped successfully and the changes in the glacier terminus from 1978 to 2011 have been calculated. Manual, semi-automatic and thermal methods were found to give similar results. It was found that the glacier has undergone serious ablation during this period despite of the fact that many of the larger glaciers in the Hindu Kush and Karakoram mountain regions in the Upper Indus Basin were reported to be expanding. The terminus has been moved back about 600 meters during this period and there was an abrupt change in the glacier terminus during 1990-2002. We propose that debris thickness is not the only factor that influences the glacier ablation but the altitude of the debris-covered glacier as well. Many glaciers in the Karakoram region reported to be expanding were having higher altitudes compared to the study area.

The focus of this study was to investigate the wide use of Eucalyptus spp.,an exotic plant with high allelopathic ability,in the reforestation programs of urban parks in São Paulo City,Brazil,over the last century.To understand the implications of using Eucalyptus spp.in the city’s parks,this study aimed to compare nutrient cycling and litter decomposition between a mixed composition of litter(i.e.,native and exotic species)and the litter of a single species(i.e.,Eucalyptus).To accomplish this,newly deciduous leaves were collected from two native and two exotic species that are commonly used in the afforestation of São Paulo as well as from Eucalyptus spp.The mixed composition of litter yielded a higher dry mass loss and return of macro-and micronutrients to the forest floor.The decomposition constant(k)values were 0.00322 and 0.00207 g g^(−1) day^(−1) for the mixed composition and Eucalyptus spp.,respectively.The time required for decomposition of 50 and 95%of deciduous material was 215 and 931 days,respectively,and for the mixed litterfall 334 and 1449 days,respectively,for Eucalyptus spp.Therefore,the mixed litter exhibited greater dry mass loss and nutrient cycling in an urban forest of São Paulo City,since dry mass losses as well as speed and amount of nutrients returned to the forest floor were relatively higher compared to Eucalyptus spp.Nutrient cycling via Eucalyptus spp.litter was less efficient than mixed composition of litter,demonstrating that reforestation programs carried out in the twentieth century using only one species may have had little success.The results of this work emphasize the fact that in urban reforestation programs the City of São Paulo must consider the environmental and biogeographic characteristics of the species employed and use high levels of biodiversity,since the city lies in a megadiverse biome.

For fish farming,water is the limiting factor for good productivity.Limnological characteristics determine the health and the productivity of the fish and can indicate possible problems arising in the ecosystem.The present study aimed to verify the nictemeral and vertical dynamics of limnological characteristics in a tilapia farming tank coated with geomembrane and with low water renewal.Collections were carried out in a 24 hour on period of 18 days with an interval of three hours between the water collections.In order to determine the vertical dynamics,water samples were taken at three depths(5,35,and 70 cm)in the central region of the tank.It was found that the parameters analyzed showed changes in the period.Dissolved oxygen and pH changed sharply in the 24-hour period(p$<0.05$),with values of 3.86 mg L$^{-1}$at 6:00 AM and 18.39 mg L$^{-1}$at 3:00 PM;and 8.0 at 06:00 AM and 9.65 mg L$^{-1}$at 6:00 PM,respectively.With respect to the three layers of the tank,the difference between the values of dissolved oxygen in the epilimnion and the metalimnion(above 14 mg L$^{-1}$)is clear,while in the hypolimnion the concentration of this oxygen was 7.57 mg L$^{-1}$(p$<0.05$).Nitrite and phosphorus had similar behavior,with more pronounced values in hypolimnion.There is a strong correlation between temperature and depth of the tank($r=-0.85,~p=5.86\times 10^{-9}$),depth and dissolved oxygen($r=-0.77,p=9.97\times 10^{-6}$),temperature and ammonia($r=-0.82,~p=6.33\times 10^{-8}$),depth and ammonia($r=0.79,~p=4.79\times 10^{-7}$),and nitrite and dissolved oxygen($r=-0.72,~p=2.15\times 10^{-4}$).The principal component analysis showed that there was a separation between the strata epilimnion,metalimnion,and hypolimnion.The response surface analysis showed the interaction between depth,temperature and the variables dissolved oxygen,ammonia,and phosphorus.The result of this study helps to illustrate the dynamics of a tilapia tank covered with geomembrane and low water renewal over a period of 24 hours at different layers of th

Magnetism of Cr Impurities Embedded in Cu fcc Matrix： Density Functional Calculations

We present extensive first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations dedicated to analyze the magnetic properties of Crn (n = 2 and 3) impurities embedded in a Cu fcc matrix. We consider several dimers and trimers having different interatomic distances. In all cases the Cr atoms have been embedded as substitutional impurities in the metallic network. For the case of the dimers we have considered two magnetic configurations: Ferromagnetic (Antiferromagnetic) when the atomic magnetic moments are parallel (antiparallel) each other, for this case we have found that the lowest-energy state corresponds to the antiferromagnetic coupling between Cr atoms whose interatomic distance is a√2. In the case of the Cr trimers we have considered three or four magnetic configurations, depending on the Cr impurity geometry, for this case we have found that the lowest-energy state corresponds to the antiferromagnetic Cr trimer AF (↑,↓,↓) forming an isosceles right angle triangle whose hypotenuse and legs length are a√2 and a, respectively, with magnetic moments c (2) = 3.45/-3.32/3.45 μB.

Production of Filler Aggregate from Waste of Bivalves Molluscs Shells

The work presents an experimental study held with shells of molluscs of the species Anomalocardia brasiliana and Tivela mactroides, commonly found in the Northeast coast of Brazil. A local community living from the collection of these animals was the motivation of the work. This community wishes to install an industry for processing these molluscs; however, as government agencies require making an appropriate allocation of discarded shells, the community needs an environmental project of final destination of waste. Thus, the expectation of the work was to obtain a material to be added to Portland cement to act as filler, and also obtain a limestone that can be used as ink, because the material is composed of 80% calcium carbonate. The shells were ground and passed the sieve 325 mesh (0.044 mm). The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. Mortars specimens were prepared with percentages: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% replacement of Portland cement. Two conditions were analyzed: with shells in a raw and burned state. The obtained results confirm the filler material effect, which suggests its use as a partial replacement of cement. However, due to the short silicas’s concentration, the pozzolanic effect was not observed.

Partial Nephrectomy as Treatment of an Atypical Metastasis from Prostate Cancer—A Case Report and Review of Literature

Background: Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in man and the second in cancer-specific deaths in this population in the world. Most of the causes of death related to prostate cancer are due to its distant metastases, with the most common sites being: skeleton, distant lymph nodes, liver and lung. Renal metastasis is rare, and studies suggest infiltration due to arterial microembolization of the tumor. A key point in this scenario is the clinical suspicion of differential diagnoses, to offer the patient an effective therapy in such a specific case. Aim: To report a case of a patient with prostate cancer undergoing partial nephrectomy whose histopathological report revealed a metastatic lesion of that primary site. Case Presentation: 74 years old man, referred in May 2015 due to high PSA level and lumbago. PSA 323.11 ng/dl, rectal examination cT3a;biopsy was performed and histopathological study reported bilateral prostate adenocarcinoma, Gleason’s score 8 (4 + 4). Patient’s staging showed multiple secondary implants on skeletal scintigraphy. Tomography revealed solid exophytic lesion in the lower pole of the right kidney (4.7 × 3.6 cm);prostate without cleavage planes with seminal vesicles and pelvic node enlargement. Hormone therapy was initiated, PSA levels dropped to 9.51 ng/dl and total testosterone Conclusion: Given the rarity of these cases, it is not possible to presume that nephrectomy enhances the survival rates. However, we observed that partial nephrectomy was a good choice for our patient, being the first case described in the literature. More reports should be available and studies with higher levels of evidence should be conducted to assist us in patient orientation and decision making.
