Anti-inflammatory efficiency of levobupivacaine in an experimental colitis model

AIM:To investigate the efficiency of levobupivacaine in treating experimentally induced colitis in ***:Colitis was induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid and ethanol in 30 rats under general anesthesia,and 10 rats were used as a sham *** to induction of colitis,rats were divided into three groups;budesonide group received 0.1 mg/kg budesonide,levobupivacaine group received 10 mg/kg levobupivacaine and saline group received 1 mL saline solution via rectal route for 7 *** the sham group,only routine rectal catheterization was performed without use of any *** the end of 7 d,laparotomy and total colectomy were performed for histopathological ex-amination in all rats and blood samples were drawn for measurement of tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αand interleukin(IL)-6 following cardiac *** and microscopic evaluations of the specimens were performed by a pathologist blinded to group assignment of the ***:Weight loss(P=0.016)and macroscopic examination scores(P=0.001)were significantly higher in saline group than *** scoring was comparable between all colitis groups(P=0.350).There was no significant difference in TNF-αlevels and IL-6 levels(P=0.150).CONCLUSION:The significant improvement in macroscopic scores suggests that levobupivacaine may have topical anti-inflammatory effects in an experimental colitis model;however,this finding was not supported by microscopic findings.

Trace Elements in the Soil-Plant Systems of Copper Mine Areas-A Case Study From Murgul Copper Mine From the Black Sea Region of Turkey

This study presents a case study on the heavy metal analysis of soil and plant samples around the Murgul copper mine,one of the first and most important mining areas in *** attempt has been made to investigate the status of trace elements like Al^(3+),Fe^(2+),Cu^(2+),Zn^(2+),Pb^(2+),Ni^(2+),Co^(2+)and Cd^(2+)in soils and *** sampling localities were taken from 500 m,600 m,and 1000 m altitudes around the factory and at 1400 m in the forest *** aboveground parts and foliage ash of Silene compacta,Tussilago farfara,Smilax excelsa,Rhododendron ponticum,***,and herbal mix were *** results of analysis have revealed the minimum and maximum concentrations measured in the plants as follows;aluminium(20-8985 mg kg^(-1)),cadmium(0.0-0.5 mg kg^(-1)),cobalt(0.0-5.5 mg kg^(-1)),copper(0.0-347.5 mg kg^(-1)),iron(25-9320 mg kg^(-1)),lead(2-51 mg kg^(-1)),nickel(1.5-16.5 mg kg^(-1)),and zinc(13.0-221.0 mg kg^(-1)).In the soil the concentrations of aluminium,cadmium,cobalt,copper,iron,lead,nickel,and zinc vary between 33-457,0.0-0.0,0.0-0.4,0.1-88.7,14-50,0.3-4.1,0.2-0.8,and 4.0-20.3 mg kg^(-1) *** findings enlighten the fact that copper is generally toxic in the soils as well as *** compacta has been recorded as a high copper accumulator,behaving as a healthy plant on the polluted sites of the area alongside the Murgul creek(especially at 600 m).This study stresses the fact that it is imperative to assess and monitor the levels of heavy metals in the environment due to anthropogenic activities,including mining,for evaluation of human exposure and for sustainable environment.

Effect of Putrescine on Low-Temperature Acclimation in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Putrescine is reported to be necessary for cold acclimation under low-temperature *** this study,the effect of low-temperature on some physiological and biochemical parameters has been investigated using the green algae Chlamydomonas *** lipid peroxidation rate,amount of Rubisco protein,activities of antioxidant enzymes and gene expression of polyamine biosynthesis(odc2,and spd1),heat shock proteins(hsp70c,hsp90a,and hsp90c),and PSII repair mechanisms(psba,rep27,and tba1)were determined to understand the low-temperature *** putrescine application significantly increased Rubisco protein concentration and catalase enzyme activities under low-temperature ***,real-time RT-PCR results and gene expression analysis showed that polyamine metabolism induced gene expression at low-temperatures in the first 24 *** the same way,the gene expression of heat shock proteins(hsp70c,hsp90a,and hsp90c)decreased under low-temperature treatment for 72 h;however,application of putrescine enhanced the gene expression in the first 24 *** results obtained indicated that molecular response in the first 24 h could be important for cold *** psba and tba1 expressions were reduced under low-temperatures depending on the exposure *** contrast,the exogenous putrescine enhanced the expression level of the psba response to low-temperature at 24 and 72 *** results obtained in this study indicate that putrescine could play a role in the PS II repair mechanisms under low-temperature stress.

Nonlinear Optical Rectification, Second and Third Harmonic Generations in Square-Step and Graded-Step Quantum Wells under Intense Laser Field

For square-step quantum wells(SSQWs) and graded-step quantum wells(GSQWs), the nonlinear optical rectification(NOR), second harmonic generation(SHG) and third harmonic generation(THG) coefficients under an intense laser field(ILF) are analyzed. The found results indicate that ILF can ensure a vital influence on the shape and height of the confined potential profile of both SSQWs and GSQWs, and alterations of the dipole moment matrix elements and the energy levels are adhered on the profile of the confined potential. According to the results, the potential profile and height of the GSQWs are affected more significantly by ILF intensity compared to SSQWs. These results indicate that NOR, SHG and THG coefficients of SSQWs and GSQWs may be calibrated in a preferred energy range and the magnitude of the resonance peak(RP) by tuning the ILF parameter. It is feasible to classify blue or red shifts in RP locations of NOR, SHG and THG coefficients by varying the ILF parameter. Our results can be useful in investigating new ways of manipulating the opto-electronic properties of semiconductor QW devices.

Intracolonic multiple pebbles in young adults:Radiographic imaging and conventional approach to a case

Most of the foreign bodies detected in adult gastroin- testinal systems are accidentally swallowed pins. In this study, we presented a case with intracolonic multiple pebbles. A 20-year-old man was admitted to emergency surgery policlinic for abdominal pain for 2 d without any alleviation or aggravation. His upright plain abdominal radiographic imaging revealed about 30-40 overt dense opacities in lumen of colonic segments, with oval and well shaped contours, each approximately 1 cm × 1 cm in size. The multiplanar reconstructions and three- dimensional images combined with sectional screening showed that all pebbles had passed completely into the colon and no foreign bodies had remained in the ileal segments. On psychiatric assessment, he was found to have immature personality features, difficulty in over- coming stressors and adaptation disorder. He recovered by conservative management and radiographic monitoring applied during his follow-up. Thus, it can be concluded that, in differential diagnosis of abdominal pain in adult ages, though less frequently seen than in children, gastrointestinal system foreign bodies should always be kept in mind and it should be considered that ingestion of pebbles may be one of the factors contributing to abdominal pain particularly in young adults with psychiatric problems. In such cases suspected of having foreign bodies which cannot be detected by plain films, abdominal tomography can be an alternative for diagnostic imaging.

Kd-tree and quad-tree decompositions for declustering of 2D range queries over uncertain space

We present a study to show the possibility of using two well-known space partitioning and indexing techniques, kd trees and quad trees, in declustering applications to increase input/output （I/O） paraUelization and reduce spatial data processing times. This parallelization enables time-consuming computational geometry algorithms to be applied efficiently to big spatial data rendering and querying. The key challenge is how to balance the spatial processing load across a large number of worker nodes, given significant performance heterogeneity in nodes and processing skews in the workload.

Peripapillary and macular vascular densities in healthy,ocular hypertensive,and different stages of glaucomatous eyes

AIM:To investigate vascular changes in different stages of glaucoma and to evaluate the role of optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)in the early diagnosis of ***:Glaucoma patients and healthy controls(n=29 eyes)were investigated in this cross-sectional comparative *** patients were grouped as ocular hypertension(n=44 eyes),preperimetric glaucoma(PPG;n=32 eyes),early glaucoma(EG;n=35 eyes),moderate stage glaucoma(MG;n=36 eyes),and advanced glaucoma(AG;n=35 eyes).Peripapillary and macular vascular densities(VDs)of all participants were compared and correlations of VDs and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness(RNFLT),ganglion cell analysis(GCA),and visual field(VF)tests were *** under the receiver operation characteristic curves(AUC)of the peripapillary and macular VD parameters were ***:VD values decreased with the progression of *** peripapillary and macular VD parameters of PPG and EG groups were lower than healthy controls(P<0.001).There was no significant difference in RNFLT between the PPG and EG groups,but most peripapillary and macular VDs were found to be lower in EG group than in PPG group(P<0.05).In most disease group,VDs were significantly correlated with OCT parameters(P<0.001)and VF index(P<0.05).There were no significant correlations between VF and RNFLT indices in the AG group,but significant correlations were found between VF and VD values(P<0.05).AUC for discriminating between healthy and glaucomatous eyes were highest in whole image peripapillary VD(AUC:0.865,0.929,and 0.986,respectively in EG,MG,and AG groups).CONCLUSION:OCTA can be used in the early diagnosis of glaucoma and can be useful in follow-up of the advanced *** cases where limitations or suspicions in structural and functional tests are present,OCTA can be used as a supportive diagnostic test,both in EG and AG.

Genome engineering and disease modeling via programmable nucleases for insulin gene therapy;promises of CRISPR/Cas9 technology

Targeted genome editing is a continually evolving technology employing programmable nucleases to specifically change,insert,or remove a genomic sequence of *** advanced molecular tools include meganucleases,zinc finger nucleases,transcription activator-like effector nucleases and RNA-guided engineered nucleases(RGENs),which create double-strand breaks at specific target sites in the genome,and repair DNA either by homologous recombination in the presence of donor DNA or via the error-prone non-homologous end-joining mechanism.A recently discovered group of RGENs known as CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing systems allowed precise genome manipulation revealing a causal association between disease genotype and phenotype,without the need for the reengineering of the specific enzyme when targeting different ***/Cas9 has been successfully employed as an ex vivo gene-editing tool in embryonic stem cells and patient-derived stem cells to understand pancreatic beta-cell development and ***-guided nucleases also open the way for the generation of novel animal models for diabetes and allow testing the efficiency of various therapeutic approaches in diabetes,as summarized and exemplified in this manuscript.

A geriatric patient with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis

The most frequent health problems seen in senility are chronic and degenerative diseases. A 75-year-old male patient with the complaints of weight loss and difficulty in swallowing was admitted to our hospital from a nursing home. Upper system fiber-optic gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed and a mass at the junction of the hypopharynx and esophagus just below recessus piriformis obstructing almost the whole of the lumen and blocking the distal passage was detected. Computed tomography revealed marked narrowing secondary to osseous hypertrophy in the air column of the hypopharynx and proximal esophagus. Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis or Forestier’s disease is an idiopathic disease characterized by the ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament of vertebra and some of the extraspinal ligaments. In the present case we aim to discuss an elderly patient who suffered from dysphagia and weight loss and the diagnostic stages.
