Comparison of antioxidant activity of insulin, Ocimum gratissimum L., and Vernonia amygdalina L. in type 1 diabetic rat model

OBJECTIVE： Diabetes mellitus （DM） is known to be associated with increase of oxidative stress products. The direction of effect of any treatment on these products could therefore be a reliable measure of its efficacy on DM. So the aim of this study was to investigate the activity of insulin, Ocimum gratissimum L. （OG） and Vernonia amygdafina L. （VA） on oxidative stress products.METHODS： Thirty-six female Wistar rats weighing 150-200 g were randomly divided into six groups of six rats each. Thirty rats were induced for type 1 DM （DM1） with a single intraperitoneal administration of 65 mg/ kg body weight of streptozotocin. Group 1 was normal control and was administered distilled water while Group 2 served as DM1 control group; Groups 3, 4, 5 and 6 were diabetic rats treated with 208 mg/kg OG （DM1 ＋ OG）, 52 mg/kg VA （DM1 ＋ VA）, 208 mg/kg OG ＋ 52 mg/kg VA （DMI＋OG ＋VA） and 0.16 IU insulin （DM1 ＋ insulin） respectively. Determination of methemoglobin and sulfhemoglobin was achieved by the absorption spectrum principle. Red blood cell （RBC） catalase was assayed by continuous spectrophotometric method.RESULTS： The RBC catalase concentration was significantly decreased in the DM1 and DMI＋VA groups when compared with the normal control. DM1 ＋ OG significantly increased RBC-catalase when compared to DMI. The methemoglobin concentration was significantly reduced in the DM1, DM1 ＋ VA, DM1 ＋ OG ＋ VA and DM1 ＋ insulin groups when compared to the normal control group. The sulfhemoglobin concentration was significantly increased in the diabetic control and the diabetic treated groups when compared to the normal control. DM1 ＋ OG reduced the sulfhemoglobin concentration when compared to DM1. The blood glucose concentration of all the diabetic groups was significantly raised compared to normal control. Geohydraulic Investigation of Aquifer Parameters in Abak, Southern Nigeria

A geophysical investigation was carried out to characterize aquifer parameters and assess the groundwater condition in Abak, southern Nigeria. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) was carried out using Schlumberger configuration in 10 locations within the area. Both manual and computer interpretation of the resistivity data reveals three to four geoelectric units (laterite topsoil, medium-grained sand, coarse-grained sand, and sandy clay sand) which agrees with the lithologic log from existing boreholes. The aquifer layer was identified along the third formation with resistivity values ranging from 1239 - 5719 Ωm and aquifer depth ranging from 30.2 - 54.8 m. The aquifer thickness ranged from 24.2 - 43.7 m. Hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0.1206 m/day - 0.5026 m/day with an average value of 0.29403 m/day. Formation factor ranged from 14.55 - 16.64. Porosity ranged from 15.98% - 22.40%, with an average value of 19.64%. The aquiferous zone falls within the medium/coarse-grained sand. The aquifer is shallow, unconfined, and prolific with a little overburden formation of 13.5 m. The area shows good prospects for groundwater development.

Hypoglycemic efficacy of Ocimum gratissimum and Vernonia amygdalina compared with insulin and glibenclamide in type Ⅰ and type Ⅱ diabetic rat models

Objective: To compare the efficacy of Ocimum gratissimum (O. gratissimum) and Vernonia amygdalina (V. amygdalina) with those of insulin and glibenclamide.Methods: Type Ⅰ and Ⅱ diabetes mellitus (DM) were induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of 65 mg/kg of streptozotocin and intraperitoneal administration of nicotinamide (100 mg/kg) along with streptozotocin, respectively. The state of diabetes was confirmed weekly by testing blood glucose level using a glucometer.Results: The weekly blood glucose levels were higher in type I DM than in type Ⅱ DM. Type Ⅰ DM plus O. gratissimum showed a weekly progressive significant reduction in blood glucose compared to type Ⅰ DM control. Type Ⅰ DM control showed a duration dependent significant higher blood glucose concentration compared to normal control. Type I DM plus V. amygdalina also showed a time dependent significant lower glucose level compared to normal control and type Ⅰ DM control. Combination treatment of type Ⅰ DM (O. gratissimum plus V. amygdalina) showed a significantly elevated glucose concentration compared to normal control which was similar to type I DM control. Insulin treatment in type I DM showed a weekly progressive significant reduction of glucose concentration compared to normal control and type I DM control. Type Ⅱ DM control showed a fairly constant blood glucose concentration throughout the duration of treatment that was significantly higher than that of the normal control. Type Ⅱ DM plus O. gratissimum showed a fairly steady significant reduction of glucose concentration compared to type Ⅱ DM control and normal control. Type Ⅱ DM plus V. amygdalina also showed a fairly constant significant reduction of glucose concentration compared to type Ⅱ DM control and normal control. Development of necrotizing enterocolitis after blood transfusion in very premature neonates

Background Prior studies report conflicting evidence on the association between packed red blood cell(PRBC)transfu-sions and necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC),especially in early weeks of life where transfusions are frequent and spontaneous intestinal perforation can mimic NEC.The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association between PRBC transfusions and NEC after day of life(DOL)14 in very premature neonates.Methods A retrospective cohort analysis of very premature neonates was conducted to investigate association between PRBC transfusions and NEC after DOL 14.Primary endpoints were PRBC transfusions after DOL 14 until the date of NEC diagnosis,discharge,or death.Wilcoxon ranked-sum and Fisher's exact tests,Cox proportional hazards regression,and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to analyze data.Results Of 549 premature neonates,186(34%)received transfusions after DOL 14 and nine(2%)developed NEC(median DOL=38;interquartile range=32-46).Of the nine with NEC after DOL 14,all were previously transfused(P<0.001);therefore,hazard of NEC could not be estimated.Post hoc analysis of patients from DOL 10 onward included five additional patients who developed NEC between DOL 10 and DOL 14,and the hazard of NEC increased by a factor of nearly six after PRBC transfusion(hazard ratio=5.76,95%confidence interval=1.02-32.7;P=0.048).Conclusions Transfusions were strongly associated with NEC after DOL 14.Prospective studies are needed to determine if restrictive transfusion practices can decrease incidence of NEC after DOL 14.

The flow of foreign direct investment(FDI)into a country can benefit both the investing entity and host government.This study employed panel analysis to examine the factors that determine the direction of FDI to the fast-growing BRICS(Brazil,Russia,India,China,and South Africa)and MINT(Mexico,Indonesia,Nigeria,and Turkey)countries.First,we used a pooled time-series cross sectional analysis of data from 2001 to 2011 to estimate and model the determinants of FDI for three samples:BRICS only,MINT only,and BRICS and MINT combined.Then,a fixed effects approach was employed to provide the model for BRICS and MINT combined.The results demonstrate that market size,infrastructure availability,and trade openness play the most significant roles in attracting FDI to BRICS and MINT,while the roles of availability of natural resources and institutional quality are insignificant.To sustain and promote FDI inflow,the governments of BRICS and MINT must ensure that their countries remain attractive for investment by offering a level playing field for investors and political stability.BRICS and MINT governments also need to invest more in their human capital to ensure that their economies can absorb substantial skills and technology spillovers from FDI and promote sustainable long-term economic growth.This study is significant because it contributes to the literature on determinants of FDI by extending the scope of previous studies that often focused on BRICS only.

Fisher and Shannon information entropies for a noncentral inversely quadratic plus exponential Mie-type potential

In this work,we determine the Fisher and Shannon entropies,the expectation values and the squeeze state for a noncentral inversely quadratic plus exponential Mie-type potential analytically.The proposed potential is solved under the Schr?dinger equation using a special Greene Aldrich approximation to the centrifugal term to obtain a normalised wave function within the framework of the Nikiforov–Uvarov method.Numerical results are obtained for different screening parameters:α?=?0.1,0.12 and 0.13 for varying real constant parameter(B).The numerical solutions are obtained only for ground state.The numerical results of Fisher entropy both for position and momentum spaces are in good agreement with existing literature.The normalisation constant,wave function,and probability density plots are carried out using a well designed Mathematica algorithm.The Fourier transform of position space entropy gives the momentum space entropy.

Stability Studies on the Aqueous Extract of the Fresh Leaves of Combretum Micranthum G. Don Used as Antibacterial Agent

The fresh leaves of Combretum micranthum were harvested during the rainy season in Akwa Ibom State, washed and subjected to extraction by maceration in distilled water. Concentration was done with a rotary evaporator. The extracts were tested for content of the following phytochemicals using standard methods: alkaloids, saponins, tannins, anthraquinones, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids and steroids. Antibacterial sensitivity test of the extract was carried out on S. aureus, B. subtilis and E. coli using agar well diffusion method and Ampiclox? as control. The effect of storage time of the extract on its antibacterial activity was determined after the extract was kept at room temperature for 1 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h, respectively. Preparations of 200 mg/mL of the aqueous extract were made with additives as follows: (a) no additive; (b) methyl paraben (0.3%); (c) propyl paraben (0.3%); (d) sodium metabisulfite (0.01%); (e) A combination of methyl paraben (0.3%) and propyl paraben (0.3%); (f) A combination of methyl paraben (0.3%), propyl paraben (0.3%) and sodium metabisulfite (0.01%). A visual observation of the stabilized preparations was employed on daily basis for 30 days. Phytochemical analyses on the aqueous extract of the fresh leaves showed the absence of alkaloids, anthraquinones and flavonoids. Saponins, cardiac glycosides and steroids were present in moderate amounts and there was abundance of tannins. The extract had similar effect on both S. aureus and E. coli cultures but activity was very low with B. subtilis. When S. aureus activity increased with time of storage up to 48 hours, thereafter the activity started reducing. However, the activity of E. coli continued to increase with time (within the study period). Thus, it appears reasonable to store the extract for at least 48 hours before the use for enhanced activity.
