A Review of Epilepsy Diagnosis Using PET Parameters

Epilepsy is caused by abnormal excessive electric discharges from the neurons in the brain. Epileptic seizures are non- specific responses of the brain to many types of insults. The structural abnormalities causing epilepsy can be identified using various state of art imaging methods. Through a combination of brain activity monitoring, imaging and mapping techniques, physicians can locate the specific area in the brain causing epileptic discharges and identify its location in relation to those areas in the brain controlling vital functions. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) has emerged as a useful tool to identify abnormal metabolic activity of the epileptogenic foci. Parameters like asymmetric index, stan- dard uptake value (SUV) etc obtained by PET are processed and analyzed for identifying the origin of epileptic sei- zures. This paper discuss the techniques used to diagnose in general and to localize the epileptogenic regions using post-processing other features on PET imaging.

A case of hemophagocytic syndrome as a complication of <i>Plasmodium</i>vivax malaria

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis syndrome (HPS) is a potentially fatal hyperinflammatory response characterized by a generalized histiocytic proliferation with marked hemophagocytosis in bone marrow [1]. Hemophagocytic syndrome has been associated with genetic mutations, autoimmune diseases, hematological malignancies or infections [2,3]. According to the data from Centre for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) Plasmodium falciparum has been associated with HPS but not the Plasmodium vivax [4-7]. We report a case of hemophagocytic syndrome as a complication of Plasmodium vivax malaria which is a rare presentation according to the data. This patient presented with high grade fever with chills (P. vivax positive), fever however did not respond to anti-malarials. The patient continued to have high grade fever with altered sensorium and deranged liver function with pancytopenia. Since she fulfilled the criteria of (HPS), patient was put on injectable steroids and responded dramatically. Hemophagocytic syndrome is a potentially fatal syndrome and therefore high index suspicion and early treatment is the key to reduce the mortatlity.

India's traditional clothing: a sustainable fashion approach

Sustainable fashion is currently a vastly discussed and debated topic in fashion world. This article critically evaluates various Indian traditional clothing such as Dhoti, Pancha, Mundase, Pheta, Orhni, Sari, Lungi, etc. as a sustainable fashion. As these products are unstitched, fabric wastage in cutting is practically nil. In addition, they can be used to envelop any shape and size of the body. These clothing can be used for a long time. These products have multi-purpose applications. They can be custom-made on demand in an environment-friendly manner. When they are no longer desired, they can be handed over to others or secondhand shops. Their active-life can be prolonged as they are used as cut-towels.
