Objective:To investigate the possible mechanisms of the decreasing fluid and food consumption following Hibiscus sabdariffa(HS) ***:On the 1st day of pregnancy,rats were randomly divided into three groups with six animals per each *** group was given tap water,one was given with extract at 0.6 g/100 mL while the third group was given with extract at 1.8 g/100 mL as their drinking *** groups received normal rat chow and drinking solution ad ***& food intake and weight were measured daily throughout pregnancy and Na^+ concentration in plasma was determined on the 18th day of ***:Results showed decreased fluid and food consumption,decreased weight gain and increased sodium ion concentration in plasma of rats with HS extract compared with the control ***: Consumption of aqueous extract of the calyx of HS during pregnancy decreases food consumption and weight gain through mechanisms that may depend on Na^+ in HS content and elevating Na^+ concentration.

The need for replacement of highly priced soybean meal(SM)in fish diets with unconventional plant materials has become imperative for the sustainability of aquaculture *** study addressed the effect of replacing SM with discarded cashew nut meal(DCNM)on the liver and stomach histology in African catfish(Clarias gariepinus).Total 90 juveniles(24.83±1.52 g)were fed DCNM based diets,inclusion level of 0,50%and 100%.Fish were fed twice daily(8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.)at 5%body weight for 56 *** histology of liver and the stomach were ***-morphological changes of the liver tissue were moderate at 100%DCNM fed fish compared to 50%DCNM and control(0 DCNM).Photomicrograph of stomach of 50%DCNM fed fish showed normal histo-morphological features,while moderate to severe histological distortions were observed in the stomach of 100%DCNM fed *** findings of the present study showed that partial(50%)replacement of SM with DCNM had no adverse nutritional consequence while total(100%)replacement of SM with DCNM in the diet of *** resulted to moderate histological distortions of the liver and stomach.

Objective:To determine the relationship between asymptomatic malaria parasitemia and some oxidative stress parameters in pregnant Nigerian ***:This is a cross-sectional study involving 130 normal pregnant women at various trimesters,who were attending antenatal clinic at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital(UNTH) and Kenechukwu Specialist Hospital in enugu.A comparable group(control),made of 30 non pregnant women was also *** a 24 hour dietary recall,serum levels of vitamin A,C and malondialdehyde(MDA) were determined by colorimetric method,while vitamin e was determined by absorptiometric ***:There were no statistically significant differences in age,parity,estimated calorie,vitamins A,C and e intake between the pregnant and non pregnant groups(P>0.05).The serum level of the vitamins(umol/L) and MDA(umol/L) in control,1st,2nd and 3rd trimesters respectively were:(l)Vitamin A:1.6±0.36 vs 0.6±0.26 vs 0.62±0.33 vs 0.46±0.21(Pe:3.01±1.32 vs 3.45±2.01 vs 9.36±2.75 vs 9.82±2.97(Pever,there were no significant changes in the serum level of the vitamins and MDA between the positive and the negative parasitemia subjects(P>0.05). Conclusions:Asymptomatic malaria parasitemia does not induce additional oxidative stress on pregnant women in *** enormity of acute and complicated attack should be further investigated.

Human noroviruses (HuNoV) are the number one cause of viral gastroenteritis worldwide resulting in a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in all age groups. However, despite the medical relevance of HuNoV, effective treatment against norovirus infection is yet to be developed. In this study, we investigated the anti-Noroviral activity of Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) calyces and Zanthoxylum armatum (ZA) seeds using murine norovirus, a surrogate of human norovirus. The antiviral mechanisms of action were also examined using a gene expression studies and transmission electron microscopy. Our results showed that virus-infected cells were left potentially void of all the cell machineries whereas uninfected cells represent healthy normal and dividing cells. The infected treated cells with extracts showed restoration of the dense cytoplasm, cytoplasmic membrane, and the nucleus. These cells were also associated with the expression of ORF genes. This study demonstrates the antiviral properties of Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) calyces and Zanthoxylum armatum (ZA) and thus indicates their potential as natural remedies to treat noroviruses.

Understanding the Split Characteristics of the Tropical Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) of April 9, 2018, in Northern Ghana Using Infrasound Data

The split characteristics of the tropical Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) of April 9, 2018, in northern Ghana were studied using infrasound data measured by the mobile array (I68CI) which was deployed by C?te d’Ivoire National Data Center (NDC) in collaboration with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). These infrasound measurements were made during a measurement campaign from January 1st, 2018 to December 31, 2018, in northeast Cote d’Ivoire, precisely in Comoe National Park. Graphic Progressive Multi-Channel Correlation (GPMCC) method based on a progressive study of the correlation functions was used to analyze and visualize data. The infrasound detection from this MCS shows clearly a division of the MCS structure into 2 distinct subsystems under the effect of internal and external constraints not well known but related to convection;a smaller subsystem in the north, associated with an area of intense rainfall of about 30 mm/hour and located at 9.5°N - 2°e with an azimuth of 70° and, a large subsystem in the south, associated with a zone of high rainfall of about 96 mm/hour and located at 8.8°N - 1.4°e with an azimuth of 90°. These two subsystems were located 200 km and 260 km from the I68CI station with frequencies of 2.3 Hz and 1 Hz respectively. The mesoscale convective systems in this region are moving from east to West and including several storm cells.

To investigate if Aluminium-Magnesium Silicate (AMS) could make drugs regain effects against resistant pathogens, its effect was tested on sulphadimidine against sulphadimidine-resistant escherichia coli. Two groups of chicks infected with sulphadimidine-resistant e. coli were treated at sulphadimidine dose rate of 1 g/litre of drinking water, with sulphadimidine and with an AMS-sulphadimidine drug formulation, respectively. Two other groups were similarly treated at sulphadimidine dose rate of 0.75 g/litre, while the fifth group served as control. Mean titres of the bacterium in bile of the chicks were compared. Titres, 119,200 ± 55,800 CFU/mL of the group treated with sulphadimidine at rate of 1 g/ litre and 14,800 ± 1700 CFU/mL of the group treated at rate of 0.75 g/litre, did not vary from 33,200 ± 5200 CFU/mL of the control (P > 0.05) but 295,200 ± 106,400 CFU/ml of the group treated at rate of 1 g/litre, with the AMS-sulpha- dimidine drug was significantly (P er than that of the control while 5200 ± 1400 CFU/mL of the group treated at dose of 0.75 g/litre, with the AMS-sulphadimidine drug, reduced significantly (P < 0.05).

Background and Objectives: Childhood acute respiratory infection is a public health problem with significant morbidity and mortality in developing countries. The present study was to assess the sociodemographic determinants of vitamin D levels in patient with acute respiratory infections (ARIs) receiving care in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Southeast Nigeria. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study, conducted in Nnewi, Nigeria, on 250 children with ARI. Sociodemographic data were collected and serum vitamin D levels of the subjects were assayed. The association between sociodemographic variables and vitamin D was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 250 children with ARI aged 1 - 59 months were enrolled in this study, with slight male preponderance (57.2%). About 60% of the population was less than 2 years. The majority (85.6%) of the subjects had adequate vitamin D levels (≥20 ng/dL). The mean serum vitamin D level in the subjects was (52.2 ± 25.6 ng/mL). Multivariate logistic regression showed that only gender was significantly related to vitamin D levels with males found to have a lower risk of vitamin D deficiency. {OR = 0.05 e="font-family:Verdana;"
