Objective:To investigate antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of crude extract from Ipomoea involucrata leaves(Convolvulaceae) in mice and ***:The antinociceptive activity was tested using acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing test in *** antiinflammatory activity was evaluated using egg albumin -induced oedema of rat ***: Phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids,flavonoids,saponins,terpenoids and *** the doses of 25-100 mg/kg,Ipomoea involucrata exhibited dose-dependent and significant increase in pain threshold in acetic acid -induced writhing test of mice (P<0.05,student t-test) The administration of Ipomoea involucrata leaf extract(25-100 mg/ kg) showed dose-dependent decreases in paw volume of egg albumin induced oedema in rats and a significant higher anti-inflammatory activity compared to the standard control(Aspirin). Conclusions:These results support the claims on the traditional use of the of Ipomoea involucrata leaves in the treatment of toothache,rheumatic pains and other inflammatory *** on the isolation and structural elucidation of the active principle are still needed being carried out.

Background: Ovarian cysts in pregnancy are common and are usually small benign functional cysts (corpus luteum and theca-lutein cysts) that usually resolve spontaneously between 14 and 16 weeks of gestation. However, large ovarian cysts are rare in pregnancy, with an incidence of 0.2% - 2%, and most of them are benign. The first-line diagnostic modality is ultrasonography. Complications of ovarian cysts in pregnancy include miscarriage, ovarian torsion, cyst rupture, etc. Laparotomy is the treatment modality commonly used in our setting, and histopathologic diagnosis is important for the prognosis of the treatment. Case Presentation: MC is a 32-year-old G3P2002 married housewife of the Bakweri tribe who was referred to our department because of progressive abdominal discomfort and shortness of breath for 1 month’s duration. Her medical history is consistent with two normal vaginal deliveries at term and the use of implants (for contraception) until one month prior to the index pregnancy. Her booking visit was at 16 weeks gestation at a primary (missionary) healthcare facility, and she underwent ultrasonography and was diagnosed with a singleton viable intrauterine pregnancy and a simple septate cystic mass measuring 17 cm situated on top of the uterus, appearing to originate from the left ovary. She was referred to seek the expertise of an obstetrician-gynecologist, but she came to our department at 35 weeks gestation and underwent cesarean birth at 37 weeks gestation. In the pathological review, serous cystadenoma was diagnosed, and there were no positive findings in peritoneal cytology. Conclusion: The ultrasonographic diagnosis of the huge ovarian cyst in the index case was after 16 weeks gestation because of her late booking visit at 16 weeks gestation. The index case deferred referral to the obstetrician because of a lack of finances, came to our department at 35 weeks gestation because of abdominal pain that may have resulted from a torsion of the ovarian cyst

REDISSE in Benin and Lessons Learned for the Management of Public Health Emergencies after Five Years of Implementation

Introduction: Benin was embarked on phase 3 of the REDISSE Benin project (Regional Disease Surveillance Systems Enhancement) which began in 2018. The objectives were in five key components namely, Surveillance and health information;Laboratory capacity building;Emergency preparedness and response;Human resources management for effective disease surveillance and epidemic preparedness;and Institutional Capacity Building, Project Management, Coordination and Advocacy. After five years of implementation, this study aimed at the documentation of lessons learned and best practices. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Apart from individual semi-structured interviews, a thematic workshops bringing together the project’s main stakeholders recruited on an exhaustive way by component to identify and validate lessons learned, good practices and propose improvement mechanisms to be taken into account by the sector. Criteria were set up and used to validate best practices and lessons learned. Results: A total 54 (Surveillance workshop), 47 (Preparedness & response workshop), 53 (Human Resources workshop), 26 (Laboratories workshop) participated to the thematic workshops, and five interviews. The good practices (33: 9 for animal health, 7 for human health and 17 crosscutting) and lessons learned (10: 3 for animal health and 7 for human health) have been identified and have been the subject, depending on the case, of proposals for improvement or conditions necessary for their maintenance. Discussion: The richness of a project lies not only in the immediate achievement of its results, but also and above all, in its usefulness for similar interventions, whether in the local, regional, national or international context. It is in this context that the REDISSE project has set out to make public the various lessons learned and best practices from the implementation of its activities over a period of some five consecutive years.

Strength Characteristics of Inoculated and Nodularised Thin Wall Ductile Iron Castings

Carbide precipitates in Thin Wall Ductile Iron (TWDI) used for automotive applications needs to be eliminated or reduced for improved strength, ductility, crack propagation resistance and good machinability. Ductile iron thin section profiles (≤3 mm) present danger of massive carbide precipitations in the as-cast sample. Precipitated carbide phase is brittle and negatively affects the mechanical properties of the iron matrix. The suppression of carbide formation is associated with the nucleating properties of the nodularizer and innoculant alloys. This treatment is vital in ensuring that carbide precipitation, flake graphite structure and non-nodular graphite phases are reduced or completely eliminated in the TWDI castings. Therefore, the temperature and technique of treatment would influence the yield of the process, and ultimately the mechanical properties. In this study, the effect of nodularization and inoculation treatment temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TWDI castings is examined. The results indicate that good nodularity and nodule count with better percent elongations are achieved using low treatment temperatures in descending order of 1490°C, 1470°C and 1450°C, but have negative effect at lower treatment temperature of 1430°C. However, TWDI castings have superior properties in terms of nodule counts and nodularity at 1450°C. Treatment temperature does not produce significant influence on ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and hardness of TWDI castings. TWDI castings show poor nodularity, nodule count and ductility at higher inoculation treatment temperatures of 1550°C, 1530°C and 1510°C.

Background: Infertility is a complex disorder with significant psycho-social and economic consequences. It globally affects 10% - 15% of couples. In Cameroon, little is known about what women do to overcome the psychosocial aspects of the disease. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the support systems and coping strategies of infertile women attending the outpatient consultation unit of the Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery and Reproductive Teaching Hospital (CHRACERH), Yaoundé, Cameroon. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from the 14th of March to the 6th of April 2023 at CHRACERH Yaoundé. A total of 190 participants were recruited using a convenience sampling method. Data regarding socio-demographic characteristics, support systems and coping strategies were collected using a pretested questionnaire. Descriptive and analytic statistics were conducted using SPSS version 25. Results: The mean age of participants was 39.52 ± 7.64 years. The majority 78.9% of participants were workers (public, private sector, or traders) and were Christians 95.8%. The most common source of psychological support was from family 76.8 and husbands 72.63%. Most of the participants 89.5% resorted to prayer and getting busy 48.4% as a coping strategy. There was no statistically significant relationship between coping strategies and psychological disorders p > 0.05. Conclusion: The main support system of participants was family, husband, and friends. Prayer, getting busy and adoption were the most common coping strategies. There is a need for the Ministry of Public Health and other stakeholders to put in place other support systems and coping strategies (FELICIA) used elsewhere and provide adequate health education and infection control to prevent infertility in Cameroon.

Objectives: To evaluate the in vitro activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts of stem bark of Terminalia glaucescens on the eggs and larval stages of Haemonchus contortus of sheep. Methods: The eggs were exposed for 24 hours in five different concentrations (625, 1250, 2500, 3750 and 5000 μg/ml) of methanol, hot water (decoction) and cold water extracts at room temperature (25°C). Distilled water, 1.25% DMSO and Albendazole were used as negatives and positive control respectively in the bioassay. Results: A significant effect was obtained with all of the three extracts and differences were observed depending on the parasitic stage. Hot water extract (HWE), Methanol (MET) and Cold water extract (CWE) inhibited embryonic development by 98.1%, 96% and 86.5% respectively at 5000 μg/ml, meanwhile Albendazole had a 77.9% inhibition. For the mean inhibition rate of egg hatching, there was a general increase in the inhibition rate with increase in concentration of the extract from 625 to 5000 μg/ml. Methanol extract had the highest inhibition rate in all concentration from 625 to 5000 μg/ml. Concerning larval mortality, HWE had the highest effect in L1 larval mortality in all concentration above 1250 μg/ml. Distilled water had very little larval mortality on L1 and L2 larvae by 3.3 and 3.3% respectively. Conclusion: This in vitro study brought out the ovicidal and larvicidal properties of stem bark of Terminalia glaucescens.

Background: Hysterectomy is one of the most performed surgeries through the world, even in Sub Saharan setting where indications are not rare. Objective: To study the frequency, indications, surgical methods, and complications of hysterectomies at the Douala General Hospital. Patients and methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study over a 20-year period, from the 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2019, in the department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the Douala General Hospital, a tertiary health facility in Cameroon, central Africa. All patients who underwent hysterectomies for gynaecological or obstetrical indications and whose files were complete were retained. Results: Out of a total of 7126 gynaecological and obstetrical surgical cases 1007 were hysterectomies, giving a frequency of 14.21%. Meanwhile, 968 files fulfilled the

Evolution and Risk Factors of Maternal Mortality in Cameroon: A Case Control Study

Background: Maternal mortality is still high in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Cameroon where more efforts to reduce maternal mortality and provide universal access to reproductive health should be made. This study aims to see the evolution of maternal mortality and identify associated risk factors in Laquintinie hospital in Cameroon. Methods: A manual review of records for 166 maternal deaths (cases) and 322 controls was undertaken using a standard audit form. The sample included pregnant women aged 16 - 46 years admitted at the maternity of Laquintinie Hospital in Douala, Cameroon from January 2017 to December 2022. Software SSPS 3 and Logistic regression analysis were used to analyze data. Results: One hundred and sixty-six (166) maternal deaths were identified during the study period for 14,114 live births, representing a maternal mortality ratio of 1176/100,000 live births. Factors significantly associated with maternal mortality included: young age (15 - 24 years) (aOR 0.11, 95% CI 0.00 - 0.76, p = 0.037), Alcohol intake (aOR 22.79, 95% CI 1.04 - 501.3, p = 0.047), Abortion or ectopic pregnancy (aOR 61.53, 95% CI 1.29 - 2927.3, p = 0.037), having no antenatal visits (aOR 388.3 95% CI 5.6 - 2675.9, p = 0.006), being admitted with hemorrhage (aOR 343.7, 95% CI 16.2 - 7276.0, p ,713.0, 95% CI 128.2 - 5,989,223.3, p CI 0.00 - 0.18, p = 0.016). Conclusion: Despite slight decrease in maternal mortality, early diagnosis of pregnancy and good Antenatal care associated with maternal health education are important factors for reducing maternal mortality. Young women were the most affected. Singles, alcoholics, women with a no or only primary education level, and referred women represented the majority of deceased cases.
