Seepage Investigation on an Existing Dam u.ing Very Low Frequ.ncy Electromagnetic (VLF-EM) Methods: A Case Stu.y of Shagari Earth Dam, Sokoto, North Western Nigeria

Very low frequ.ncy (VLF-EM) was u.ed to assess variations in overbu.den composition, bedrock lithology and the hidden Sedimentary stru.tu.es within the fou.dation of Shagari Dam of the sedimentary basin of Northwestern Nigeria. Fou. VLF-electromagnetic (EM) traverses were occu.ied at 10 m in-tervals. The VLF normal and filtered real component irregu.arities identify major geological interfaces su.pected to be fau.ts/fractu.ed z.nes. The points of crossover between the real and imaginary components delineate the fractu.ed z.nes, which were identified as areas of possible seepage (slou.hing and piping). The fractu.ed z.nes are su.pected to be present at all traverses. In total, 38 fractu.ed z.nes were identified along the dam embankment and canal site, while 17 major fractu.es occu.rence dippers along the Traverses at a point, Traverse 1 (F3, F4, F5, F7, F10, F11), Traverse 2 (F12, F13, F21, F22), Traverse 3 (F23, F24, F29) and Traverse 4 (F32, F33, F34, F38), and coincide with cross over point at 4 traverses. These seepage z.nes cau.e heterogeneity in the su.-su.face stru.tu.e that cou.d be prime to dam failu.e which in tu.n leads to the flooding, decreases in irrigations activities of the peoples leaving arou.d the dam and loss of several hu.dreds of life when care not taken. The resu.t of the stu.y su.gests that VLF is su.table for observing seepages in embankment dams.

An integrated geophysical investigation u.ing very low frequ.ncy electro-magnetic (VLF-EM) and electrical resistivity methods u.ing (VES) techniqu. has been carried ou. for investigation of possible cau.es of dam failu.e in Kali, Aliero Northwestern Nigeria. A total of Three 3 (VLF-EM) traverses and Ten 10 vertical electrical sou.dings (VES) techniqu.s have been carried ou. to identify the fractu.e z.nes, seepage and possible threat that lead to the collapse of the dam. The interpretation of VLF-EM data is carried ou. qu.litatively u.ing Fraser and Karou.-Hjelt filters and the interpretation of sou.ding data is done u.ing IPI2 win software. VLF-EM data signifies the exact fractu.e z.nes fou.ded on higher valu.s of relative cu.rent density that coincide to the su.su.face fractu.e. The su.vey was condu.ted on an interval of 10 m interval along traverses at Sou.h-North direction ranging from 620 - 640 m in length. The plot of filtered real and filtered imaginary identified noticeable fractu.e z.ne close to the su.face which was later fu.ther delineated by (VES) techniqu.. VES sou.dings were carried ou. at locations of prominent VLF anomalies presu.ably typical of basement fractu.e u.ing AB/2 of 80 m. Resu.ts interpreted show layers thickness and their corresponding resistivity, top soil (0.5 m to 3.45 m, 51.9 Ωm to 318 Ωm), u.derlain by clay to confined clay (4.56 m to 54 m, 7.88 Ωm to 60.2 Ωm) which is u.derlain by fractu.ed/fresh basement (5.76 m to 73.9 m, 40.3 Ωm to 197 Ωm). The overbu.den materials u.derlain are far away to su.su.face (bed rock) in most of the area to su.port the dam. The clay materials which cou.d serve as condu.t, exist within the shallow overbu.den which was not excavated du.ing the constru.tion. Therefore it was conclu.ed that the dam cannot retain its strength to oppose the dam against collapse.

A mathematical model for avian influ.nz. with optimal control strategies is presented as a system of discrete time delay differential equ.tions （DDEs） and its important math-ematical featu.es are analyz.d. In alignment to manage this, we develop an optimally controlled pandemic model of avian influ.nz. and insert a time delay with exponential factor. Then we apply two controlled fu.ctions in the form of biosecu.ity of pou.try and the edu.ation campaign against avian influ.nz. to control the disperse of the dis- ease. Ou. optimal control strategies will minimiz. the nu.ber of contaminated hu.ans and contaminated birds. We also derive the basic reprodu.tion nu.ber to examine the dynamical behavior of the model and demonstrate the existence of the controlled system. For the ju.tification of Ou. work, we present nu.erical simu.ations.

A note on hydrodynamics from dissipative particle dynamics

We calcu.ate cu.rent correlation fu.ctions （CCFs） of dissipative particle dy- namics （DPD） and compare them with resu.ts of molecu.ar dynamics （MD） and solu.ions of lineariz.d hydrodynamic equ.tions. In particu.ar, we consider three versions of DPD, the empirical/classical DPD, coarse-grained （CG） DPD with radial-direction interactions only and fu.l （radial, transversal, and rotational） interactions between particles. To fa- cilitate qu.ntitative discu.sions, we consider specifically a star-polymer melt system at a moderate density. For bonded molecu.es, it is straightforward to define the CG variables and to fu.ther derive CG force fields for DPD within the framework of the Mori-z.anz.g formalism. For both transversal and longitu.inal cu.rent correlation fu.ctions （TCCFs and LCCFs）, we observe that resu.ts of MD, DPD, and hydrodynamic solu.ions agree with each other at the continu.m limit. Below the continu.m limit to certain length scales, resu.ts of MD deviate significantly from hydrodynamic solu.ions, whereas resu.ts of both empirical and CG DPD resemble those of MD. This indicates that the DPD method with Markovian force laws possibly has a larger applicability than the continu.m description of a Newtonian flu.d. This is worth being explored fu.ther to represent gen- eraliz.d hydrodynamics.

Crosslinking treatment of collagen has often been u.ed to improve the biological stability and mechanical properties of 3D porou. collagen scaffolds. However, accompanying these improvements, the collagen fibril su.face becomes hydrophobic natu.e resu.ting in a redu.ed su.face wettability. The wetting of the collagen fibril by cu.tu.e mediu. is redu.ed and it is difficu.t for the mediu. to diffu.e into the 3D stru.tu.e of a porou. collagen scaffold. This paper reports a ＂perfu.ion processing＂ strategy u.ing oz.ne to improve the su.face wettability of chemical crosslinked collagen scaffolds. Su.face wettability, su.face composition and biological stability were analyz.d to evalu.te the effectiveness of this su.face processing strategy. It was observed that oz.ne perfu.ion processing improved su.face wettability for both exterior and interior su.faces of the porou. 3D collagen scaffold. The improvement in wettability is attribu.ed to the incorporation of oxygen-containing fu.ctional grou.s onto the su.face of the collagen fibrils, as confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy （XPS） analysis. This leads to a significant improvement in water taking capability withou. compromising the bu.k biological stability and mechanical properties, and confirms that oz.ne perfu.ion processing is an effective tool to modify the wettability both for interior and exterior su.faces throu.hou. the scaffold.

Let L =-△+V(x) be a Schrodinger operator, where △ is the Laplacian on R^n,while nonnegative potential V(x) belonging to the reverse Holder class. The aim of this paper is to give generaliz.d weighted Morrey estimates for the bou.dedness of Marcinkiewicz.integrals with rou.h kernel associated with Schrodinger operator and their ***, the bou.dedness of the commu.ator operators formed by BMO fu.ctions and Marcinkiewicz.integrals with rou.h kernel associated with Schrodinger operators is discu.sed on the generaliz.d weighted Morrey spaces. As its special cases, the corresponding resu.ts of Marcinkiewicz.integrals with rou.h kernel associated with Schrodinger operator and their commu.ators have been dedu.ed, respectively. Also, Marcinkiewicz.integral operators, rou.h Hardy-Littlewood(H-L for short) maximal operators, Bochner-Riesz.means and parametric Marcinkiewicz.integral operators which satisfy the conditions of ou. main resu.ts can be considered as some examples.

Despite significant progress in the past decade, mesoscopic methods are still u.der development. New formu.ation in the models, novel theo- retical interpretations, and innovative nu.erical algorithms often appear in literatu.e. These mesoscopic methods have been already applied to a large nu.ber of problems, inclu.ing poly- mer and colloidal su.pensions, mu.tiphase flu.ds, biological materials, and blood rheology. New applications of mesoscopic modeling in different areas are still emerging.

Changes in Calcareou. Nannofossil Assemblages and Paleoenvironmental Interpretation of the Early Miocene Lice Formation, Kahramanmara? Basin, Tu.key, East Mediterranean

This stu.y investigated the calcareou. nannofossil assemblages in detail from the early Miocene aged Lice Formation ou.cropping in the Kahramanmara? basin. The biostratigraphy of calcareou. nannofossils was ou.lined and paleoenvironmental featu.es determined. In 81 samples taken from three measu.ed sections in the region, 17 calcareou. nannofossil genu. and 48 nannofossil species were identified. These calcareou. nannofossil genu. and species identified the Lice Formation as being in the CNM4 nannofossil bioz.ne. The abu.dance and diversity of early Miocene calcareou. nannofossil species varied in the measu.ed sections, with the samples generally moderate-poor, apart from a few samples. The relative abu.dance of individu.ls of Cyclicargolithu. floridanu., Coccolithu. pelagicu., Reticu.ofenestra hagii and Sphenolithu. moriformis species, with paleoecological importance identified in the stu.y region, indicate that in early Miocene times, the basin in which the Lice Formation deposited was meso-eu.rophic with excess nu.rient inpu., temperate and generally stable shallow marine conditions.
