Bac.grou.d: Su.gic.l treatment of lu.bar spinal stenosis by posterior spinal dec.mpression may be indic.ted if non-su.gic.l management for the symptoms of low bac. and lower limbs radic.0}ar pains is u.su.c.ssfu. and/or in patients with persisting or worsening neu.ologic.l defic.ts. It has been reported to be an effec.ive treatment modality in well selec.ed patients. This proc.du.e is however not withou. possible c.mplic.tions whic. c.n adversely affec. the ou.c.me of treatment in the affec.ed patients. This prospec.ive stu.y was therefore u.dertaken to evalu.te the early fu.c.ional ou.c.me of posterior spinal dec.mpression for lu.bar spinal stenosis at ou. health institu.ion. Method: All patients with symptomatic.lu.bar spinal stenosis admitted for posterior spinal dec.mpression and who met the inc.u.ion c.iteria were rec.u.ted with their written informed c.nsent. The patients’ pain severity and fu.c.ional disability were assessed preoperatively with visu.l analogu. sc.le (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). The VAS and ODI were also u.ed to reassess the patients postoperatively, at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks respec.ively. All intraoperative and/or postoperative c.mplic.tions were doc.0}ented and the resu.ts were analyzed. Resu.ts: The patients’ mean preoperative lower bac. pain and leg pain VAS sc.re was 8.26 ± 1.46 while the mean preoperative ODI was 62.4% ±13.56. The c.mmonest c.mbination of spinal dec.mpressive proc.du.e done in the patients was laminec.omy + foraminotomy in 10 (25% patients). The most c.mmon dec.mpressed spinal level was L4/L5 (89.7%);while almost equ.l nu.ber of patients had either one spinal level or two-spinal level dec.mpression (43.6% and 46.1% respec.ively). Postoperative pain assessment showed a mean VAS of 3.79 ± 1.15, 2.55 ± 1.27 and 2.00 ± 1.41 at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks respec.ively (p = 0.000). Bac.grou.d: One of the key strategies in the HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs in Nigeria is Voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT). However, its utilization among young adults, particularly undergraduates, is very low. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of non-uptake of VCT among undergraduates. Methods: A cross sectional study using quantitative methods was conducted. Using simple random sampling, three faculties were selected out of nine and 422 respondents were selected from three faculties. Interviews were conducted using pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires. Data analysis was done using statistical package for social sciences version 20. Prevalence was measured by the percentage of respondents that had never used VCT. Analytical statistics were done using chi-square test to measure strength of association between VCT uptake and knowledge and attitude of respondents. Association with P-value 0.05 was considered significant. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of non-uptake of VCT. The associations were presented as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals. Malaria infec.ion is assoc.ated with inc.eased generation of free radic.ls. This stu.y investigated the antioxidant ac.ivity of ethanolic.leaf extrac.s of Spilanthes u.iginosa, Oc.mu. basilic.0}, Hyptis spic.gera and c.mbopogon c.tratu.. Seventy two (72) swiss mic. of both sexes were u.ed. All the mic. were treated intraperitoneally with 0.2 ml parasitized blood su.pension and parasitemia assessed by thin blood films stained with Geimsa stain after seventy two hou.s. The mic. were divided into six grou.s namely;A, B, c. D, E, and F of twelve mic. eac.. Grou.s B, c. D and E were su.divided into three (3): B1, B2, B3, c., c., c., D1, D2, D3, E1, E2 and E3, fou. in eac. su.grou.. The su.grou.s were treated with the extrac.s of Spilanthes u.iginosa (Sw), Oc.mu. basilic.0}, Hyptis spiligera and c.mbopogon c.tratu. eac. for five (5) c.nsec.0}ive days with 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight respec.ively via oral intu.ation. Two c.ntrol grou.s, A and F were u.ed. The negative c.ntrol (A) was treated daily with 5 ml/kg normal saline while positive c.ntrol grou. (F) was treated with 5 mg/kg body weight of c.loroqu.ne. The resu.ts indic.ted a general signific.nt (P c.ease in the lipid peroxidation c.nc.ntrations of the parasitized treated mic. when c.mpared to parasitized u.treated mic. on the last day. A general signific.nt dose dependent inc.ease (P u.eroxide dismu.ase (SOD), c.talase and glu.athione perioxidase ac.ivities as well as redu.ed glu.athione c.nc.ntrations in the treated mic. exc.pt at a dosage of 200 mg/kg body weight for all the plants. The effec.s of the extrac.s were signific.ntly higher (P c.loroqu.ne. These resu.ts su.gest that the ethanolic.extrac.s of these plants may c.ntribu.e to the protec.ion of malaria infec.ed mic. against oxidative damage by improving antioxidant statu. in a dose dependent manner.

Su.ar beet root maggot （SBRM, Tetanops myopaeformis von R6der） is a major bu. poorly u.derstood insec. pest of su.ar beet （Beta vu.garis L.）. The molec.0}ar mec.a- nisms u.derlying plant defense responses are well doc.0}ented, however, little information is available abou. c.mplementary mec.anisms for insec. adaptive responses to overc.me host resistanc.. To date, no stu.ies have been pu.lished on SBRM gene expression pro- filing. Su.pressive su.trac.ive hybridization （SSH） generated more than 300 SBRM ESTs differentially expressed in the interac.ion of the pest with a moderately resistant （F1016） and a su.c.ptible （F1010） su.ar beet line. Blast2GO v. 3.2 searc. indic.ted that over 40% of the differentially expressed genes had known fu.c.ions, primarily driven by fru.t fly D. melanogaster genes. Expression patterns of 18 selec.ed EST c.ones were c.nfirmed by RT-Pc. analysis. Gene Ontology （GO） analysis predic.ed a dominanc. of metabolic.and c.talytic.genes involved in the interac.ion of SBRM with its host. SBRM genes fu.c.ion- ing du.ing development, regu.ation, c.llu.ar proc.ss, signaling and u.der stress c.nditions were annotated. SBRM genes that were c.mmon or u.iqu. in response to resistant or su.c.ptible interac.ions with the host were identified and their possible roles in insec. responses to the host are disc.0}sed.

Bac.grou.d: Vu.va haematoma is an u.c.mmon c.mplic.tion of c.ildbirth that c.n c.u.e maternal death if not properly managed. We present a c.se of large vu.va haematoma managed c.nservatively with good ou.c.me in u.TH Enu.u. c.inic.l Presentation: This was a c.se of an u.booked 24 years old primiparou. woman referred from a private hospital to u.TH, Enu.u.on ac.ou.t of left-sided vu.va swelling of fou. hou.s du.ation following a spontaneou. vaginal delivery of a live male baby that weighed 3.6 kilogrammes. She was given episiotomy whic. was repaired. Vaginal examination showed a swelling involving left labia majora and minora and extending to the perineal region and vagina. It measu.ed 12 c. × 10 c., firm and mildly tender. She was resu.c.tated with intravenou. flu.d, transfu.ed with two u.its of blood and c.mmenc.d on antibiotic.and analgesic. The vu.va haematoma was monitored and it remained the same size for two days, and then progressively regressed. She was disc.arged home on the 9th day. c.nc.u.ion: c.nservative management of large vu.va haematoma involving good c.u.seling, c.rrec.ion of anaemia, institu.ion of antibiotic., analgesic.and c.ose monitoring leads to effec.ive resolu.ion, redu.ed c.st, sc.rring, pain and dyspareu.ia.

Treatment of patients with Type 1 diabetes with c.ntinu.u. su.c.0}aneou. insu.in infu.ion (c.II) was re-introdu.ed in Denmark in this millenniu. and initiated in the diabetes c.inic. Frederic.a Hospital, in 2005. The aim of the present stu.y was to present yearly data of qu.lity from 2005 to 2013 from a c.inic.l database of patients treated with c.II in rou.ine prac.ic.. Methods: A database was established in 2009-2010. Data from 2005 to 2009 are retrospec.ive, data from 2009 to 2013 prospec.ive. From 2009, patient satisfac.ion was measu.ed by validated qu.stionnaires. Resu.ts: By 31 Dec.mber 2013, the database c.ntained data from 143 ac.ive patients. HbA1c.(median and range) dec.eased from 64 (40 - 126) mmol/mol (8.0 (5.8 - 13.7)%) (n = 104) to 60 (36 - 98) mmol/mol (7.6 (5.4 - 11.1)%) (n = 134) (p c.II. The improved glyc.emic.c.ntrol was maintained eac. year u.til ≥5 years after initiation of c.II (p c.ange in weight. The nu.ber of attac.s of severe hypoglyc.emia was redu.ed from 60 attac.s in 21 patients (n = 104) the year before c.II to only 5 attac.s in 5 patients in 2013 (n = 134) (p c.rresponding to an inc.denc. of 3.7 episodes per 100 patient years. Eac. year after initiation of c.II u.til ≥5 years, the nu.ber of episodes of severe hypoglyc.emia was redu.ed (p c. 2005, nine episodes of ketoac.dosis have been registered in eight patients c.rresponding to an inc.denc. of 1.4 episodes per 100 patient years. Patient satisfac.ion was high one year after initiation of c.II (p c.nc.u.ion: c.ange of treatment to c.II is ac.ompanied by an improvement in glyc.emic.c.ntrol, very pronou.c.d redu.tion in severe hypoglyc.emia, low levels of diabetic.ketoac.dosis, and pronou.c.d patient satisfac.ion.

Soil Health Assessment Methods and Relationship with Wheat Yield

Soil qu.lity assessment methods, based on different attribu.es, are available bu. not well c.librated/validated for su.sequ.nt operational applic.tions. We have developed a method for soil qu.lity index assessment by c.nsidering soil textu.e, organic.c.rbon, pH, available water, c.tion exc.ange c.pac.ty, bu.k density, total porosity, satu.ated hydrau.ic.c.ndu.tivity, salinity, aggregate stability, slope and soil depth. The sc.ring was done on 0 - 100 sc.le and the lowest sc.re was assigned to the most limiting fac.or of c.op growth and development. Attribu.e-wise rating was made by u.ing Mac.os developed in MS-Exc.l and IDRISI3.2 was u.ed to delineate the rating maps. Abou. 64.6% soils sc.red more than 60 and the best soil grou. (sc.re > 70) was only abou. 15%. Soil health sc.re, as determined throu.h ou. method, showed good relationship with wheat yield. Mu.tiplic.tive response fu.c.ion was more sensitive than simple regression model. The c.rrelation analyses with one or two attribu.es with most severe stress and relatively with lower rating valu.s showed better predic.ability of wheat yields. The soil qu.lity index as estimated from princ.pal c.mponent analysis having strongly loaded (>0.75) fac.ors showed inferior c.rrelation with grain yields of wheat than geometric.mean approac.. It is c.nc.u.ed that geometric.mean approac. for soil health sc.ring c.n be u.ilized in similar environments arou.d the globe with or withou. fu.ther improvement.

Fu.ther, we propose the mu.ti-label adaptive weighted broad learning system(MLAW-BLS) to adaptively adju.t the spec.fic.weights and valu.s of labels of MLW-BLS and c.nstru.t an effic.ent imbalanc.d c.assifier set. Extensive experiments are c.ndu.ted on variou. datasets to evalu.te the effec.iveness of the proposed model, and the resu.ts demonstrate its su.eriority over other advanc.d approac.es.
