Prevalence of substance use among moroccan adolescents and association with academic achievement

AIM: To investigate rates of drug and alcohol use and their association with academic performance in Moroccan youth. METHODS: An adapted version of the European School Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs survey was administered to 2139 10^(th)-12^(th) graders in 36 Moroccan public high schools. Two multiple logistic regressions were completed, one for male and one for female subjects. Grade average was used as a two-part outcome variable, and drug use was used as a four-level categorical independent variable. Parents' education levels and socioeconomic status were included as covariates. RESULTS: Of the subjects, 181 girls(16%) and 390 boys(40%) reported ever having used alcohol, hashish, or psychotropic drugs. Girls who had used any of those substances in the past 30 d demonstrated an adjusted odds ratio(AOR) of 2.62(95%CI: 1.31-5.22) of having average or below-average grades, and those with any lifetime use showed an AOR of 1.72(95%CI: 1.07-2.77). Among the boys, use in the past 30 d was associated with an AOR of 2.08(95%CI: 1.33-3.24) of average or below average grades, and use in the last 12 mo with an AOR of 1.74(95%CI: 1.00-3.05). Any lifetime use among male and previous 12 mo use among female subjects were not significantly associated with academic ***: Among Moroccan adolescents, drug use is substantially different between boys and girls. In both genders, lower academic achievement was associated with alcohol, hashish, or psychotropic drug use in the last 30 d.

Effect of external and internal cues on core muscle activation during the Sahrmann five-level core stability test

BACKGROUND Pain in the back or pelvis or fear of back pain may affect the timing or cocontraction of the core *** both static and dynamic movements,the Sahrmann core stability test provides an assessment of core muscle activation and a person's ability to stabilize the lumbopelvic *** cues and images can be used to increase the activation of these *** attain optimal movement patterns,it will be necessary to determine what cueing will give the most effective results for core *** To investigate the effects of external and internal cues on core muscle activation during the Sahrmann five-level core stability *** Total 68 participants(21.83±3.47 years)were randomly allocated to an external(n=35)or internal cue group(n=33).Participants performed the Sahrmann fivelevel core stability test without a cue as baseline and the five-level stability exercises with an internal or external *** cue group received a pressure biofeedback unit(PBU),and the internal cue group received an audio cue.A Delsys Trigno^(TM)surface electromyography unit was used for muscle activation from the rectus abdominis,external oblique,and transverse abdominis/internal oblique *** Linear mixed effects model analysis showed that cueing had a significant effect on core muscle activation(P=0.001);however,there was no significant difference between cue types(internal or external)(P=0.130).CONCLUSION Both external and internal cueing have significant effects on core muscle activation during the Sahrmann five-level core stability test and the PBU does not create higher muscle activation than internal cueing.

Activation and signaling of the p38 MAP kinase pathway

The family members of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases mediate a wide variety of cellular behaviors in response to extracellular stimuli. One of the four main sub-groups, the p38 group of MAP kinases, serve as a nexus for signal transduction and play a vital role in numerous biological processes. In this review, we highlight the known characteristics and components of the p38 pathway along with the mechanism and consequences of p38 activation. We focus on the role of p38 as a signal transduction mediator and examine the evidence linking p38 to inflammation, cell cycle, cell death, development, cell differentiation, senescence and tumorigenesis in specific cell types. Upstream and downstream components of p38 are described and questions remaining to be answered are posed. Finally, we propose several directions for future research on p38.

Predicting the temporal transferability of model parameters through a hydrological signature analysis

Attention has recently increased on the use of hydrological signatures as a potential tool for assessing the fidelity of model structures and providing insights into the transfer of model *** utility of hydrological signatures as model performance/reliability indicators in a calibration-validation testing scenario(i.e.,the temporal transfer of model parameters)is the focus of this *** Probability Distributed Model,a flexible conceptual hydrological model,is used to test the approach across a number of catchments included in the MOPEX data set We explore the change in model performance across calibration and validation time periods and contrast it to the corresponding change in several hydrological signatures to assess signature *** are explored in finer detail by utilizing a moving window approach to calibration and validation time *** results of this study indicated that the most informative signature can vary,both spatially and temporally,based on physical and climatic characteristics and their interaction to the model ***,one signature could not adequately illustrate complex watershed behaviors nor predict model performance in new analysis periods.

Investigating bee dietary preferences along a gradient of floral resources:how does resource use align with resource availability?

Bee dietary preferences,or the floral resources that they consistently collect,likely impact where a species can *** this reason it is likely that bee dietary preferences are dependent upon the composition of the plant *** this study,we evaluated floral visits and pollen loads of the mining bee,Andrena angustitarsata Viereck,across a 630 km north-south range to understand dietary preferences along a floral resource *** research,in a more geographically limited area,suggested this species was an eclectic oligolege on predominantly Apiaceae and in part *** the present study we found the species predominately visited and collected pollen from Apiaceae and Rosaceae,but visited 12 flower families and collected pollen from 32,distinguishing them as generalist *** frequency of Apiaceae pollen on the bees and the species-level specialization index(a measure of visit specialization)were higher in regions with higher Apiaceae *** addition Apiaceae and Rosaceae were the only plant families significantly preferred for pollen collection,regardless of floral *** conclude that across our study region *** has a generalist dietary breadth,but also has dietary preference for Apiaceae and *** study indicates that while bees may overall make generalist foraging decisions they may still prefer and likely benefit from selecting fewer flower taxa.

Modern computer systems are increasingly bounded by the available or permissible power at multiple layers from individual components to data *** cope with this reality,it is necessary to understand how power bounds im-pact performance,especially for systems built from high-end nodes,each consisting of multiple power hungry *** placing an inappropriate power bound on a node or a component can lead to severe performance loss,coordinat-ing power allocation among nodes and components is mandatory to achieve desired performance given a total power *** this article,we describe the paradigm of power bounded high-performance computing,which considers coordinated power bound assignment to be a key factor in computer system performance analysis and *** apply this paradigm to the problem of power coordination across multiple layers for both CPU and GPU *** several case studies,we demonstrate how the principles of balanced power coordination can be applied and adapted to the inter-play of workloads,hardware technology,and the available total power for performance improvement.

Emerging role of microRNAs in lipid metabolism

micro RNAs(mi RNAs or mi Rs) are small non-coding RNAs that are involved in posttranscriptional regulation of their target genes in a sequence-specific manner. Emerging evidence demonstrates that mi RNAs are critical regulators of lipid synthesis, fatty acid oxidation and lipoprotein formation and secretion. Dysregulation of mi RNAs disrupts gene regulatory network, leading to metabolic syndrome and its related diseases. In this review, we introduced epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of mi RNAs expression. We emphasized on several representative mi RNAs that are functionally involved into lipid metabolism, including mi R-33/33 n, mi R122, mi R27a/b, mi R378/378 n, mi R-34 a and mi *** the function of mi RNAs in lipid homeostasis may provide potential therapeutic strategies for fatty liver disease.
