Prevailing dogma asserts th.t th. uplift of Tibet, th. onset of th. Asian monsoon system and h.gh.biodiversity in south.rn Asia are linked, and th.t all occurred after 23 million years ago in th. ***, spanning th. last 60 million years of Earth.h.story, th. geological, climatological and palaeontological evidence for th.s linkage is reviewed. Th. principal conclusions are th.t: 1) A proto-Tibetan h.gh.and existed well before th. Neogene and th.t an Andean type topograph. with.surface elevations of at least 4.5 km existed at th. start of th. Eocene, before final closure of th. Teth.s Ocean th.t separated India from Eurasia. 2) Th. h.malaya were formed not at th. start of th. India-Eurasia collision, but after much.of Tibet h.d ach.eved its present elevation. Th. h.malaya built against a pre-existing proto-Tibetan h.gh.and and only projected above th. average h.igh. of th. plateau after approximately 15 Ma. 3)Monsoon climates h.ve existed across south.rn Asia for th. wh.le of th. Cenozoic, and probably for a lot longer, but th.t th.y were of th. kind generated by seasonal migrations of th. Inter-tropical Convergence Zone. 4) Th. projection of th. h.gh.h.malaya above th. Tibetan Plateau at about 15 Ma coincides with.th. development of th. modern South.Asia Monsoon. 5) Th. East Asia monsoon became establish.d in its present form about th. same time as a consequence of topograph.c ch.nges in north.rn Tibet and elsewh.re in Asia, th. loss of moisture sources in th. Asian interior and th. development of a strong winter Siberian h.gh.as global temperatures declined. 6) New radiometric dates of palaeontological finds point to south.rn Asia's h.gh.biodiversity originating in th. Paleogene, not th. Neogene.

Several factors h.ve led to th. decline of electricity generation from coal over th. past decade, and projections forecast h.gh.rates of growth.for wind and solar tech.ologies in coming years. Th.s analysis uses h.urly generation data from large coal-fired power stations to determine h.w operations h.ve been modified in recent years and describes th. implications of th.se ch.nges for plant equipment and unit reliability. Th. data sh.ws increasing variability in intraday generation output th.t affects nearly all of th. units in th. sample, but th. magnitude of increase varies widely among plants. Outage patterns were examined as was th. relationsh.p between renewable energy growth.in a region and th. ch.nges in coal plant operations. Aggregate direct and indirect costs associated with.running coal plants as load-following units h.ve not yet been quantified in large-scale studies on a sector-wide basis, largely due to differences in h.w specific equipment responds to output fluctuations. Due to findings from th. h.urly generation data analysis and th. h.gh.degree of potential impact on coal plant equipment, th. study suggests th. development of a new modeling tool th.t will represent th. costs of running coal-fired power plants at lower capacity factors.

Background: Neonatal preauricular pit/sinus is a benign embryologic remnant of th. first or second branch.al arch.s. Th. estimated incidence in th. US is 1 to 9/1000 newborns, h.gh.r in East Asian babies. Most remain asymptomatic th.ough.ut life. Inflammatory complications include disch.rge of squamous debris, cellulitis, or frank abscess. Th. purpose of th.s study was to survey pediatric otolaryngologists in th. United States and Canada about management strategies for asymptomatic and symptomatic preauricular pits/sinuses. Study Design: A 15-item structured questionnaire covering questions on demograph.cs, professional experience, and medical and surgical management of congenital preauricular pits/sinuses were sent by e-mail and selectively by regular mail to 273 members of th. American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Results: 175 of 273 responses (64%) were evaluable. 85% of respondents would simply observe cases of asymptomatic preauricular pit/sinus. Regarding furth.r evaluation, 122 respondents (70%) would not recommend anyth.ng oth.r th.n routine neonatal h.aring screen, with.ut need for repeat h.aring tests in th. first two years of life;34 (19%) would also get BAER h.aring test and a renal ultrasound. If a sinus drains sebaceous material intermittently, 65% of th. surveyed pediatric otolaryngologists would recommend excision. Ninety nine percent of pediatric ENT respondents would excise a recurrently infected preauricular sinus. Conclusion: Watch.ul waiting, with.ut requirement of periodic h.aring tests in th. first 24 month. of life is certainly acceptable for management of neonatal asymptomatic preauricular pit/sinus. Th.re is universal agreement th.t recurrently infected preauricular sinuses sh.uld be referred to a pediatric otolaryngologist for surgical excision of th. fistulous tract.

A total of twelve field trials (6 with.kidney bean and 6 with.wh.te bean) were conducted over a th.ee-year period (2010 to 2012) at various locations in Ontario to evaluate th. tolerance of kidney and wh.te bean to imazeth.pyr applied preplant incorporated (PPI), preemergence (PRE), and postemergence (POST) at 37.5, 75 and 150 g·ai·h.-1. Imazeth.pyr applied PPI or PRE in kidney or wh.te bean caused 0%-1%, 0%-4%, and 0%-9% injury at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after application (WAA), respectively. h.wever, th. injury was transient and h.d no adverse effect on sh.ot dry weigh., h.igh., seed moisture content, and yield of kidney or wh.te bean except for sh.ot dry weigh. wh.ch.was reduced 32% with.imazeth.pyr applied PPI compared to th. weed free control in wh.te bean. Imazeth.pyr applied POST in kidney or wh.te bean caused as much.as 17%, 18%, and 11% injury at 1, 2, and 4 WAA, respectively. Th.re was no adverse effect on sh.ot dry weigh., h.igh., seed moisture content, and yield of kidney or wh.te bean except for imazeth.pyr applied POST wh.ch.increased seed moisture content 1.9% compared to th. weed free control in wh.te bean. Based on th.se results, th.re is an adequate margin of crop safety in dry bean to imazeth.pyr applied PPI or PRE at 37.5 or 75 g·ai·h.-1 in kidney and wh.te beans. h.wever, th.re is not an adequate margin of crop safety for imazeth.pyr applied POST at rates h.gh.r th.n 37.5 g·ai·h.-1 in kidney and wh.te bean.
