Driver sleepiness,fatigue,careless behavior and risk of motor vehicle crash and injury:Population based case and control study

Background： A few studies have been conducted to determine the relationship between road motor vehicle crashes （MVC） and serious injuries related to tiredness, fatigues and sleeping. Aim： To determine the effects of aggressive behaviour, driver sleepiness and fatigue on MVC and related injuries among Turkish population. Design and setting： Population-based case and control study conducted at the accident emergency departments of hospitals and roads. Subjects： 515 car drivers involved in crashes with injury were admitted to hospital and 1030 car drivers involved while driving on public roads as control group during the study period. Methods： The Manchester driver behaviour questionnaire （DBQ） measured the aberrant driving behaviours leading to accidents. Participants completed a fatigue severity scale （FSS） and Stanford Sleeping questionnaire an epworth scale with items related to socio-demographic information, driving experiences, adherence to traffic laws （such as speed limits and seat belt）, and drivers＇ driving records. Results： In a representative sampling, participant＇s age ranged from 25 to 65 and the mean and standard deviation were 36.5 _＋ 7.8 for cases and 37.0 4- 8.0 for controls. There was a significant difference in both group of drivers regarding BMI, level of education, marital status, driving experience, seat belt use, excessive speed limits, physical activity number of sleeping hours, mobile phone use, and cigarette smoking habit （p = 0.017）. Also, there was a significant higher mean score on all the DBQ violation questions among case group in comparison with the control group （p 〈 0.001）. Further, cases had higher prevalence of Epworth sleeping disorders （p 〈 0.001） and fatigue severity （p - 0.003） compared to control drivers. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that excessive speed, fatigue, lapses, errors, Stanford sleepiness score, violations, mobile phone use and Epworth sleepiness scale were significantly associated with injury involvemen

No study has been conducted to determine the relationship between RTC （road traffic crashes） and depression, anxiety and stress scale （DASS-21）, tiredness, fatigues and sleeping. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of aggressive driver behaviour, fatigue and sleeping on RTC comparison between commercial taxi and minibus/van/pick-up cars drivers. A cross-sectional study included a representative sample of 2,300 drivers of which 1,786 drivers （77.6%） agreed to participate. The Manchester DBQ （Driver Behaviour Questionnaire） was used to measure the aberrant driving behaviours leading to accidents. The study is based on the measurement using the depression anxiety stress scales （DASS-21）. Participants completed a DASS-21 questionnaire with items related to socio-demographic information, BMI （body mass index）, driving experience, fatigue, sleeping, adherence to traffic laws （including speed limits and wearing seat belt）, and drivers＇ driving records. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed. In a representative sampling, the age distribution of the participants ranged from 25 to 65 years with the mean age 38.3±10.2 and the mean annual mileage （km） per month was 14,587±1,741 （p 〈 0.001）. There was a significant difference found between both group minibus/van/pick-up and commercial taxi drivers regarding of their age group （p 〈 0.001）, education （p = 0.003）, history of accident （p = 0.003）, seat belt use （p = 0.022） time of accident （p = 0.005）; crossing red light （p 〈 0.001）, excessive speed limits （p = 0.002）, BMI group （p = 0.022）, physical activity （p = 0.003）, annual mileage in km （p 〈 0.001）, number of working days （p = 0.010） and hours （p = 0.030）; number of sleeping hours （p = 0.025）, CD music listening （p = 0.010）, mobile phone use （p = 0.001）, soft drinking （p = 0.002） and cigarette smoking habit （p 〈 0.001）. Effect of size on biaxial flexural strength for cement-based materials by using a triangular plate method

The effect of size on the biaxial flexural strength(BFS)of Portland cement mortar was investigated by using the recently proposed triangular plate method(TPM).An experimental program was conceived to study the size effect by keeping a constant water-cement ratio of 0.485,cement-sand ratio of 1:2.75,and using unreinforced triangular mortar plates of five different thicknesses and seven different side *** BFS of the produced specimens was tested,and variations of BFS depending on specimen thickness and side length were *** results indicated that increases in triangular plate specimen side length and specimen thickness led to a decrease in the BFS of Portland cement *** effect of specimen length increase on BFS was more significant than on the effect of the specimen *** variations in specimens’thickness indicated a deterministic Type I size effect,while the variations in specimens’length showed an energetic-statistical Type I size effect.

Destructive effect of magnesium and calcium atoms on TEX

The interaction of TEX(an explosive recently attracts attention) with Mg and Ca atom(s) has been investigated within the limitations of density functional theory at the level of B3 LYP/6-311 ++G(d,p). The effect of Mg in 1:1 mol ratio is very drastic on TEX and one of the NO_2 moieties is expelled as preform of nitrite ion. The second Mg atom in the composite(1:2 mol ratio of TEX:Mg) shows balancing effect of the first Mg atom, thus no bond cleavage occurs but some distortions happen. As for the effect of calcium, in1:1 and 1:2(TEX:Ca) ratios nitramine bond cleavage(s) occur(s) drastically. Some structural and quantum chemical data are presented.

An experimental investigation of properties of polyethylene reinforced with Al powders

Mechanical and physical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, Shore D hardness, melt flow rate (MFR), and electrical and thermal conductivities of composites with high density polyethylene matrix reinforced with Al powders were investigated experimentally. Measurements of the mechanical and physical properties were performed up to a reinforcing component concentration of 30% volume Al powder and compared with mathematical models from the literature. The obtained results have shown that experimental data were in good agreement with theoretical data. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation at break decreased with increasing Al powder content, which was attributed to the intro-duction of discontinuities in the polymer structure, and modulus of elasticity increased with increasing Al content. The composite preparation conditions allowed the formation of a random distribution of metallic particles in the polymer matrix volume for system high density polyethylene-Al (HDPE-Al). There was a cluster formation of Al particles at higher Al contents in the polymer matrix. Electrical and thermal conductivity values of HDPE-Al composites were higher than pure HDPE values.

The expression of "wall vegetation" is a new term for the current *** the researchers have not given enough explanation about *** is "wall vegetation"?Where can we observe wall-vegetation in nature?What are the characteristic species as "wall-vegetation"?We think that the clarification of this point will significantly improve the benefit of this study.

In vitro antibacterial and antitumor activities of some medicinal plant extracts, growing in Turkey

Objective: To investigate antibacterial and antitumor activities of 51 different extracts prepared with 3 types of solvents (water, ethanol and methanol) of 16 different plant species (Ajuga reptans (A. reptans) L., Phlomis pungens (P. pungens) Willd., Marrubium astracanicum (M. astracanicum) Jacq., Nepeta nuda (N. nuda) L., Stachys annua (S. annua) L., Genista lydia (G. lydia) Boiss., Nuphar lutea (N. lutea) L., Nymphaea alba (N. alba) L., Vinca minor (V. minor) L., Stellaria media (S. media) L., Capsella bursa-pastoris (C. bursa-pastoris) L., Galium spurium (G. spurium) L., Onosma heterophyllum (O. heterophyllum) Griseb., Reseda luteola (R. luteola) L., Viburnum lantana (V. lantana) L. and Mercurialis annua (M. annua) L.) grown in Turkey was conducted. Methods: Antibacterial activity was evaluated with 10 bacteria including Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), Escheria coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium), Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens), Proteus vulgaris (P. vulgaris), Enterobacter cloacae (E. cloacea), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) by using disc diffusion method. Antitumor activity was evaluated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens (A. tumefaciens)-induced potato disc tumor assay. Results: Best antibacterial activity was obtained with ethanolic extract of P. pungens against S. pyogenes . Ethanolic and methanolic extract of N. alba and ethanolic extract of G. lydia also showed strong antibacterial activities. Results indicated that alcoholic extracts especially ethanolic extracts exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Best antitumor activity was obtained with methanolic extracts of N. alba and V. lantana (100% tumor inhibition). Aim: Erectile dysfunction may be observed in up to 80% of patients with Peyronie's disease. An objective evaluation of the erectile function is attempted to work out in patients with Peyronie's disease. Methods: Penile deformity, sexual function and penile vascular status were analyzed in 123 patients with Peyronie's disease, who had not received any pertinent treatment. Results: Penile deformity, palpable plaque and pain on erection were seen in 112 (91%), 97(78.8%) and 27 (21.9%) of the 123 patients, respectively. Of the 76 patients evaluated by color Doppler ultrasounography, veno-occlusive dysfunction as the vascular component for erectile dysfunction was found in 17 (22.3%), arterial insufficiency in 10(13.1%) and a mixed picture in 23 (30.2%). Conclusion: The documentation of penile erectile function and the determination of the vascular status using color Doppler ultrasonography can guide the appropriate therapeutic choice.

Potential effects of ultraviolet-C radiation on the mole rats (<i>Spalax leucodon</i>) hematological values

In this study, the effect of ultraviolet-C (UVC) radiation on hematologic parameters of mole rats (Spalax leucodon) was studied. Ten mole rats of both sexes, weighing 150-200 g, were used. The rats were exposed to 8 hours daily UVC radiation for 45 days. Before the radiation exposure (as a control) and on day 7, 14, 30 and 45, blood specimens were obtained from the experimental groups. Then blood samples were analyzed and compared to the control groups. A significant decrease or increase of hematological parameters was observed in some experimental groups in terms of the control groups of values (p p > 0.05). These results showed that the UVC radiation has sig-nificant effects on some hematological parameters of mole rats according to the radiation exposure time and a dose.
