Glycans,either alone or in complex with glycan-binding proteins,are essential structures that can regulate cell biology by mediating protein stability or receptor dimerization under physiological and pathological conditions.Certain glycans are ligands for lectins,which are carbohydrate-specific receptors.Bone is a complex tissue that provides mechanical support for muscles and joints,and the regulation of bone mass in mammals is governed by complex interplay between bone-forming cells,called osteoblasts,and bone-resorbing cells,called osteoclasts.Bone erosion occurs when bone resorption notably exceeds bone formation.Osteoclasts may be activated during cancer,leading to a range of symptoms,including bone pain,fracture,and spinal cord compression.Our understanding of the role of protein glycosylation in cells and tissues involved in osteoclastogenesis suggests that glycosylation-based treatments can be used in the management of diseases.The aims of this review are to clarify the process of bone resorption and investigate the signaling pathways mediated by glycosylation and their roles in osteoclast biology.Moreover,we aim to outline how the lessons learned about these approaches are paving the way for future glycobiology-focused therapeutics.

Although logistic regression is the most popular for modelling regression relationships with binary responses,many find relative risk(RR),or risk ratio,easier to interpret and prefer to use this measure of risk in regression analysis.Indeed,since Zou published his modified Poisson regression approach for modelling RR for cross-sectional data,his paper has been cited over 7000 times,demonstrating the popularity of this alternative measure of risk in regression analysis involving binary responses.As longitudinal studies have become increasingly popular in clinical trials and observational studies,it is imperative to extend Zou’s approach for longitudinal data.The two most popular approaches for longitudinal data analysis are the generalised linear mixed-effects model(GLMM)and generalised estimating equations(GEE).However,the parametric GLMM cannot be used for the extension within the current context,because Zou’s approach treats the binary response as a Poisson variable,which is at odds with the Bernoulli distribution for the binary response.On the other hand,as it imposes no mathematical model on data distributions,the semiparametric GEE is coherent with Zou’s modified Poisson regression.In this paper,we develop a GEE-based longitudinal model for binary responses to provide inference about RR.

On the base of controllable variable stiffness property,variable stiffness composites were the main components of functional materials in aerospace.However,the relatively low mechanical strength,stiffness range,and response rate restricted the application of variable stiffness composite.In this work,the novel variable stiffness composite system with characteristics of repeatable high load bearing and response rate was successfully prepared via the double-layer anisotropic structure to solve the bottlenecks of variable stiffness composites.The novel variable stiffness composite systems were composed of variable stiffness layer of polycaprolactone(PCL)and the driven layer of silicone elastomer with alcohol,which continuously changed Young’s modulus from 0.1 to 7.263 MPa(72.63 times variation)in 200 s and maintained maximum weight of 11.52 times its own weight(8.5 g).Attributed to the relatively high variable stiffness range and load bearing value of variable stiffness composite system,the repeatable response process led to the efficient high load driven as“muscle”and diversified precise grab of objects with different shapes as“gripper”,owning widespread application prospects in the field of bionics.

BACKGROUND Ingestion of foreign bodies results in gastrointestinal perforation in approximately 1% of patients,and fish bones are the objects that most commonly lead to bowel perforation. When it does occur,the terminal ileum is the most common site of perforation,followed by the duodenal C-loop. However,involvement of the pancreas is very rare. Because clinical symptoms are nonspecific and gastrointestinal perforation may present as only odynophagia or abdominal pain,a definite preoperative diagnosis and clinical intervention may be delayed.CASE SUMMARY We report the case of a 32-year-old man who presented to our hospital because of abdominal pain that had worsened over 5 d. He had no significant past history except that he had eaten fish 1 wk previously. Upper endoscopy revealed an irregular submucosal tumor on the front wall of the gastric antrum. Endoscopic ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a fish bone penetrating the gastric antrum and migratingin to the neck of the pancreas. The patient underwent laparoscopic surgery and had no complications one week after the operation.CONCLUSION A recent history of foreign body ingestion and imaging examinations are helpful for diagnosis of unexplained abdominal pain caused by foreign bodies.

Imbibition mechanisms of high temperature resistant microemulsion system in ultra-low permeability and tight reservoirs

Lower-phase microemulsions with core-shell structure were prepared by microemulsion dilution method.The high temperature resistant systems were screened and the performance evaluation experiments were conducted to clarify the spontaneous imbibition mechanisms in ultra-low permeability and tight oil reservoirs,and to direct the field microfracture huff and puff test of oil well.The microemulsion system(O-ME)with cationic-nonionic surfactant as hydrophilic shell,No.3 white oil as oil phase core has the highest imbibition recovery;its spontaneous imbibition mechanisms include:the ultra-low interfacial tension and wettability reversal significantly reduce oil adhesion work to improve oil displacement efficiency,the nanoscale“core-shell structure”formed can easily enter micro-nano pores and throats to expand the swept volume,in addition,the remarkable effect of dispersing and solubilizing crude oil can improve the mobility of crude oil.Based on the experimental results,a microfracture huff and puff test of O-ME was carried out in Well YBD43-X506 of Shengli Oilfield.After being treated,the well had a significant increase of daily fluid production to 5 tons from 1.4 tons,and an increase of daily oil production to 2.7 tons from 1.0 ton before treatment.

Kinetics of hot metal desulfurization were studied using CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-TiO2 slag in the range of 1400-1500℃on a laboratory scale.The results of kinetic experiments indicate that the desulfurization rate increases as the temperature,Al2O3 content,Na2O content,and TiO2 content increase and basicity increases from 1.01 to 1.75,but decreases when basicity increases from 1.75 to 2.02.The melting effect of slag is promoted as the temperature,Na2O content,and TiO2 content increase and Al2O3 content increases from 12.13 to 17.17 mass%,but worsened as basicity increases and Al2O3 content increases from 17.17 to 22.27 mass%.A kinetic model of hot metal desulfurization has been developed to calculate the mass transfer coefficient and the mass transfer resistance of sulfur in slag.The mass transfer coefficient of sulfur increases as the temperature,Al2O3 content,Na2O content,and TiO2 content increase and basicity decreases.Total mass transfer coefficients of sulfur were in the range of(5.02-23.78)×10^-7 m s^-1.The activation energy was estimated to be 464.06 kJ mo1^-1 at the temperature from 1400 to 1450℃and 176.35 kJ mol-1 at the temperature from 1450 to 1500℃.The sulfur distribution at the slag-metal interface was observed using a mineral liberation analyzer.The result shows that the mass transfer of sulfur in slag is the controlling step at high temperature during the desulfurization process.

Numerical simulation of radiated noise during combustion of energetic materials in a closed bomb

In this study,based on a closed bomb test combined with computational fluid dynamics,a structural finite element method,and an acoustic boundary element method,a fluid-solid acoustic one-way coupling calculation model is established for the combustion process of energetic materials in a closed bomb,and the effectiveness of the model is verified by experiments.It is found that the maximum peak sound pressure increases exponentially with an increase in loading doses or gas pressure.However,a change in the combustion coefficient of the energetic materials has little effect on the noise generated during the combustion process in the closed bomb.When the combustion coefficient is reduced by a multiple of 16,the maximum transient sound pressure is reduced by 1.79 dB,and the sound pressure level in the frequency band is reduced by 1.75 dB.With an increase in shell thickness,the combustion noise of the energetic materials in the closed bomb decreases,and the reduction range of the combustion noise increases with the increase in shell thickness.

Dynamic behavior of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway embankment in permafrost regions under trained-induced vertical loads

The unfrozen water content and ice content of frozen soil change continuously with varying temperatures,resulting in the temperature dependence of mechanical properties of frozen soil.Thus the dynamic behavior of embankment in permafrost regions under train loading also alters with seasons.Based on a series of strong-motion tests that were carried out on the traditional embankment of Qinghai-Tibet Railway(QTR)in permafrost regions,the acceleration waveforms recorded at the embankment shoulder and slope toes were obtained.Testing results show an obvious attenuation effect on the vertical train loading from road shoulder to slope toes.Furthermore,numerical simulations of a traditional embankment under vertical train loading in different seasons were conducted,and the dynamic behavior of the embankment was described.The results show that the vibration attenuation in the cold season is greater than that in the warm season.The maximum acceleration of vibration drops to about 5%when the train vibration load is transferred through the embankment into the permafrost,and the high-frequency components are absorbed when the vibration transmits downward.Moreover,the dynamic stress under the dynamic train loading decreases exponentially with an increasing depth in different seasons.The results can be a reference for design and maintenance of embankments in permafrost regions.

Shell-boring species Polydora brevipalpa Zachs, 1933 is redescribed based on morphological observations and molecular approach for future unambiguous identification. Genetic distance analyses showed that the interspecific polydorid variation (16.7%–25.6%) was at least 15 times higher than the intraspecific one (0.2%–0.9%) based on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1) gene sequences of polydorids. However, 18S rDNA variation pattern demonstrated a rather narrow barcoding gap, with the interspecific polydorid variation (0.5%–5.6%) being very close to the intraspecific one (0.0%–0.4%). As such, the CO1 gene exhibited better DNA barcode for identification of polydorids than the 18S rDNA gene because of the sufficiently large barcoding gaps. Analysis of molecular variance results based on CO1 gene sequences showed that most variations in sequences (97.79%) lay within groups of adult worms and egg capsules rather than between them. This indicated that egg capsules from Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793) in Ningbo and Nantong were related to the adult worms from Patinopecten yessoensis (Jay, 1857) in Dalian, and both of them belonged to P . brevipalpa . This result was further supported by parsimony network analysis, which showed that egg capsules collected from diff erent localities and adult worms shared a single haplotype. This study was the first to report both P . brevipalpa infestation on C . gigas and to utilise the known CO1 sequences of the adult polydorids to validate morphologically unidentified egg capsules or early larvae. P . brevipalpa was most possibly brought to Chinese waters through transportation of Pa . yessoensis brood stock from Japan.
