Optimization of chemistry and process parameters for control of intermetallic formation in Mg sludges

Intermetallic formation in sludge during magnesium(Mg)melting,holding and high pressure die casting practices is a very important ***,very often it is overlooked by academia,original equipment manufacturers(OEM),metal ingot producers and even die *** aim of this study was to minimize the intermetallic formation in Mg sludge via the optimization of the chemistry and process *** Al8Mn5 intermetallic particles were identified by the microstructure analysis based on the Al and Mn *** design of experiment(doe)technique,Taguchi method,was employed to minimize the intermetallic formation in the sludge of Mg alloys with various chemical compositions of Al,Mn,Fe,and different process parameters,holding temperature and holding *** sludge yield(SY)and intermetallic size(IS)was selected as two *** optimum combination of the levels in terms of minimizing the intermetallic formation were 9 wt.%Al,0.15 wt.%Mn,0.001 wt.%(10 ppm)Fe,690℃ for the holding temperature and holding at 30 mins for the holding time,*** best combination for smallest intermetallic size were 9 wt.%Al,0.15 wt.%Mn,0.001 wt.%(10 ppm)Fe,630℃ for the holding temperature and holding at 60 mins for the holding time,*** groups of sludge factors,Chemical Sludge(CSF),physical Sludge(pSF)and Comprehensive Sludge Factors(and CpSF)were established for prediction of sludge yields and intermetallic sizes in Al-containing Mg *** CpSF with five independent variables including both chemical elements and process parameters gave high accuracy in prediction,as the prediction of the pSF with only the two processing parameters of the melt holding temperature and time showed a relatively large deviation from the experimental *** Chemical Sludge Factor was primarily designed for small ingot producers and die casters with a limited melting and holding capacity,of which process parameters could be fixed *** physical Sludge Factor could be used f

Fluctuating hydrodynamic methods for fluid-structure interactions in confined channel geometries

We develop computational teractions subject to thermal fluctuations geometry. The methods take into account methods for the study of fluid-structure in- when confined within channels with slit-like the hydrodynamic coupling and diffusivity of microstructures when influenced by their proximity to no-slip walls. We develop stochas- tic numerical methods subject to no-slip boundary conditions using a staggered finite volume discretization. We introduce techniques for discretizing stochastic systems in a manner that ensures results consistent with statistical mechanics. We show how an exact fluctuation-dissipation condition can be used for this purpose to discretize the stochastic driving fields and combined with an exact projection method to enforce incompressibil- ity. We demonstrate our computational methods by investigating how the proximity of ellipsoidal colloids to the channel wall affects their active hydrodynamic responses and passive diffusivity. We also study for a large number of interacting particles collective drift-diffusion dynamics and associated correlation h/actions. We expect the introduced stochastic computational methods to be broadly applicable to applications in which con- finement effects play an important role in the dynamics of microstructures subject to hydrodynamic coupling and thermal fluctuations.

It has recently been demonstrated experimentally that a turbulent plasma created by the collision of two inhomogeneous,asymmetric,weakly magnetized,laser-produced plasma jets can generate strong stochastic magnetic fields via the small-scale turbulent dynamo mechanism,provided the magnetic Reynolds number of the plasma is sufficiently *** this paper,we compare such a plasma with one arising from two pre-magnetized plasma jets whose creation is identical save for the addition of a strong external magnetic field imposed by a pulsed magnetic field *** investigate the differences between the two turbulent systems using a Thomson-scattering diagnostic,x-ray selfemission imaging,and proton *** Thomson-scattering spectra and x-ray images suggest that the external magnetic field has a limited effect on the plasma dynamics in the *** the external magnetic field induces collimation of the flows in the colliding plasma jets and although the initial strengths of the magnetic fields arising from the interaction between the colliding jets are significantly larger as a result of the external field,the energies and morphologies of the stochastic magnetic fields post-amplification are *** conclude that,for turbulent laser-plasmas with supercritical magnetic Reynolds numbers,the dynamo-amplified magnetic fields are determined by the turbulent dynamics rather than the seed fields or modest changes in the initial flow dynamics of the plasma,a finding consistent with theoretical expectations and simulations of turbulent dynamos.

Numerical prediction of turbulent mixing can be divided into two subproblems: to predict the geometrical extent of a mixing region and to predict the mixing properties on an atomic or molecular scale, within the mixing region. The former goal suffices for some purposes, while important problems of chemical reactions(e.g. flames) and nuclear reactions depend critically on the second goal in addition to the first one. here we review recent progress in establishing a conceptual reformulation of convergence, and we illustrate these concepts with a review of recent numerical studies addressing turbulence and mixing in the high Reynolds number limit. We review significant progress on the first goal, regarding the mixing region, and initial progress on the second goal, regarding atomic level mixing properties. New results concerning non-uniqueness of the infinite Reynolds number solutions and other consequences of a renormalization group point of view, to be published in detail elsewhere, are summarized *** notion of stochastic convergence(of probability measures and probability distribution functions) replaces traditional pointwise convergence. The primary benefit of this idea is its increased stability relative to the statistical "noise" which characterizes turbulent flow. Our results also show that this modification of convergence, with sufficient mesh refinement, may not be needed. however, in practice, mesh refinement is seldom sufficient and the stochastic convergence concepts have a *** to this circle of ideas is the observation that turbulent mixing, in the limit of high Reynolds number, appears to be non-unique. Identification of a decedent in a 103-year-old homicide case using forensic anthropology and genetic genealogy

Anthropologists are often the custodians of long-term unidentified human remains though their positions as curators of university or museum skeletal *** factors decrease the solvability of these legacy cases including the passage of time,the loss of provenience for specific cases,and lack of documentation or case *** anthropologists can contribute important information toward identification,it is often necessary to explore novel and cross-disciplinary strategies to resolve difficult cold *** long cold cases,the postmortem interval,in particular,may be difficult to estimate leading to further challenges in achieving *** advances in radiocarbon bomb pulse dating,isotope analysis,and actualistic studies have contributed to positive identification of unidentified human remains in some legacy cases,but may not be available to all forensic practitioners and law enforcement from resource-poor *** resources,as well as collaborating with professionals outside of forensic anthropology,is a useful strategy to pursue when anthropological methods are *** case study presented here demonstrates a collaborative approach between forensic anthropologists,forensic genetic genealogists,and law enforcement in a century-old *** dismembered and mummified parts of a male body were recovered in a remote cave in 1979 and again in *** forensic anthropologists creating and updating the biological profile over the decades from recovery to present,no identification was made until the application of forensic genetic genealogy(FGG)to the case in *** interpretations of bone microstructure and trauma analysis are presented for the case,alongside the historical documentation and“proof of life”evidence used by the genealogy team.A review of the FGG methods underscores the challenges in this case(*** endogamy,multiple aliases used by the victim)and the steps taken toward ***,a co

Effects of temperature on the tribological behavior of Al0.25CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy

The tribological behavior of Al0.25 CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy(hEA) sliding against Si3N4 ball was investigated from room temperature to 600°. The microstructure of the alloys was characterized by simple FCC phase with 260 hV. Below 300°, with increasing temperature, the wear rate increased due to high temperature softening. The wear rate remained stabilized above 300°due to the anti-wear effect of the oxidation film on the contact interface. The dominant wear mechanism of hEA changed from abrasive wear at room temperature to delamination wear at 200°, then delamination wear and oxidative wear at 300°and became oxidative above 300°. Moreover, the adhesive wear existed concomitantly below 300°.
