Background:Shunt systems are used to provide cerebrospinal fluid drainage in the treatment of ***,antibiotic-impregnated shunt systems are used to prevent colonization in the ventriculoperitoneal ***-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)is the most common causative microorganism of shunt *** aim of the study is to investigate effects of several substances on MRSA biofilms in the ventriculoperitoneal ***:The present study consists of mainly eight groups(each has two subgroups as antibiotic-impregnated and nonantibiotic-impregnated catheters).In addition,each group contains six molds using MRSA *** this study,daptomycin(DAPT)(2 mg/ml),vancomycin(VAN)(10 mg/ml),linezolid(LIN)(2 mg/ml),N-acetylcysteine(NAC)(6 mg/ml),and various combinations of these substances were used to evaluate the treatment against MRSA using scanning electron microscope(SEM)images and microbiological ***:The colony count in the antibiotic-impregnated samples significantly decreased compared to nonantibiotic-impregnated samples in the MRSA,MRSA+DAPT,and MRSA+LIN groups(p<0.01),***,the colony count in antibiotic-impregnated samples significantly increased compared to nonantibiotic-impregnated samples in NAC+DAPT and NAC+VAN groups(p<0.01),***:The results showed that the use of antibiotic-impregnated catheters has a significant impact on the prevention of infection whereas the combination of NAC and DAPT showed better antibiofilm and antibacterial effects than other combinations on the prevention and treatment of nonantibiotic-impregnated catheter infections.

Corrosion Behavior ofAg-doped TiO2 Coatings on Commercially Pure Tita- nium in Simulated Body Fluid Solution

TiO2 films including different amounts of Ag obtained by sol-gel method on commercially pure titanium （CP-Ti） and the corrosion properties of Ag-doped TiO2 films were investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation and Electrochemical ImpedanceSpectroscopy （EIS） tests in Simulated Body Fluid （SBF） solution. The results were compared with untreated and un-doped samples. Surface characterizations before and after the corrosion tests were performed by the Scanning Electron Microscopy （SEM） and X-ray Diffraction （XRD） analysis. It was observed that Ag-doping for TiO2 films improved the corrosion resistance when compared with untreated and un-doped TiO2 film coated samples. The highest corrosion resistance was obtained from Ag-doped samples coated with a solution of 0.05 M Ag.

Thermodynamics of Stability Constant of Binary Complex of Nicotinamide with Mn^(++)

The stability constants of the binary complexes of Mn2+ with nicotinamide (NA) were determined from potentiometric pH titrations data at 15.0 , 25.0 and 35.0oC and I = 0.1,0.2,0.4 mol L-1 (NaClO4). The formation of binary 1:1 , 1:2 NA-Mn complexes at three different temperatures and the influence of three different ionic strength on their stability were reported. The thermodynamic parameters (DGof, DSof, DHof) for the complex formation reaction were estimated from stability constant at different temperatures.

Selective Laser Melting(SLM),one of the metal additive manufacturing methods in the powder bed,is frequently used in the production of 316L stainless steel *** this study,the effect of duplex surface modification(metal additive manufacturing and plasma oxidizing)on the corrosion resistance of 316L was ***6Al4V layer was formed by additive manufacturing on 316L produced by selective laser melting *** obtained layered Ti6Al4V/316L samples were oxidized by plasma at 650℃–750℃ and 1 h–4 h parameter ***_(2)ceramic layer was formed on the Ti6Al4V/316L structure by plasma oxidation process in several layer *** properties of the TiO_(2)layer were determined by Open Circuit Potential(OCP),potentiodynamic polarization,and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS)tests in Simulated Body Fluid(SBF)***,the surface characterizations of the samples were determined by the Vickers micro-hardness tester,Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),and X-Ray Diffractometer(XRD)*** the results,it was obtained that the corrosion resistance of the plasma oxidized was higher than the untreated 316L and layered Ti6Al4V/316L *** best corrosion resistance was obtained under the 750℃ and 4 h parameter conditions because of the increasing plasma oxidizing time and temperature.

Toward a better understanding of microbiologically influenced corrosion caused by sulfate reducing bacteria

Sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB) are often the culprits of microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) in anoxic environments because sulfate is a ubiquitous oxidant. MIC of carbon steel caused by SRB is the most intensively investigated topic in MIC because of its practical importance. It is also because biogenic sulfides complicate mechanistic SRB MIC studies, making SRB MIC of carbon steel is a long-lasting topic that has generated considerable confusions. It is expedient to think that biogenic H_2S secreted by SRB acidifies the broth because it is an acid gas. However, this is not true because endogenous H_2S gets its H^+ from organic carbon oxidation and the fluid itself in the first place rather than an external source. Many people believe that biogenic H_2S is responsible for SRB MIC of carbon steel. However, in recent years,well designed mechanistic studies provided evidence that contradicts this misconception. Experimental data have shown that cathodic electron harvest by an SRB biofilm from elemental iron via extracellular electron transfer(EET) for energy production by SRB is the primary cause. It has been demonstrated that when a mature SRB biofilm is subjected to carbon source starvation, it switches to elemental iron as an electron source and becomes more corrosive. It is anticipated that manipulations of EET related genes will provide genetic-level evidence to support the biocathode theory in the future. This kind of new advances will likely lead to new gene probes or transcriptomics tools for detecting corrosive SRB strains that possess high EET capabilities.

Interobserver variation in histopathological assessment of Helicobacter pylori gastritis

AIM:Because the presence or absence of H pylori infection has important implications for therapeutic decisions based on histological assessment,the reproducibility of Sydney system is *** study was designed to test the reproducibility of features of Helicobacter pylori gastritis, using the updated Sydney classification. METHODS:Gastric biopsies of 40 randomly selected cases of H pylori gastritis were scored semiquantitatively by three *** analysed induded chronic inflammation, inflammatory activity,atrophy,intestinal metaplasia,H pylori, surface epithelial damage.κ values below 0.5 represented poor,those between 0.5 and 0.75 good and values over 0.75 excellent interobserver agreement. RESULTS:The best interobserver agreement(κ=0.62)was present for intestinal *** agreement was the poorest for evaluating atrophy(κ=0.31). CONCLUSION:Although the results of this study were in accordance with some previous studies,an excellent agreement could not be reached for any features of H pylori *** low degree of concordance is assumed to be due to the personal evaluation differences in grading the features,the lack of standardized diagnostic criteria,and the ignorance to reach a consensus about the methods to be used in grading the features of H pylori gastritis before initiating the study.
