Aging is a significant risk factor for various diseases,including asthma,and it often leads to poorer clinical outcomes,particularly in elderly individuals.It is recognized that age-related diseases are due to a time-dependent accumulation of cellular damage,resulting in a progressive decline in cellular and physiological functions and an increased susceptibility to chronic diseases.The effects of aging affect not only the elderly but also those of younger ages,posing significant challenges to global healthcare.Thus,understanding the molecular mechanisms associated with aging in different diseases is essential.One intriguing factor is the aryl hydrocarbon receptor(AhR),which serves as a cytoplasmic receptor and ligand-activated transcription factor and has been linked to the aging process.Here,we review the literature on several major hallmarks of aging,including mitochondrial dysfunction,cellular senescence,autophagy,mitophagy,epigenetic alterations,and microbiome disturbances.Moreover,we provide an overview of the impact of AhR on these hallmarks by mediating responses to environmental exposures,particularly in relation to the immune system.Furthermore,we explore how aging hallmarks affect clinical characteristics,inflammatory features,exacerbations,and the treatment of asthma.It is suggested that AhR signaling may potentially play a role in regulating asthma phenotypes in elderly populations as part of the aging process.

Localization for mixed near-field and far-field sources under impulsive noise

In order to solve the problem that the performance of traditional localization methods for mixed near-field sources(NFSs)and far-field sources(FFSs)degrades under impulsive noise,a robust and novel localization method is proposed.After eliminating the impacts of impulsive noise by the weighted out-lier filter,the direction of arrivals(DOAs)of FFSs can be estimated by multiple signal classification(MUSIC)spectral peaks search.Based on the DOAs information of FFSs,the separation of mixed sources can be performed.Finally,the estimation of localizing parameters of NFSs can avoid two-dimension spectral peaks search by decomposing steering vectors.The Cramer-Rao bounds(CRB)for the unbiased estimations of DOA and range under impulsive noise have been drawn.Simulation experiments verify that the proposed method has advantages in probability of successful estimation(PSE)and root mean square error(RMSE)compared with existing localization methods.It can be concluded that the proposed method is effective and reliable in the environment with low generalized signal to noise ratio(GSNR),few snapshots,and strong impulse.

Rational design of hydroxytricyanopyrrole-based probes with high affinity and rapid visualization for amyloid-β aggregates in vitro and in vivo

As key biomarkers,amyloid-β(Aβ)plaques are frequently used to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Although fluorescence imaging has proven to be effective in detecting these plaques,the gold standard probe thioflavin T(ThT),used for Aβaggregates,cannot be applied in vivo owing to its invasive nature.Therefore,the development of novel fluorescent probes capable of identifying Aβplaques in situ is necessary.Based on the ThT structure,twoπ-conjugated heterocyclic D-π-A probes were designed bearing the hydroxytricyanopyrrole acceptor and N,N-dimethylaminophenyl donor.These probes exhibited red to near-infrared fluorescence emission(λ_(max)=732 nm),large Stokes shifts(>100 nm),exceptional signal-to-noise ratio,rapid response(tu imaging of Aβplaques in AD mouse models.Furthermore,in vivo research demonstrated that NT-HTCP could cross the blood-brain barrier and continue imaging the Aβplaques with a good signal-to-noise ratio.Additionally,the outcomes of the docking computations helped guide the development of the Aβprobes.This study expands the family of N,N-dimethylaminophenyl-based Aβ-sensitive fluorophores,with NTHTCP emerging as a highly promising imaging agent.

Preparation of PrFe_(x)Co_(1-x)O_(3)/Mt catalyst and study on degradation of 2-hydroxybenzoic acid wastewater by catalytic wet peroxide oxidation

In this study,the perovskite nanocomposite PrFe_(x)Co_(1-x)O_(3)(Pr(S))was successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method;PrFe_(x)Co_(1-x)O_(3)/Al-pillared montmorillonite(Pr(S)/Mt)catalysts were prepared by impregnation(D)method and solid-melting(G)method,respectively,with Pr(S)as the active component and Al-pillared montmorillonite as the carrier.The catalysts were applied to treat the 2-hydroxybenzoic acid(2-HA)-simulated wastewater by catalytic wet peroxide oxidation(CWPO)technique,and the chemical oxygen demand(COD)removal rate and the 2-HA degradation rate were used as indicators to evaluate the catalytic performance.The results of the experiment indicated that the solid-melting method was more conducive to preparing the catalyst when the Co/Fe molar ratio of 7:3 and the optimal structural properties of the catalysts were achieved.The influence of operating parameters,including reaction temperature,catalyst dosage,H_(2)O_(2)dosage,pH,and initial 2-HA concentration,were optimized for the degradation of 2-HA by CWPO.The results showed that 97.64%of 2-HA degradation and 75.23%of COD removal rate were achieved under more suitable experimental conditions.In addition,after the catalyst was used five times,the degradation rate of 2-HA could still reach 76.93%,which implied the high stability and reusability of the catalyst.The high catalytic activity of the catalyst was due to the doping of Co into PrFeO_(3),which could promote the generation of HO·,and the high stability could be attributed to the loading of Pr(S)onto Al-Mt,which reduced the leaching of reactive metals.The study of reaction mechanism and kinetics showed that the whole degradation process conformed to the pseudo-firstorder kinetic equation,and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood method was applied to demonstrate that catalysis was dominant in the degradation process.

Bilayer borophene:an efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction is a crucial technique for green hydrogen production.However,finding affordable,stable,and efficient catalyst materials to replace noble metal catalysts remains a significant challenge.Recent experimental breakthroughs in the synthesis of two-dimensional bilayer borophene provide a theoretical framework for exploring their physical and chemical properties.In this study,we systematically considered nine types of bilayer borophenes as potential electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction.Our first-principles calculations revealed that bilayer borophenes exhibit high stability and excellent conductivity,possessing a relatively large specific surface area with abundant active sites.Both surface boron atoms and the bridge sites between two boron atoms can serve as active sites,displaying high activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction.Notably,the Gibbs free energy change associated with adsorption for these bilayer borophenes can reach as low as−0.002 eV,and the Tafel reaction energy barriers are lower(0.70 eV)than those on Pt.Moreover,the hydrogen evolution reaction activity of these two-dimensional bilayer borophenes can be described by engineering their work function.Additionally,we considered the effect of pH on hydrogen evolution reaction activity,with significant activity observed in an acidic environment.These theoretical results reveal the excellent catalytic performance of two-dimensional bilayer borophenes and provide crucial guidance for the experimental exploration of multilayer boron for various energy applications.

Assessing individual risks of healthy aging using biomarkers and identifying associated factors have become important areas of research.In this study,we conducted a literature review of relevant publications between 2018 and 2023 in both Chinese and English databases.Previous studies have predominantly used single biomarkers,such as C-reactive protein,or focused on specific life course stages and factors such as socioeconomic status,mental health,educational levels,and unhealthy lifestyles.By summarizing the progress in this field,our study provides valuable insights and future directions for promoting healthy aging from a life course perspective.

Xuebijing improves intestinal microcirculation dysfunction in septic rats by regulating the VEGF-A/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway

BACKGROUND:This study aims to explore whether Xuebijing(XBJ) can improve intestinal microcirculation dysfunction in sepsis and its mechanism.METHODS:A rat model of sepsis was established by cecal ligation and puncture(CLP).A total of 30 male SD rats were divided into four groups:sham group,CLP group,XBJ + axitinib group,and XBJ group.XBJ was intraperitoneally injected 2 h before CLP.Hemodynamic data(blood pressure and heart rate) were recorded.The intestinal microcirculation data of the rats were analyzed via microcirculation imaging.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) kits were used to detect the serum levels of interleukin-6(IL-6),C-reactive protein(CRP),and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) in the rats.Histological analysis and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze the injury of small intestinal microvascular endothelial cells and small intestinal mucosa in rats.The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A(VEGF-A),phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI3K),phosphorylated PI3K(p-PI3K),protein kinase B(Akt),and phosphorylated Akt(p-Akt) in the small intestine was analyzed via Western blotting.RESULTS:XBJ improved intestinal microcirculation dysfunction in septic rats,alleviated the injury of small intestinal microvascular endothelial cells and small intestinal mucosa,and reduced the systemic inflammatory response.Moreover,XBJ upregulated the expression of VEGF-A,p-PI3K/total PI3K,and p-Akt/total Akt in the rat small intestine.CONCLUSION:XBJ may improve intestinal microcirculation dysfunction in septic rats possibly through the VEGF-A/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

Engineering molecular regulation for SiO_(x) with long-term stable cycle and high Coulombic efficiency as lithium-ion battery anodes

In the current situation where the practical application of silicon anode materials encounters great challenges,silicon oxide(SiO_(x),0≤x≤2)has attracted the attention of researchers due to its relatively small volume expansion,stable cycling performance,and low cost,which is possible to realize commercial applications earlier than silicon anode.However,it remains a challenge to prepare SiO_(x)materials with long-term stable cycling performance and high Coulombic efficiency using low-cost methods.In this work,SiO_(x)anode material with high Coulombic efficiency and good long-term cycling stability was prepared at a low cost by hydrolysis of siloxane and in situ polymerization of phenolic resin.The hydrolysis of siloxane was further regulated by different silane coupling agents to regulate the size and microstructure of prepared SiO_(x)materials,which displayed the substantially improved electrochemical performance.The excellent electrochemical performance of SiO_(x)prepared by regulated hydrolysis of siloxane with silane coupling agents is attributed to the effect of silane coupling agent on size and microstructure of SiO_(x),revealing that the strategy of modulating the hydrolysis of siloxane by silane coupling agent is a potential method to prepare high-performance SiO_(x)materials.

Effect of red clover isoflavones on hormone, immune, inflammatory,and plasma biochemistry in lactating dairy cows

This study was to conducted to investigate the effect of red clover isoflavones on the health indicated by immune status and blood biochemistry in dairy cows. Sixty-eight healthy Holstein lactating cows were randomly divided into four treatments(n = 17 per treatment) from 5 blocks according to milk yield using a randomized complete block design. No initial differences in parity(2.13 ± 1.21), days in milk(165 ± 21 d), and milk yield(33.93 ± 3.81 kg/d) between groups. Cows were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0, 2, 4, or 8 g/kg red clover extract(RCE) in diet(dry matter based). Feeding, refusal feed weights, and milk yield were recorded three consecutive days in weeks 0, 4, 8, and 12. Blood was collected from the tail vein of the cows on the last day of weeks 4, 8 and 12, 1 h after the morning feeding,and analyzed for hormones, immunoglobulins, inflammatory markers, and markers of liver and kidney activities. The dry matter intake was significantly decreased by 3.7% in the 8 g/kg group(P tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-a, interleukin(IL)-6, and IL-1β levels decreased linearly with increasing dietary RCE levels. Plasma IL-18 levels showed a quadratic effect with increasing dietary RCE levels, with significantly lower levels in both of the 2 and 4 g/kg groups(P 0.05). These results recommend the supplementation of RCE at a level from 2 to4 g/kg DM.

Investigating the Absorption and Desorption Behavior of Methylene Chloride in the Poly(aryl ether ketone) Film with Different Crystallinities

Poly(aryl ether keton e)(PAEK) films with different crystallinities were obtained by controlling the cooling rate,which were subjected to the absorption and desorption of methylene chloride(CH_(2)Cl_(2)).We employed attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared(ATR-FTIR)spectroscopy analyses to investigate the diffusion behavior of CH_(2)Cl_(2) in PAEK films with different crystallinities.According to the Fickian diffusion model,the calculated diffu sion coefficients of CH_(2)Cl_(2) in PAEK films were observed to decrease with increasing crystallinity.The effect of CH_(2)Cl_(2)absorption and desorption on the mechanical properties of PAEK films with different crystallinity was further analyzed using tensile tests.The tensile tests exhibited that CH_(2)Cl_(2) has two concurrent effects:plasticization and solvent-induced crystallization.Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction(WXRD) techniques further confirmed solvent-induced crystallization behavior.The results would be beneficial to understand the solvent resistance of PAEK materials and consequently provide the practical application conditions of PAEK with a theoretical basis.
