In the present work, the surface characteristics of Electrical Discharge Machined (EDM) Al (6351)eSiC and Al (6351)eSiCeB4C composites are investigated. The composites are prepared by employing the conventional stir casting technique, as it can produce better particle dispersion in the matrix. The detailed experimental study is performed on the composites by varying current (I), duty factor (t), pulse on time (Ton), and the gap voltage (V) in order to analyze the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) formed in the sub surface and the average crater diameter formed on the machined surface of the composites as an output function. The formation of recast layers, presence of bubbles and the surface texture of the composites at various machining conditions are observed. The results show that the increased Metal Removal Rate (MRR) increases the depth of HAZ and the average crater diameter on the machined area. Further, the addition of B4C particles to the composite produces more surface defect than the AleSiC composite.

The purpose of this study was to determine average penile length and to investigate the relationship between penile length and somatometric parameters in a group of young, healthy turkish men. A total of 1132 men were included in the study. The age, height and weight of the subjects were recorded. Penile length was measured in both flaccid and stretched states. The correlation between penile length and somatometric parameters was analysed. The mean age of the subjects was 20.3±.0.9 years. The mean penile length in flaccid and stretched states was 9.3± 1.3 and 13.7± 1.6 cm, respectively （P〈0.001）. There was a positive correlation between flaccid and stretched penile length （r=0.800, P〈0.001）. The mean testicular volume was 22.0±2.8 cm3. A weak positive correlation was detected between penile length and mean testicular volume （r=0.143 for flaccid penile length and r=-0. 140 for stretched penile length, P〈0.001 for both）. Similarly, weak positive correlations were found between penile length （both flaccid and stretched） and height, weight and body mass index, respectively （P〈0.001, for all）. These results demonstrate that somatometric parameters are correlated with penile length. We believe that further studies would provide more information about the causal relationship.

AIM： To study the effect of vasoactive intestinal peptide （VIP） on wound healing in experimental alkali burns of the cornea. METHODS： Twenty-seven albino rabbits, weighing 3.2 -0.75 kg were used. Alkali burns were induced on corneas by applying 10 mm Whatman paper No：50 soaked in 1 mol/L NaOH. They have further classified into 5 groups as follows： 1） control group given no treatment （n=5）; 2） VIP given subconjunctivally （n=6）; 3） VIP injected into anterior chamber （n=6）; 4） NaCI 0.9% given subconjunctivally （n=5）; 5） NaCI 0.9% given into the anterior chamber （n=5）. All treatment protocols except control group were followed by topical eye drops composed of VIP at two hourly intervals for one week from 8 *** to 6 p.m, RESULTS： VIP treated groups of rabbits with alkali burns were found to have better wound healing findings histo-pathologically when compared to those of control group who have received no treatment on day 30. No differences were observed between groups in respect to degree of polymorphonuclear leukocytes （PMNL） infiltration and degree of loss of amorphous substrate on day 15. However, PMNL infiltration and degree of loss of amorphous substrate were lower in Groups 2 and 3 when compared to that of control group on day 30 （P〈0.05）. CONCLUSION： We have shown that VIP has positive effects on alkali induced corneal burns. VIP may inhibit PMNL migration to cornea through an immunomodulatory effect. Inhibition of PMNL migration might reduce the release of collagenaees and this might prevent the extracellular amorphous substance loss.

Objective: To investigate the effects of atranorin, a lichen secondary metabolite, on SPC212 malignant mesothelioma cells in vitro. Methods: SPC212 malignant mesothelioma cell line was used. 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was used to evaluate cytotoxic effects of atranorin and cisplatin at 24, 48 and 72 h. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and 4’,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole, dihydrochloride staining were used for determining cell and nucleus morphology, respectively. Wound healing assay was used for investigating cell migration. The xCELLigence real-time cell analysis system was used for determining cell ***: Atranorin at 5-450 μM decreased cell viability at 24, 48 and 72 h. IC50 values of atranorin were 300.94, 292.6 and 278.02 μM at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively;meanwhile, the IC50 values of cisplatin were 128.00, 34.37 and 17.05 μM at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. Furthermore, atranorin disrupted cell and nuclear morphology with increasing concentrations. Atranorin significantly reduced cell migration by 38%, 37% and 35% at 300, 250 and 200 μM, respectively(P<0.000). Atranorin at 160-450 μM decreased cell proliferation at 72 h(P<0.000).Conclusions: Atranorin has cytotoxic, antiproliferative, apoptotic and cell migration inhibitory effects on SPC212 malignant mesothelioma cancer cells.

采用粉末冶金和热压技术制备了不同梯度层数和不同SiC含量的Al2024/SiC功能梯度材料。研究了梯度层数和SiC含量对Al2024/SiC功能梯度材料显微组织和力学性能的影响。XRD和SEM-EDX分析表明Al和SiC为复合材料的主要成分,同时还有Al_4C_3、CuAl_2和CuMgAl_2等其他成分。表层含有40%SiC的两层Al2024/SiC功能梯度材料具有最高的抗弯强度,为1400 MPa。显微硬度的降低和孔隙率的变化与SiC含量和金属间化合物的形成有关。结果表明,显微硬度的增加和金属间化合物的形成对复合材料力学性能的提高起重要作用。

Mechanical and thermal properties of AA7075/TiO2/Fly ash hybrid composites obtained by hot forging

In the present paper, multiple reinforcements TiO2 and fly ash were utilized for the fabrication of AA7075 matrix based hybrid composites using stir casting technique followed by hot forging. In hybrid composites, the fly ash content was fixed to 3 wt% while that of TiO2 was varied from 2.5 to 10 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed homogenous dispersion of both the reinforcements in AA7075 *** test was conducted to study the mechanical behaviour of hybrid composites. The hybrid composites showed increase in compressive strength with the incorporation of multiple reinforcements and further increased with the increase in the weight fractions of TiO2 particles. The coefficient of thermal expansion was measured between 50 and 250 ℃ with a high precision thermal mechanical analyser. The thermal coefficient of hybrid composites decreased with the addition of TiO2 and fly ash. However a slight decrease in thermal conductivity of hybrid composites was observed when compared to that of AA7075 alloy.

Objective To study the effects of radiation emitted by mobile phones on bone strength and caffeic acid phenethyl ester （CAPE） on the changes induced by radiation. Methods Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups. Rats in the control group （first group） were left within the experimental setup for 30 min/day for 28 days without radiation exposure. Nine hundred MHz radiation group was broke down into 2 subgroups （group 1/2）. Both subgroups were exposed to radiation for 28 days （30 min/day）. The next group was also divided into 2 subgroups （group 3/4）. Each was exposed to 1800 MHz of radiation for 28 days （30 mirdday）. The third and fifth groups were also treated with CAPE for 28 days. Treatment groups received ip caffeic acid phenethyl ester （10 ktmol/kg per day） before radiation session. Bone fracture was analyzed. Results Breaking force, bending strength, and total fracture energy decreased in the irradiated groups but increased in the treatment groups. Conclusion Radiation and CAPE can significantly improve bone.

I read the article of Zhang, et al. with great interest. They investigated the association of homocysteine with arterial stiffness in Chinese community-based elderly persons. The carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) was significantly higher in the high homocyteine group than in the normal one, however, there was no differences in carotid-radial PWV between the high homocyteine group and the normal one. Homocysteine levels were strongly associated with the carotid- femoral PWV even after adjustment for classical risk factors of cardiovascular disease. I congra-tulate the authors for this important study. However, I want to make minor criticism for this study from the methodo-logical aspect.
