Malnutrition Assessed Using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index Is Associated with Preoperative Incidence of Deep Vein Thrombosis in Japanese Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty

Purpose: Few studies have evaluated the association between malnutrition and the risk of preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing primary total joint arthroplasty. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of preoperative DVT in Japanese patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and the importance of malnutrition in the risk of preoperative DVT. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 394 patients admitted for primary TKA at our institution between January 2019 and December 2023. All patients scheduled for TKA at our institution had serum D-dimer levels measured preoperatively. Lower-limb ultrasonography was examined to confirm the presence of DVT in patients with D-dimer levels ≥ 1.0 µg/mL or who were considered to be at high risk of DVT by the treating physician. Based on the results of lower-limb ultrasonography, all patients were divided into the non-DVT and DVT groups. The incidence of and risk factors for preoperative DVT were investigated, as well as the correlation of DVT with the patient’s nutritional parameters. We used two representative tools for nutritional assessment: the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and Controlling Nutritional Status Score. Results: The mean age was 77.8 ± 6.9 years. Preoperative DVT was diagnosed in 57 of the 394 (14.5%) patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that advanced age and malnutrition status, assessed using the GNRI, were independent risk factors for preoperative DVT. Conclusion: A high incidence of preoperative DVT was observed in patients who underwent TKA. Malnutrition status, as assessed using the GNRI, increased the risk of preoperative DVT. Our findings suggest that clinicians should consider these factors when tailoring preventive strategies to mitigate DVT risk in patients undergoing TKA.

γ-Butyrolactone structures are commonly found in various natural products and serve as crucial building blocks in organic ***,the development of methods for synthesizingγ-butyrolactones has garnered significant interest within the organic synthesis *** this study,we present a direct and highly efficient approach for the synthesis ofγ-butyrolactones from allylic ***,this study represents the first instance ofγ-butyrolactone synthesis initiated by radical hydrocarboxylation using CO_(2)^(•–),generated from metal formates,followed by *** two-step process is achieved through the synergistic interaction of photoredox and hydrogen atom transfer(HAT)catalysis,resulting in the production ofγ-butyrolactones with exceptional ***,when employingα,α-diaryl allylic alcohol derivatives as substrates,the reaction involves 1,2-aryl migration,which occurs concomitantly with CO_(2)^(•–)addition,leading to the formation of 4,5-substituted lactones in a good *** artificial force induced reaction(AFIR)method identified the preferred 1,2-aryl migration pathway along with potential byproduct pathways,in which the targeted 1,2-migration was found to be the most plausible pathway.

Malnutrition and Its Association with the Mortality of Patients with Femoral Intertrochanteric Fractures: A Retrospective Analysis of Japanese Patients

Background: The incidence of femoral intertrochanteric fractures in older adults is higher than that of femoral neck fractures;however, both conditions are often analyzed together as proximal femoral fractures. Considering the difference in treatment, postoperative complication, and mortality risk, these two fractures should be analyzed separately. This study aimed to analyze 1-year mortality and its risk factors in patients with surgically treated femoral intertrochanteric fractures. Methods: Consecutive patients with intertrochanteric fractures who underwent surgical interventions at our institution between January 2017 and December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 238 patients were eligible for inclusion in this study. Patients’ demographic and clinical information were retrospectively collected. Patients were divided into the 1-year mortality (n = 16) and survival (n = 222) groups. The incidence of 1-year mortality and its independent risk factors were investigated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: The mean age of patients was 85.6 ± 8.5 years. The 1-year mortality rate was 6.7% (16/238). Preoperative albumin level, the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), and malnutrition status (GNRI p = 0.02, p = 0.02, and p = 0.0011, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that malnutrition status (GNRI p = 0.035) was an independent risk factor for 1-year mortality. Conclusion: Malnutrition status assessed using GNRI (GNRI < 92) was an independent risk factor for 1-year mortality. Our findings suggest that GNRI may be an effective screening tool for predicting postoperative 1-year mortality of patients with surgically treated femoral intertrochanteric fractures.

Facile fabrication of stretchable Ag nanowire/polyurethane electrodes using high intensity pulsed light

Silver nanowires （AgNWs） have emerged as a promising nanomaterial for next generation stretchable electronics. However, until now, the fabrication of AgNW- based components has been hampered by complex and time-consuming steps. Here, we introduce a facile, fast, and one-step methodology for the fabrication of highly conductive and stretchable AgNW/polyurethane （PU） composite electrodes based on a high-intensity pulsed light （HIPL） technique. HIPL simultaneously improved wire-wire junction conductivity and wire-substrate adhesion at room temperature and in air within 50 μs, omitting the complex transfer-curing-implanting process. Owing to the localized deformation of PU at interfaces with AgNWs, embedding of the nanowires was rapidly carried out without substantial substrate damage. The resulting electrode retained a low sheet resistance （high electrical conductivity） of 〈10 Ω/sq even under 100% strain, or after 1,000 continuous stretching-relaxation cycles, with a peak strain of 60%. The fabricated electrode has found immediate application as a sensor for motion detection. Furthermore, based on our electrode, a light emitting diode （LED） driven by integrated stretchable AgNW conductors has been fabricated. In conclusion, our present fabrication approach is fast, simple, scalable, and cost- efficient, making it a good candidate for a future roll-to-roll process.

Dibromoacetonitrile(DBAN) is a disinfection byproduct(DBP) and linked with cancer in rodents, but the mechanism of its carcinogenicity has not been fully elucidated. We recently reported that DBAN induced inhibition of nucleotide excision repair(NER). In this study, we investigated if glutathione(GSH) is involved in the DBAN-induced inhibition of NER. Human keratinocytes Ha Ca T were pretreated with L-buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine(BSO) to deplete intracellular GSH. BSO treatment markedly potentiated the DBAN-induced NER inhibition as well as intracellular oxidation. The recruitment of NER proteins(transcription factor IIH, and xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group G) to DNA damage sites was inhibited by DBAN, which was further exacerbated by BSO treatment. Our results suggest that intracellular GSH protects cells from DBAN-induced genotoxicity including inhibition of DNA damage repair.

In social tagging systems such as Delicious and Flickr,users collaboratively manage tags to annotate ***,a social tagging system can be modeled as a （user,tag,resource） hypernetwork,where there are three different types of nodes,namely users,resources and tags,and each hyperedge has three end nodes,connecting a user,a resource and a tag that the user employs to annotate the *** how can we automatically cluster related users,resources and tags,respectively？ This is a problem of community detection in a 3-partite,3-uniform *** generally,given a K-partite K-uniform （hyper）network,where each （hyper）edge is a K-tuple composed of nodes of K different types,how can we automatically detect communities for nodes of different types？ In this paper,by turning this problem into a problem of finding an efficient compression of the （hyper）network＇s structure,we propose a quality function for measuring the goodness of partitions of a K-partite K-uniform （hyper）network into communities,and develop a fast community detection method based on *** method overcomes the limitations of state of the art techniques and has several desired properties such as comprehensive,parameter-free,and *** compare our method with existing methods in both synthetic and real-world datasets.

In this study, we combined silver nanowires with cupro fabrics using a dipping- drying method to prepare electrically conductive fabrics. The silver nanowires were first adhered to and then absorbed by microfibers to form electrically conductive fibers. They also filled the gaps and spaces between the microfibers, and were stacked or piled together to form networks with high electrical conductivity. The electrically conductive fabric had low resistance and good stretchability, e.g., 0.0047-0.0091 Ωin the strain range of 0-190%. They also exhibited stable electrical conductivity, as well as excellent flexibility, which remained even when the fabric was stretched, shrunk, or bent. The results show that the electrically conductive fabric can be used as a smart textile, especially in fields associated with weaving, clothing, food products, lifestyle products, medicine, biology, electronics, aviation, and military equipment and accessories.
