由于土壤与大气之间的能量和水分交换主要发生在界面层,因此在研究地气相互作用时,浅层土壤的冻融状况尤为重要.根据中日国际合作项目CEOP/CAMP-Tibet的观测结果分析发现,就青藏高原中部那曲附近而言,表层土壤真正冻结的日数较少(1个月左右).而存在日冻融循环过程的日数则较多(6个月左右).土壤冻融状态的频繁变化,会极大地影响土壤和大气之间的水分和能量的交换过程.指出土壤在不同状态(完全消融、完全冻结和存在日冻融循环)下,土壤与大气之间的相互作用过程是个值得深入研究的问题.

Prone Position: Does It Help with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) Requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)?

Introduction: Lung protective ventilation therapy with low tidal volume-high PEEP is the standard treatment for the patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Oscillators are occasionally used for salvage ventilation in cases where poor compliance restricts the use of traditional ventilation with ARDS. In addition to ventilator therapy, prone positioning has been used to improve oxygenation. We presented a challenging case of ARDS, which failed medical management extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support and oscillatory ventilation. Prone positioning was initiated which improved oxygenation, respiratory compliance and posterior atelectasis. Case presentation: A 41-year-old morbid obese female developed ARDS due to influenza pneumonia. The patient remained hypoxic despite optimum medical and ventilator management and required veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO). CT scan of the chest showed ARDS with posterior consolidation. Despite ARDSnet ventilation support, antiviral therapy and ECMO support, there was no clinical improvement. High frequency oscillatory ventilation was initiated on ECMO day #13, which resulted in no respiratory improvement over the next 5 days. On ECMO day #18, the patient was placed on a Rotaprone? bed Therapy, utilizing a proning strategy of 16 hours a day. The clinical improvements observed were resolving of the consolidation on CXR, improvements in ventilatory parameters and decreased oxygen requirements. The patient was successfully weaned off ECMO on POD#25 (8 days post prone bed). Conclusions: Prone position improved oxygen saturation and pulmonary compliance in severe ARDS requiring ECMO and it might facilitate early weaning.

This report presents a climatology of the landfall characteristics of tropical cyclones(TCs) by country. Landfalling TCs can produce strong winds, storm surges and severe flooding that may result in loss of life and widespread damages. Although historically many governments have estimated the frequency of TC landfall for their own country, less work has been undertaken from a global viewpoint. This report addresses that gap by presenting a comparative assessment that may assist global efforts toward disaster risk reduction through improved understanding of the relative level of exposure of countries to TCs. The various aspects of the climatology of TC landfalls for each country are provided. Using the definition of a TC landfall as the intersection of the TC track with a coastline, eleven countries were detected as having an average of at least one landfall per year. China has the highest rate of TC landfalls. The Philippines ranks second and Japan third. A lot of countries that face the North Western Pacific were included in TC-Landfall countries, which is attributed to the high rate of TC formation over the basin.

Effects of Clearance around Square Pillar in Rectangular Enclosure on Cooling Performance of Pulsating Airflow

This study focuses on a development of heat transfer enhancement techniques using pulsating flow for thermal equipment such as electronic equipment and heat exchangers. In this report, the heat transfer performance of the pulsating airflow around the heating pillar mounted in the rectangular enclosure was investigated experimentally while changing the size of the clearance between the enclosure wall and the pillar. The pillar simulates the components mounted in thermal equipment such as fins and electrical components. The rectangular enclosure simulates an enclosure of electronic equipment and heat exchangers. The shape of the cross section of the pillar was square having sides 30 mm. The dimension of the width of the enclosure was changed from 50 mm to 80 mm. It was found that the heat transfer performance of the pulsating airflow became higher than that of the steady flow regardless of the dimension of the clearance. The heat transfer enhancement around heating components by the pulsating flow can be available regardless of the clearance around the components.

Induction of Oral Tolerance in Neonatal Mice by Transfer of Food Allergens as IgA-Immune Complexes in Breast Milk

Various opinions have been presented on the merits and demerits that breastfeeding gives for the allergic onset of the babies. In this report, we focused on whether food proteins eaten by mother mice and secreted into breast milk as IgA-immune complexes contribute to the allergy prevention through oral tolerance in infants who ingest the milk. BALB/c mice were divided into two groups;E-group fed only egg white proteins and M-group fed only cow’s milk proteins as a dietary protein source. After immunizing M-group infants fed their own mother’s milk with ovalbumin/alum, diarrhea associated with experimental Th2 intestinal inflammation was induced by oral administration of ovalbumin. The diarrhea was dramatically suppressed in E-group infants. Concomitantly, low level of serum anti-ovalbumin- and ovomucoid-IgG1 and IgE, suppression of IL-4 synthesis by spleen cells, and low incidence of anaphylactic death after intravenous injection of ovalbumin were observed preferentially in E-infants. Immune complexes of respective dietary proteins and IgA were found in the breast milk obtained from each group of mother. Oral administration of pseudo immune complex chemically synthesized with ovalbumin and monoclonal mouse IgA in advance effectively suppressed anti-ovalbumin-IgG1 synthesis in adult mice after immunization with ovalbumin. The tolerance induced by the pseudo immune complex of ovalbumin diminished spontaneously while mice did not take egg white proteins. Thus, immune tolerance and then prevention of allergic disorder against dietary proteins were acquired via breastfeeding by mothers feeding the relevant proteins, probably through the immune complexes of dietary proteins and sIgAs secreted into breast milk.
