Consequences of coinfection with protective symbionts on the host phenotype and symbiont titres in the pea aphid system

Symbiotic associations between microbes and insects are widespread, and it is frequent that several symbionts share the same host individual. Hence, interactions can occur between these symbionts, influencing their respective abundance within the host with consequences on its phenotype. Here, we investigate the effects of multiple infections in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisurn, which is the host of an obligatory and several facultative symbionts. In particular, we study the influence of a coinfection with 2 protective symbionts： Harniltonella defensa, which confers protection against parasitoids, and Rickettsiella viridis, which provides protection against fungal pathogens and predators. The effects of Hamiltonella-Rickettsiella coinfection on the respective abundance of the symbionts, host fitness and efficacy of enemy protection were studied. Asymmetrical interactions between the 2 protective symbionts have been found： when they coinfect the same aphid individuals, the Rickettsiella infection affected Hamiltonella abundance within hosts but not the Hamiltonella-mediated protective phenotype while the Hamiltonella infection negatively influences the Rickettsiella-mediated protective phenotype but not its abundance. Harboring the 2 protective symbionts also reduced the survival and fecundity of host individuals. Overall, this work highlights the effects of multiple infections on symbiont abundances and host traits that are likely to impact the maintenance of the symbiotic associations in natural habitats.

Oncological results, functional outcomes and health-related quality-of-life in men who received a radical prostatectomy or external beam radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer： a study on long-term patient outcome with risk stratification

Health-related quality-of-life （HRQOL） after a radical prostatectomy （RP） or extemal beam radiation therapy （EBRT） has not been studied in conjunction with oncological outcomes in relation to disease risk stratification. Moreover, the long-term outcomes of these treatment approaches have not been studied. We retrospectively analyzed oncological outcomes between consecutive patients receiving RP （n = 86） and EBRT （n = 76） for localized prostate cancer. HRQOL and functional outcomes could be assessed in 62 RP （79%） and 54 EBRT （79%） patients over a 3-year follow-up period （median： 41 months） using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 （SF-36） and the University of Califomia Los Angeles Prostate Cancer Index （UCLA PCI）. The 5-year biochemical progression-free survival did not differ between the RP and EBRT groups for low-risk （74.6% vs. 75.0%, P = 0.931） and intermediate-risk （61.3% vs. 71.1%, P = 0.691） patients. For high-risk patients, progression-free survival was lower in the RP group （45.1%） than in the EBRT group （79.7%）（P = 0.002）. The general HRQOL was comparable between the two groups. Regarding functional outcomes, the RP group reported lower scores on urinary function and less urinary bother and sexual bother than the EBRT group （P 〈 0.001, P 〈 0.05 and P 〈 0.001, respectively）. With risk stratification, the low- and intermediate-risk patients in the RP group reported poorer urinary function than patients in the EBRT group （P 〈 0.001 for each）. The sexual function of the high-risk patients in the EBRT group was better than that of the same risk RP patients （P 〈 0.001）. Biochemical recurrence was not associated with the UCLA PCI score in either group. In conclusion, low- to intermediate-risk patients treated with an RP may report relatively decreased urinary function during long-term follow-up. The patient＇s HRQOL after treatment did not depend on biochemical recurrence.

The oxidative polymerization of aryl sulfoxides provides a novel polysulfo-nium compound, poly(methylsulfonio-1,4-phenylenethio-1,4-phenylene cation) in quantita-tive yield. The polymerization proceeds efficiently in an acidic solution under atmosphericconditions. Oxygen, chemical and electrochemical oxidations are available. Vanadyl acety-lacetonate and cerium ammonium nitrate act as an effective catalyst for the oxygen ox-idative polymerization. The polymerization mechanism involves multielectron oxidation ofthe sulfides followed by successive electrophilic substitution. The resulting polyarylenesul-fonium cations are useful as a soluble precursor for the synthesis of high molecular weight(M_w>10~5) poly(thio arylne)s.

TWIP (TWinning Induced Plasticity) steel is one of the advanced steels with attractive mechanical *** typical composition of TWIP steel includes a large amount of manganese with some aluminum and *** study has shown that TWIP steel exhibits high strength with adequate elongation at high strain rates,so that TWIP steel is desired to be applied for automotive ***,there are few studies concerning the deformation behaviors aimed to make clear the TWIP effect in TWIP *** this study,static tensile deformation behaviors of an Fe-30Mn-3Al-3Si TWIP steel and a SUS310S one were studied by in situ neutron diffraction during tensile *** terms of mechanical properties obtained by the static tensile tests,the TWIP steel showed better balance of tensile strength and uniform elongation than the 310S *** angular dispersion neutron diffraction with a wavelength of 0.16 nm was performed during stepwise tensile testing by using a neutron diffractometer for residual stress analysis (RESA) at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.A specimen was extended in a step by step manner and neutron diffraction profiles of (111),(200) and (311) for austenite were obtained at each *** diffraction peak,lattice plane spacing,lattice plane strain and so on were determined by the profile analysis as a function of applied *** changes of lattice plane strain for austenite in the TWIP and 310S steels indicated several deformation stages in the tensile deformation and can be discussed the difference of intergranular stress between the two samples.

Clinical importance of colonoscopy in patients with gastric neoplasm undergoing endoscopic submucosal dissection

AIM To evaluate the usefulness of total colonoscopy(TCS) for patients undergoing gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) and to assess risk factors for colorectal *** Of the 263 patients who underwent ESD at our department between May 2010 and December 2013, 172 patients undergoing TCS during a one-year period before and after ESD were targeted. After excluding patients with a history of surgery or endoscopic therapy for colorectal neoplasms, 158 patients were analyzed. Of the 868 asymptomatic patients who underwent TCS during the same period because of positive fecal immunochemical test(FIT) results, 158 patients with no history of either surgery or endoscopic therapy for colorectal neoplasms who were matched for age and sex served as the control group for *** TCS revealed adenoma less than 10 mm in 53 patients(33.6%), advanced adenoma in 17(10.8%), early colorectal cancer in 5(3.2%), and advanced colorectalcancer in 4(2.5%). When the presence or absence of adenoma less than 10 mm, advanced adenoma, and colorectal cancer and the number of adenomas were compared between patients undergoing ESD and FITpositive patients, there were no statistically significant differences in any of the parameters assessed. The patients undergoing ESD appeared to have the same risk of colorectal neoplasms as the FIT-positive patients. Colorectal neoplasms were clearly more common in men than in women(P = 0.031). Advanced adenoma and cancer were significantly more frequent in patients with at least two of the following conditions: hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus(P = 0.019).CONCLUSION In patients undergoing gastric ESD, TCS appears to be important for detecting synchronous double neoplasms. Advanced adenoma and cancer were more common in patients with at least two of the following conditions: hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. Caution is therefore especially warranted in patients with these risk factors.

Human Serum Albumin Hybrid Incorporating Synthetic Hemes:A Novel O_2-Carrying Hemoprotein

Incorporation of synthetic heme(FeP) into recombinant human serum albumin(rHSA) provides an artificial hemoprotein(rHSA-FeP) which can bind and release oxygen reversibly under physiological conditions(in aqueous media, pH 7.3, 37 ℃) like hemoglobin(Hb) and myoglobin. An rHSA host absorbs maximally eight FeP molecules, and the solution properties are almost identical to those of rHSA itself. The second-order structure and surface charge distribution of rHSA were always constant independent of the binding numbers of FeP. Its O 2-binding ability satisfies the initial clinical requirements for red cell substitute. Although the NO-binding affinity is 8-fold high compared to the Hbs, administration of this fluid into rats showed negligible change in the blood pressure. Physiological responses to exchange transfusion with this rHSA-FeP into anaesthetized rats have also been evaluated.

Body mass index correlated with forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity in a population with a relatively low prevalence of obesity

Background Obesity is the most common metabolic disease in the world. However, the relationship between obesity and lung function is not fully understood. Although several longitudinal studies have shown that increases in body weight can lead to reductions in pulmonary function, whether this is the case with the Japanese population and whether high body mass index （BMI） status alone represents an appropriate predictor of obstructive lung dysfunction remains *** purpose of present study was to estimate the effect of BMI on lung function measured by spirometry of Japanese patients in general clinics. We measured BMI and performed spirometry on screening patients who had consulted general *** Subjects comprised 1231 patients ≥40 years of age （mean age （65.0±12.0） years, 525 men, 706 women） who had consulted clinics in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, for non-respiratory disease. BMI was calculated and lung function was measured by *** BMI was found to be positively correlated with forced expiratory volume in 1 second （FEV1）/forced vital capacity （FVC） in men and with maximum mid-expiratory flow （MMF） in all subjects. Following adjustment for relevant factors, a significant positive correlation between BMI and FEV1/FVC was identified for all subjects. Comparison between subjects with normal BMI （18.5-25.0） and higher BMI （25.1-30.0） also demonstrated that FEV1/FVC and percentage of predicted maximum mid-expiratory flow （%MMF） were significantly higher in the latter *** In a population without marked respiratory disease, higher BMI subjects showed less obstructive pulmonary dysfunction compared to normal BMI subjects. High BMI status alone may be inappropriate as a predictor of obstructive lung dysfunction, particularly in populations with a low prevalence of obesity.

Computed tomography virtual endoscopy with angiographic imaging for the treatment of type Ⅳ-A choledochal cyst

Type Ⅳ-A choledochal cysts (CCs) are a congenital biliary anomaly which involve dilatation of the extrahepatic and intrahepatic bile ducts. We present the case of a 30-year-old woman with type Ⅳ-A CC, on whom threedimensional computed tomography (3D CT) and virtual endoscopy were performed. 3D CT revealed partial dilatation in the posterior branch of the intrahepatic bile duct and a relative stricture between it and the extrahepatic bile duct. Virtual endoscopy showed that this stricture was membrane-like and separated from the surrounding blood vessels. Based on these image findings, complete cyst resection, bile duct plasty for the stricture, and hepaticojejunostomy were safely performed. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of imaging by virtual endoscopy of the biliary tract which show the surrounding blood vessels running along the bile duct.

The Effect of Reflector with Sound-Absorbing Material on Supersonic Jet Noise

This paper describes an experimental work to investigate the effect of a reflector on supersonic jet noise radiated from a convergent-divergent nozzle with a design Mach number 2.0. In the present study, a metal reflector and reflectors made of three different sound-absorbing materials (grass wool and polyurethane foam) were employed,and the reflector size was varied. Acoustic measurement is carried out to obtain the acoustic characteristics such as frequency, amplitude of screech tone and overall sound pressure level (OASPL). A high-quality schlieren optical system is used to visualize the detailed structure of supersonic jet. The results obtained show that the acoustic characteristics of supersonic jet noise are strongly dependent upon the jet pressure ratio and the reflector size. It is also found that the reflector with sound-absorbing material reduces the screech tone amplitude by about 5-13dB and the overall sound pressure levels by about 2-5dB, compared with those of the metal reflector.
