Failure to identify an acute exercise effect on executive function assessed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test

Purpose： Acute exercise has been linked to the facilitation of executive function, but little is known regarding executive function assessed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test （WCST）. The present research consisted of two experiments aimed to determine whether acute aerobic exercise influences successive WCST performance. Methods： In Study 1, 27 young adults were randomly assigned to the exercise or reading control group and then instiucted to perform the WCST before and after assigned treatment. In exercise group, participants completed a single bout aerobic exercise with moderate intensity for 20 min on a stationary bike. A similar experimental protocol was replicated in Study 2 with 24 late middle-aged adults to look for age differences during adulthood and control for a potential ceiling effect at young adult age. Results： Although a significant time effect was observed in young adults, both studies revealed that there was no main effect for treatment or an interaction between treatment and time on any of the WCST indices. Conclusion： Acute aerobic exercise failed to influence executive function as assessed by the WCST, revealing that this classical neuropsy- chological test tapping executive function may not be sensitive to acute exercise. Our findings suggest that acute exercise does not broadly affect the entire family of executive functions, or its effect on a specific aspect of executive function may be task-dependent, as proposed by Etnier and Chanj~ （2009）.

The biocidal effects of free nitrous acid (FNA) have found applications in multiple units in an urban wastewater system, including sewer networks, wastewater treatment processes, and sludge treatment processes. However, these applications are associated with chemical costs as both nitrite and acid are needed to produce FNA at the required levels. The recent discovery of novel acid-tolerant ammonia oxidizers offers the possibility to produce FNA from domestic wastewater, enabling the development of next-generation FNA-based technologies capable of achieving self-sustaining FNA production. In this study, we focus on the concept of in situ FNA generation facilitated by acid-tolerant ammonia oxidizers and highlight the multiple benefits it creates, after a brief review of the historical development of FNA-based technologies. We will discuss how wastewater systems can be made more energy-efficient and sustainable by leveraging the potential of acid-tolerant ammonia oxidizers.

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy and various methods have been introduced to decrease the possibility of *** recurrence(ER)is related to worse *** date,few observational studies have reported on the analysis of rectal ***,we reported on the timing and risk factors for the ER of resectable rectal cancer at our *** To analyze a cohort of patients with local and/or distant recurrence following the radical resection of the primary *** Data were retrospectively collected from the institutional database from March 2011 to January *** data at diagnosis,perioperative and postoperative data,and first recurrence were collected and *** was defined via receiver operating characteristic *** factors were evaluated using the Kaplan–Meier method and Cox proportional hazards *** We included 131 *** optimal cut off value of recurrence-free survival(RFS)to differentiate between ER(n=55,41.9%)and late recurrence(LR)(n=76,58.1%)was 8 *** median post-recurrence survival(PRS)of ER and LR was 1.4 mo and 2.9 mo,respectively(P=0.008)but PRS was not strongly associated with RFS(R²=0.04).Risk factors included age≥70 years[hazard ratio(HR)=1.752,P=0.047],preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy(HR=3.683,P9 d(HR=0.441,P=0.006).CONCLUSION RFS of 8 mo was the optimal cut-off *** ER was not associated with PRS,it was still related to prognosis;thus,intense surveillance is recommended.

The efficacy of pelvic radiation in the management of locally advanced stage rectal cancer has come under scrutiny in the context of modern precision medicine and systemic therapy as evidenced by recent clinical trials such as FOWARC(J Clin Oncol 2019;37:3223-3233),NCT04165772(N Engl J Med 2022;386:2363-2376),and PROSPECT(N Engl J Med 2023;389:322-334).In this review,we comprehensively assess these pivotal trials and offer additional insights into the evolving role of pelvic radiation in contemporary oncology.
