The unbalanced and inadequate use of fertilizers is one of the causes of soil degradation. Combined with the ever-increasing population, it is necessary to find sustainable agricultural production alternatives. The present work aims to determine the effect of different rates and mixtutes of organic amendments on soil fertility and the performance of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). In the field, treatments consisted of solid household waste and faecal sludge in the ratios of 3/5 (V1), and a mixture of faecal sludge and household waste in the ratio of 3/5 with 900 worms (V2). At the end of the composting process, V1, V2 composts and the poultry manure (PM) were applied at rates of 4, 5 and 6 t∙ha−1 in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Soil samples were collected before and after the experiment and analyzed. The main results revealed that at the end of the composting process, there was a progressive improvement in the physico-chemical properties of V1 and V2 composts. In particular, the C/N ratio, phosphorus (P) and total nitrogen (TN) initially at 16.49 ± 0.42 (V1, V2), 21.06 ± 0.07 mg∙kg−1 (V1, V2), 0.76% ± 0.08% (V1, V2) respectively, increased after 60 days to 12.40 ± 0.41 (V1), 9.74 ± 0.28 (V2) for C/N, 21.94 ± 0.63 mg∙kg−1 (V1) and 22.04 ± 0.04 mg∙kg−1 (V2) for P, 0.96% ± 0.0% (V1) and 1.22 ± 0.04 (V2) for TN. The application of 6 t∙ha−1of PM had the greatest influence on the diameter and weight of the flower heads (27.16 ± 4.01 t∙ha−1 and 230.83 ± 2.64 t∙ha−1), while 4 t∙ha−1 of V2 gave the tallest sunflower plants (110.07 ± 73.28 cm) as well as the diameter at the crown (19.30 ± 9.07 cm). However, CEC was most influenced by 4 t∙ha−1 of V1, while 4 t∙ha−1 of PM had the greatest effect on organic carbon and phosphorus. The accumulation of growth-promoting antibiotic residues in animal products and the resistance developed by bacteria in poultry farms has led to a search for natural compounds derived from plants. This study was designed to promote the production performance of broiler chickens using fresh Cupressus sempervirens leaves infusion. Fresh Cupressus sempervirens leaves were harvested, washed, chopped and ground to a paste using a blender and fermented for three days in a closed container at a rate of 500 g/L of water. The solution obtained was filtered and added at the rate of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 ml/L of drinking water. The chickens fed on the graded level of the solution were compared to a control ration without an additive and positive control group supplemented with 1 g antibiotic/kg feed. At the finisher phase and throughout the study period, water intake increased significantly (P 0.05) affected by the inclusion of Cupressus sempervirens infusion. Haematological parameters significantly (P < 0.05) increase independently of the rate of incorporation of the infusion into the drinking water, with the exception of RBCs, MCHT and PCT. Serum content in total protein, globulins, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly (P < 0.05) high with 8 and 10 ml Cupressus sempervirens infusion/litre drinking water as compared to all other treatments. AST, ALT, urea, creatine, albumin, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were not significantly affected. The lactic acid bacteria load increased significantly (P E. coli and salmonella counts decreased significantly (P < 0.05)

Growth Performance of Butcher’s Pigs Fed on Diets Made from the Ruminal Contents of Bovine Animals

Both quantitatively and qualitatively, underfeeding materialized by underconsumption of meat remains one of the things most felt in Africa. To make up for this deficit, emphasis is placed on the production of short-cycle animals such as poultry, rabbits and pork. Among these animals, pig plays a very important socio-economic role in the life of local populations. Its meat is required in various ceremonies such as the dowry and funerals. For this purpose, twenty four males cross piglets with Large White × Landrace × Duroc × Pietrain phenotypic traits, aged between 58 and 62 days and having an average weight of 9.978 ± 1.11 kg were used to evaluate the influence of graded levels of bovine rumen content on the growth performances of grower finisher pigs. The piglets were submitted to 4 treatments, housed in pairs and fed ad libitum with a diet containing 0, 5%, 10% and 20% bovine rumen content. The trial which lasted for 18 weeks was carried out at the Teaching and Research Farm of the University of Dschang. The results showed that drying process destroyed most microbes found in the rumen content. These results also showed that the incorporation of bovine rumen content in diets had no significant (p > 0.05) effect on feed conversion ratio efficiency. However, feed intake, body weight and body weight gain were significantly higher in pigs fed with a diet (R5) containing 5% of bovine rumen content. Feed cost per kg of live body weight was significantly (p 20 diet compared to the animals receiving the control diet which was lower than that of the other two diets (R0) and (R5) but comparable with animals fed diet R10. The analysis of the carcass showed that increasing incorporation level of bovine rumen content in the diet reduces abdominal fat and back fat thickness. Energy storage, such as lead acid batteries, is necessary for renewable energy sources’ autonomy because of their intermittent nature, which makes them more frequently used than traditional energy sources to reduce operating costs. The battery storage system has to be monitored and managed to prevent serious problems such as battery overcharging, over-discharging, overheating, battery unbalancing, thermal runaway, and fire dangers. For voltage balancing between batteries in the pack throughout the charging period and the SOC estimate, a modified lossless switching mechanism is used in this research’s suggested battery management system. The OCV state of charge calculation, in the beginning, was used in conjunction with the coulomb counting approach to estimate the SOC. The results reveal that correlation factor K has an average value of 0.3 volts when VM ≥ 12 V and an average value of 0.825 when VM ≤ 12 V. The battery monitoring system revealed that voltage balancing was accomplished during the charging process in park one after 80 seconds with a SOC difference of 1.4% between Batteries 1 and 2. On the other hand, the system estimates the state of charge during the discharging process in two packs, with a maximum DOD of 10.8 V for all batteries. The project’s objectives were met since the BMS estimated SOC and achieved voltage balance.

Effects of tillage, fallow and burning on selected properties and fertility status of Andosols in the Mounts Bambouto, West Cameroon

To assess the impact of land use on the Andosol fertility, changes in chemical and physical properties affecting soil quality were monitored on Andosols from Mount Bambouto submitted to four different land use and management systems: natural cover, tillage, burning and fallow. In comparison with the natural cover, tillage reduces Andosol OC (6.5 to 4.8%), total N (4.51 to 2.95‰), CEC (22.0 to 20.9 ***–1) and the abundance of soil macro-aggregates expressed by the water stable aggregates (WSA) varies from 53.8 to 12.0%;and increases the bulk density (0.69 to 1.09 ***–3) and the sum of exchangeable cations (3.58 to 4.84 ***–1). Burning also reduces Andosol OC (6.5 to 0.8%), total N (4.51 to 0.95‰) and CEC (22.0 to 10.2 ***–1), but increases soil pH (4.62 to 6.54), the sum of exchangeable cations (3.58 to 5.74 ***–1) and the abundance of soil macroaggregates (WSA: 38.2 to 57.0%). In comparison with tillage, fallow increases Andosol OC (4.8 to 6.5%), total N (2.95 to 5.04‰), CEC (18.0 to 21.6 ***–1), the sum of exchangeable cations (3.58 to 5.05 ***–1) and the abundance of soil macroaggregates (WSA: 12.0 to 48.8%). Globally, the tillage management deteriorates Andosol chemical and physical properties affecting fertility, whereas the fallow management restores them. The burning management also improves some Andosol chemical and physical properties affecting quality, but it won’t last long.

Objective:To explore the immunomodulatory,anti-inflammatory,anti-oxidant and anti-arthritic activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii stem ***:For in vitro assays,the production of reactive oxygen species(chemiluminescence technique),the proliferation of T cells(liquid scintillation counter method),as well as the inhibition of cyclooxygenase,lipoxygenase,protein denaturation,and free radicals[DPPH,ABTS and nitric oxide(NO)inhibition methods]were *** in vivo assays,a polyarthritis model was induced by complete Freund’s adjuvant in *** aqueous and methanolic extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii stem bark were administered orally at 150 and 300 mg/*** 28 days of treatment,the total blood was taken to quantify the hematological parameters and the serum was used to evaluate the biochemical parameters(alanine aminotransferase,aspartate transaminase,phenylalnine ammonialyase,and proteins)and oxidative stress parameters(malondialdehyde,catalase,superoxide dismutase,glutathione and NO),and then the knee joint was removed for histological ***:The extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii significantly reduced the production of intra-and extracellular reactive oxygen species and decreased T cell *** had an inhibitory effect on cyclooxygenase,lipoxygenase,and protein denaturation,and both extracts had antioxidant capacity on DPPH,ABTS and *** extracts alleviated joint inflammation and pain sensitivity after complete Freund’s adjuvant injection,reduced alanine aminotransferase,aspartate transaminase,alkaline phosphatase,NO and malondialdehyde levels,increased protein concentration,superoxide dismutase,catalase and glutathione activity,and restored the cytoarchitecture of the joint after complete Freund’s adjuvant ***:The aqueous and methanolic extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii have immunomodulatory,anti-inflammatory,anti-oxidant and anti-arthritic properties.

Market gardening, in the swampy lowlands of the Dschangcity, plays an important role in terms of providing employment, and supply the city with fresh products. However, waterborne diseases, which occur in the city, are both attributed to the bad quality of drinking water and sanitation practices. This work aims to characterize watering waters of crop, to assess the health risks associated with the use of these waters. Water from eleven streams and five wells used to irrigate crops were sampled and analyzed once a week for a month. Analyses focused on physico-chemical parameters (temperature, suspended matter, pH, electrical conductivity, COD, BOD5, NO-3 , Al, Fe, Cu, Ni), parasitological (helminthes eggs) and bacteriological (total coliforms, fecal coliforms, fecal streptococcus). The results show that, the physico-chemical quality of well waters generally approaches the WHO standards of crop watering water. The physico-chemical of streams waters and bacteriological quality of wells and streams waters are bad, according to WHO guide. These bad quality waters could contaminate crops, some of which are eaten raw, which is surely a cause of the outbreak of waterborne diseases in the city. The waters from streams are more affected. The pretreatment of the water before use for irrigation of vegetables is highly recommended.
