Water-soluble-template-derived nanoscale silicon nano- flake and nano-rod morphologies： Stable architectures for lithium-ion battery anodes

Earth abundant and economical rock salt （NaC1） particles of different sizes （〈3 μm and 5-20 μm） prepared by high energy mechanical milling were used as water-soluble templates for generation of Si with novel nanoscale architectures via low pressure chemical vapor deposition （LPCVD）. Si nanoflakes （SiNF） comprising largely amorphous Si （a-Si） with a small volume fraction of nanocrystalline Si （nc-Si）, and Si nanorods （SiNR） composed of a larger volume fraction of crystalline Si （c-Si） and a small volume fraction of a-Si resulted from modification of the NaCI crystals. SiNF yielded first-cycle discharge and charge capacities of -2,830 and 2,175 mAh.g-1, respective134 at a current rate of 50 mA.g-1 with a first-cycle irreversible loss （FIR loss） of -15%-20%. SiNR displayed first-cycle discharge and charge capacities of -2,980 and -2,500 mAh-g-1, respectively, at a current rate of 50 mA-g-1 with an FIR loss of -12%-15%. However, at a current rate of 1 A.g-1, SiNF exhibited a stable discharge capacity of -810 mAh-g-1 at the end of 250 cycles with a fade rate of -0.11% loss per cycle, while SiNR showed a stable specific discharge capacity of -740 mAh.g-1 with a fade rate of -0.23% loss per cycle. The morphology of the nanostructures and compositions of the different phases/phase of Si influence the performance of SiNF and SINK, making them attractive anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Biloma: An unusual complication in a patient with pancreatic cancer

The term biloma describes an encapsulated collection of bile within the abdomen, usually secondary to bile duct disruption. The commonest causes reported in the literature are iatrogenic （secondary to hepatobUiary surgery）, trauma or complications due to choledocho- lithiasis. A few cases have been reported as complica- tions of cholangiocarcinoma or acute cholecystitis. We report the case of a 64-year-old man initially diagnosed with a non-obstructive malignancy of the pancreas, who developed a spontaneous intrahepatic biloma 8 mo later. This was identified following a 1-wk history of fever, rigors and icterus. The biloma was identified on computed tomography and subsequently drained under ultrasound guidance. Forty-eight hours later, a stent was inserted endoscopically into his common bile duct and he made an uneventful in-hospital recovery. We believe this is the first documented case of spontaneous intrahepatic biloma to occur secondary to pancreatic malignancy.

Preliminary Clinical Outcomes after Implantation of Newer-Generation Biodegradable Polymer-Coated Everolimus-Eluting Stent in “Real-World” Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

Background and Objective: In the contemporary practice, the use of drug-eluting stents is still associated with low mortality benefits, restenosis and stent thrombosis. To address these issues, newer generation, thin-strut, biodegradable polymer coated stents has been designed. Thus, the aim of the study is to assess the safety and clinical performance of the Everoflex (Sahajanand Medical Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Surat, India), a newer generation biodegradable polymer coated everolimus-eluting stent, in unselected “real-world” patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: It is a multicentre, retrospective, non-randomized, single-arm study enrolling all the consecutive patients who underwent implantation with the Everoflex for coronary artery disease from April 2014 to March 2016. The primary end-point of the study is 30-day major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) rate, which consists of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, target lesion revascularization and target vessel revascularization. Stent thrombosis was also analyzed and reported. Results: A total of 340 patients were intervened successfully with 395 everolimus eluting stents (1.3 ± 0.6 stents per patient). Out of total patients (58.7 ± 10.5 years), 77.9% were male and comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension were observed in 31.2% and 35.3% patients, respectively. According to ACC/AHA classification, there were 34.4% type B lesions and 53.2% type C lesions, indicating a higher proportion of complexity involved. Moreover, 57.9% patients had multivessel disease and there were 15.4% total occlusions. At 30 days, follow-up was completed in 100% patients. The MACE was found to be 1.5%, which is a composite of 1.2% cardiac death and 0.3% target lesion revascularization. Stent thrombosis at 30 days was found to be 0.3%. Conclusion: The low incidence of MACE and stent thrombosis clearly depicts excellent safety and clinical performance of the Everoflex in unselected real world patients with coronary arter

Biogeographical and palaeoclimate appraisal of mangrove vegetation in South Asia and Southeast Asia in the post Himalayan uplift scenario

Fossil evidence indicates that mangrove species have had their first appearance in the Late Cretaceous(70 65 Ma) and they have evolved around the Tethys seaway after the plate tectonics and the movement of the continents when Tethys Sea was fast closing as the massive continental fragments continued to shift and jostle across the globe. The oldest geological record of Acrostichum and Nypa palm offers good examples as these species prefer low-salinity requirements and have wide ecological tolerance. Such environmental and habitat preferences must have been the probable reason for their initial adaptation to mangrove habitat and a wider distribution. The open sea link must have also provided enough coastal areas for the establishment of mangrove ecosystem and subsequent spreading of the mangroves into newer areas by Early to Middle Eocene(ca 50–40 Ma). However, the mangroves started acquiring the present geographical positions towards OligoceneMiddle Miocene period. The fossil record and the modern analogues of Kandelia, Nypa and Pelliciera indicate that their biogeographical preferences have been shifted due to oceanic reorganization wherein the latter is now confined only to Atlantic East Pacific mangrove realm despite it was earlier widespread in the Tethys Sea. Although Rhizophora and Avicennia differ only at the species level and common occurrence of Acrostichum aureum, the present mangrove distribution shows the contrast in the biogeography of many genera due to geomorphic barriers and climatic changes. The Himalayan uplift and establishment of Asian summer monsoon system towards Late Neogene has also affected the coastal dynamics considerably which in turn modified the distribution of mangrove vegetation of the Indian subcontinent. The loss of sensitive habitats, disjunct distribution of a few species and local extinction of significant taxa has affected the overall biogeography of mangroves in South and SE Asia.

Experimental investigations of transient pressure variations in a high head model Francis turbine during start-up and shutdown

Penetration of the power generated using wind and solar energy to electrical grid network causing several incidents of the grid tripping, power outage, and frequency drooping. This has increased restart （star-stop） cycles of the hydroelectric turbines significantly since grid connected hydroelectric turbines are widely used to manage critical conditions of the grid. Each cycle induces significant stresses due to unsteady pressure loading on the runner blades. The presented work investigates the pressure loading to a high head （ He = 377 m, De = 1.78 m） Francis turbine during start-stop. The measurements were carried out on a scaled model turbine （HM = 12.5 m, DM = 0.349 m）. Total four operating points were considered. At each operating point, three schemes of guide vanes opening and three schemes of guide vanes closing were investigated. The results show that total head variation is up to 9% during start-stop of the turbine. On the runner blade, the maximum pressure amplitudes are about 14 kPa and 16 kPa from the instantaneous mean value of 121 kPa during rapid start-up and shutdown, respectively, which are about 1.5 times larger than that of the slow start-up and shutdown. Moreover, the maximum pressure fluctuations are given at the blade trailing edge.

Soil Carbon and Nitrogen in Response to Perennial Bioenergy Grass, Cover Crop and Nitrogen Fertilization

Cover crop and nitrogen （N） fertilization may maintain soil organic matter under bioenergy perennial grass where removal of aboveground biomass for feedstock to produce cellulosic ethanol can reduce soil quality. We evaluated the effects of cover crops and N fertilization rates on soil organic carbon （C）（SOC）, total N （STN）, ammonium N （NH4-N）, and nitrate N （NO3-N） contents at the 0-5, 5-15, and 15-30 cm depths under perennial bioenergy grass from 2010 to 2014 in the southeastern USA. Treatments included unbalanced combinations of perennial bioenergy grass, energy cane （Saccharum spontaneum L.） or elephant grass （Pennisetum pur- pureum Schumazh.）, cover crop, crimson clover （Trifolium incarnatum L.）, and N fertilization rates （0, 100, and 200 kg N ha-l）. Cover crop biomass and C and N contents were greater in the treatment of energy cane with cover crop and 100 kg N ha-1 than in the treatment of energy cane and elephant grass. The SOC and STN contents at 0-5 and 5-15 cm were 9%-20% greater in the treatments of elephant grass with cover crop and with or without 100 kg N ha-1 than in most of the other treatments. The soil NO3-N content at 0--5 cm was 31%-45% greater in the treatment of energy cane with cover crop and 100 kg N ha-1 than in most of the other treatments. The SOC sequestration increased from 0.1 to 1.0 Mg C ha-1 year-1 and the STN sequestration from 0.03 to 0.11 Mg N ha-1 year-1 from 2010 to 2014 for various treatments and depths. In contrast, the soil NH4-N and NO3-N contents varied among treatments, depths, and years. Soil C and N storages can be enriched and residual NO3-N content can be reduced by using elephant grass with cover crop and with or without N fertilization at a moderate rate.

High-sensitivity simultaneous liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry assay of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel in human plasma

A sensitive and simultaneous liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for quantification of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. The analytes were extracted with methyl-tert-butyl ether： n-hexane （50：50, v/v） solvent mixture, followed by dansyl derivatization. The chromatographic separation was performed on a Kinetex Cla （50 mm × 4.6 mm, 2.6 μm） column with a mobile phase of 0.1% （v/v） formic acid in water and acetonitrile in gradient composition. The mass transitions were monitored in electrospray positive ionization mode. The assay exhibited a linear range of 0.100-20.0 ng/mL for levonorgestrel and 4.00-500 pg/mL for ethinyl estradiol in human plasma. A run time of 9.0 min for each sample made it possible to analyze a throughput of more than 100 samples per day. The validated method has been successfully used to analyze human plasma samples for application in pharmacokinetic and bioequivalence studies.

ResTS: Residual Deep interpretable architecture for plant disease detection

Recently many methods have been induced for plant disease detection by the influence ofDeep Neural Networks in Computer Vision. However, the dearth of transparency in thesetypes of research makes their acquisition in the real-world scenario less approving. We propose an architecture named ResTS (Residual Teacher/Student) that can be used as visualization and a classification technique for diagnosis of the plant disease. ResTS is a tertiaryadaptation of formerly suggested Teacher/Student architecture. ResTS is grounded on aConvolutional Neural Network (CNN) structure that comprises two classifiers (ResTeacherand ResStudent) and a decoder. This architecture trains both the classifiers in a reciprocalmode and the conveyed representation between ResTeacher and ResStudent is used as aproxy to envision the dominant areas in the image for categorization. The experimentshave shown that the proposed structure ResTS (F1 score: 0.991) has surpassed the Teacher/Student architecture (F1 score: 0.972) and can yield finer visualizations of symptomsof the disease. Novel ResTS architecture incorporates the residual connections in all theconstituents and it executes batch normalization after each convolution operation whichis dissimilar to the formerly proposed Teacher/Student architecture for plant disease diagnosis. Residual connections in ResTS help in preserving the gradients and circumvent theproblem of vanishing or exploding gradients. In addition, batch normalization after eachconvolution operation aids in swift convergence and increased reliability. All test resultsare attained on the PlantVillage dataset comprising 54 306 images of 14 crop species.
