The underground disposal of waste arising from the nuclear industry needs constant evaluation in order to improve upon it through minimizing the volume and cost by reducing the amount of glass used without compromising the safety of any leakage from the radioactive waste form. The immobilization of the spent resin (NRW-40) in borosilicate glass was investigated to meet the acceptance criteria for disposal of nuclear waste. The organic mixed bed resin in granular form was used as a waste target. The analysis of surrogate resin doped with radioactive and non-radioactive cesium (Cs) and cobalt (Co) was carried out to investigate their thermal and chemical properties and their compatibility with an alkaline borosilicate glass. The thermal analysis indicates that the structural damage caused by 1 mSv gamma radiation to the radioactive resin has altered its properties in comparison with the non-radioactive resin, same amount of cesium (8.88 wt%) and cobalt (1.88 wt%) were used in both resins. The immobilization of residue shows that the excess sulfur in the residue caused phase crystallization in the final glass matrix. It was found that the volatilization of Cs-137 and Co-60 from the successful radioactive resin-glass matrix (HG-3-IER-500) were more than that in the non-radioactive resin-glass matrix (HG-3-IEX-500). The study demonstrates comprehensive experimental and analytical works and shows that it is possible to minimise the volume of the waste while keeping the required safety levels, however further research needs to be carried out in this area.

Background: Despite awareness about the impact of intermittent claudication (IC) on mobility, balance and quality of life;the underlying pathophysiology and alterations in muscle architecture secondary to the disease are often overlooked. This review aimed to summarize the pathophysiological muscle changes present secondary to IC. Methods: The electronic databases, Medline, EMBASE, Cinahl and AMED, were searched for studies from 1967 to August 2011. Search terms included exercise, intermittent claudication and muscle. Studies about IC which were focused on muscle histology, muscle architecture, blood flow or changes with exercise were included. Results: Of 434 studies identified, 135 unique results were found. Only 78 of these were suitable from abstract review, of which 15 were unobtainable and a further nine were identified from hand-searching references. Studies in animal models demonstrated a predominance of type II muscle fibres and an improvement in animal exercise tolerance secondary to training. Exercise alone was never able to improve distances to that of healthy controls, however a lower limb fistula along with exercise did. Lower limb blood flow was demonstrated to be affected regionally, and most evident during exercise with a prolonged return to normal in patients with IC. At a cellular level, the myocytes metabolism increased in those with IC, but returned to normal post-revascularization. Conclusion: Treatment for claudicants includes either revascularization or exercise. Successful revascularization has demonstrated a return to normal muscle metabolism;the underlying physiological improvement secondary to exercise still requires clarification.

Reducing the Memory Cost of Training Convolutional Neural Networks by CPU Offloading

In recent years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have enabled unprecedented progress on a wide range of computer vision tasks. However, training large CNNs is a resource-intensive task that requires specialized Graphical Processing Units (GPU) and highly optimized implementations to get optimal performance from the hardware. GPU memory is a major bottleneck of the CNN training procedure, limiting the size of both inputs and model architectures. In this paper, we propose to alleviate this memory bottleneck by leveraging an under-utilized resource of modern systems: the device to host bandwidth. Our method, termed CPU offloading, works by transferring hidden activations to the CPU upon computation, in order to free GPU memory for upstream layer computations during the forward pass. These activations are then transferred back to the GPU as needed by the gradient computations of the backward pass. The key challenge to our method is to efficiently overlap data transfers and computations in order to minimize wall time overheads induced by the additional data transfers. On a typical work station with a Nvidia Titan X GPU, we show that our method compares favorably to gradient checkpointing as we are able to reduce the memory consumption of training a VGG19 model by 35% with a minimal additional wall time overhead of 21%. Further experiments detail the impact of the different optimization tricks we propose. Our method is orthogonal to other techniques for memory reduction such as quantization and sparsification so that they can easily be combined for further optimizations.

被动大陆边缘依据地貌可分为平直型与S型,前人对其控制作用的研究多集中在三角洲发育与深水沉积物输入量2个方面,而对于峡谷和海底扇的影响以及坡折的作用仍然缺乏定量化的系统研究。采用沉积正演方法,研究S型与平直型被动大陆边缘上的沉积体系特征的异同点,系统对比了沉积体系分布、沉积物配置关系、层序格架发育、演化特征,以及河流和浊积水道特征。研究表明,S型边缘三角洲欠发育,进积为主,加积为辅,峡谷内可见明显凹岸侵蚀,海底扇为沉积物主要卸载区域,总体受海平面升降影响小;而平直型边缘三角洲高度发育,加积为主,进积为辅,峡谷中上部被三角洲沉积覆盖,海底扇几乎不发育,总体受海平面升降影响大。进一步研究表明,陆架坡折导致沉积物在陆架之上贮存少,向深水区搬运多,而陆坡坡折导致沉积物在陆坡上贮存少,在峡谷口大量卸载。
