Effect of rock bolt support mechanism on tunnel deformation in jointed rockmass: A numerical approach

A parametric study was conducted to determine the influence of different bolt parameters(bolt length and diameter)on the maximum induced boundary displacements in jointed rockmass,using a numerical method based on finite element *** different types of jointed systems(Type A,Type B,and Type C)were considered and *** A displays normal joint closure,Type B demonstrates a combination of normal and shear joint closure,and in Type C,the majority of the joint is loaded in shear *** ground surface settlement profiles for these three joint systems,under unsupported conditions,are presented in this *** the same rockmass properties,the cases in Type A and Type B exhibit the maximum and minimum settlement,*** each joint type,the effect of variable bolt parameters on the tunnel boundary is studied in terms of the total *** simulation results confirm that an increase in the bolt length does not significantly reduce the boundary displacement,whereas an increase in the bolt diameter substantially reduces the tunnel boundary displacement.

Embelia ribes Burm f., also known as Vidanga or Baibidanga, belonging to the family of Myrsinaceae, is an important but vulnerable medicinal woody climber. Recent survey and observations of E. ribes in different aspects like distribution, population structure, growth habit, climate, natural regeneration and seedling ecology in Karnataka have been thoroughly discussed. This is the first report on artificial regeneration through seeds of diverse origins in ex-situ and in situ conditions and field planting of them in its natural environment. Field planting of in vitro and nursery raised seedlings showed better field performance in terms of survival and growth in its natural growing areas only. Current studies and observations have shown that this species has low ecological gradient and is a “habitat specialist”. E. ribes being a threatened species with small populations coupled with low ecological gradient and virtually no natural regeneration, a modified approach of quasi in situ conservation where in in-situ raising of seedlings of diverse origin with an aim to enrich the diversity of existing population was attempted with considerable success.

Development of Emission Factors for Quantification of Blasting Dust at Surface

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) and environmental management plan (EMP) is a statutory requirement for execution of new mining projects or for expansion of the operating projects. For this purpose, quantification of blasting dust emission is required. This can be done by developing emission factors for blasting. The concept is similar to that of specific charge in blasting. For mining operations other than blasting, quantification of dust can be done using emis- sion factors. Emission estimation techniques are very limited for blasting. In this study, the emission factors were de- veloped by carrying out a detailed field study at one of the largest opencast coal mines of India in all four seasons. Da- ta on atmospheric and meteorological conditions were generated by installing sodar and automatic weather station at the mine site. Respirable dust samplers were installed for monitoring of the dust emitted during coal or overburden bench blasting. Emission factors for dust concentrations were developed in gram per cubic meter of rock excavated. The developed emission factors were used to estimate dust emissions for adjacent mines due to similarity in mining and meteorological conditions. Seasonal variations in moisture contents in benches, where dust was monitored, indicated the lowest emission factors in monsoon due to high moisture in the bench materials. Similar field studies were also conducted at another coalfield of India for two seasons. It was found that the emission factors are site-specific.

Slope Stability Assessment of Saptashrungi Gad Temple, Vani, Nashik, Maharashtra, India—A Numerical Approach

The worship places in India are usually situated in and around the hilly regions and/or mountainous area and a number of devotees used to visit the holy places in every area for worship. The stability slopes upon which these worship places are located in the hilly and mountainous region are always a major concern. Moreover, heavy precipitation, weathering conditions, seismic disturbances and human activities could cause problem to the stability of such slopes. The effect of slope instability could cause delay in traffic, loss of life of the devotees at pilgrim sites and the loss of the properties. The Saptashrungi gad temple (SGT) situated on basaltic hills belongs to Deccan volcanic and is one among the 51 Shakti Peeths and the most holy place for pilgrims. In this research, the slope stability analysis at SGT hill is assessed using Phase 2, a finite element program along the two parikrama paths: Parikrama Path 1 (or the Badi Parikrama Path “BPP”), and Parikrama Path 2 (or the Chhoti Parikrama Path “CPP”). On the basis of extensive field work, topographic survey, complex geology, orientations of joint sets, hill slope faces and geotechnical conditions, the study area has been divided into eight zones (Zone#01 to Zone#08), and eighteen topographic profiles (AA′ to RR′) are taken from these eight zones for detailed slope stability analysis. The analysis helps to identify the potentially vulnerable slope and zone of instability.

Establishment of an animal model with hypoxic hepatitis
