Mass production of black soldier fly,Hermetia illucens(L.)(Diptera:Stra-tiomyidae),larvae results in massive heat generation,which impacts facility management,waste conversion,and larval *** tested daily substrate temperatures with dif-ferent population densities(i.e.,0,500,1000,5000,and 10000 larvae/pan),different pop-ulation sizes(i.e.,166,1000,and 10000 larvae at a fixed feed ratio)and air temperatures(i.e.,20 and 30℃)on various production *** of shifting larvae from 30 to 20℃on either day 9 or 11 were also *** activity increased substrate tem-peratures significantly(i.e.,at least 10℃above air temperatures).Low air temperature favored growth with the higher population sizes while high temperature favored growth with low population *** greatest average individual larval weights(e.g.,0.126 and 0.124 g)and feed conversion ratios(e.g.,1.92 and 2.08 g/g)were recorded for either 10000 larvae reared at 20℃or 100 larvae reared at 30 *** temperatures from high(30℃)to low(20℃)in between(~10-d-old larvae)impacted larval production weights(16%increases)and feed conversion ratios(increased 14%).Facilities should consider the impact of larval density,population size,and air temperature during black soldier fly mass production as these factors impact overall larval production.

Self-cleaning surfaces are desirable in many engineering applications where low energy consumption,reusability and sustainability are of the biggest *** by the gecko’s unique ’dry selfcleaning’ hierarchical *** we fabricated artificial Fe304/PDMS composites that show robust self-cleaning *** enhanced adhesion performance is attributable to the decrease of PDMS polymerization degree and the load transfer between PDMS matrix and Fe304 magnetic *** self-cleaning surfaces showed up to 24.3% self-cleaning rate with as few as 4 *** result indicated that the changing of cross linking between Fe304 and PDMS is the main reason for the enhanced self-cleaning *** work reveals an alternative route of making high-performance self-cleaning smart surfaces that are applicable in the textile industry,robotic locomotion/gripping technology,outerspace explorations and tissue engineering.

Aims Rising concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide([CO_(2)])may influence forest successional development and species composition of understory plant communities by altering biomass production of plant species of functional ***,we describe how elevated[CO_(2)](eCO_(2))affects aboveground biomass within the understory community of a temperate deciduous forest at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory sweetgum(Liquidambar styraciflua)free-air carbon dioxide enrichment(FACe)facility in eastern Tennessee,*** asked if(i)CO_(2)enrichment affected total understory biomass and(ii)whether total biomass responses could be explained by changes in understory species composition or changes in relative abundance of functional groups through *** and methods The FACe experiment started in 1998 with three rings receiving ambient[CO_(2)](aCO_(2))and two rings receiving eCO_(2).From 2001 to 2003,we estimated species-specific,woody versus herbaceous and total aboveground biomass by harvesting four 130.5-m subplots within the established understory plant community in each FACe *** 2008,we estimated herbaceous biomass as previously but used allometric relationships to estimate woody biomass across two 535-m quadrats in each FACe *** findings Across years,aboveground biomass of the understory community was on average 25%greater in eCO_(2)than in aCO_(2)*** could not detect differences in plant species composition between aCO_(2)and eCO_(2)***,we did observe shifts in the relative abundance of plant functional groups,which reflect important structural changes in the understory *** 2001-03,little of the understory biomass was in woody species;herbaceous species made up 94%of the total understory biomass across[CO_(2)]*** time,woody species increased in importance,mostly in eCO_(2),and in 2008,the contribution of herbaceous species to total understory biomass was 61%in aCO_(2)and only 33%in eCO_(2)***

As hypoxic conditions spread in our oceans,indices that quickly and efficiently assess oxygen content in sediment pore water,and habitat quality are increasingly becoming *** to the apparent redox potential discontinuity(aRPD) in sediment is one such index;however,the relationship between aRPD depth and oxygen content is still *** quantified oxygen content in sediment pore water with a dissolved oxygen(DO) probe,utilizing luminescent technology,to determine how DO concentration varies with depth in the sediment,and with position relative to the aRPD(above versus below) on an intertidal mudflat in the Bay of Fundy,*** on generalized linear regression models,we found that depth in the sediment was a poor predictor of pore water DO concentration,while position in the sediment relative to the aRPD was a good ***,sediment above the aRPD had higher DO content than sediment *** maintain that aRPD depth is a good measure of relative oxygen content in sediment pore water,as well as habitat ***,we recommend caution as the factors that influence aRPD depth arc numerous and variable;therefore,the relationship between aRPD depth and DO content should be experimentally confirmed in any system of interest before aRPD depth is used as an indicator.

Stochastic walk-on-spheres(WOS)algorithms for solving the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation(LPBe)provide several attractive features not available in traditional deterministic solvers:Gaussian error bars can be computed easily,the algorithm is readily parallelized and requires minimal memory and multiple solvent environments can be accounted for by reweighting ***,previouslyreported computational times of these Monte Carlo methods were not competitive with existing deterministic numerical *** present paper demonstrates a series of numerical optimizations that collectively make the computational time of these Monte Carlo LPBe solvers competitive with deterministic *** optimization techniques used are to ensure that each atom’s contribution to the variance of the electrostatic solvation free energy is the same,to optimize the bias-generating parameters in the algorithm and to use an epsilon-approximate rather than exact nearest-neighbor search when determining the size of the next step in the Brownian motion when outside the molecule.
