Purpose To date,no study has investigated the extent to which sleep-wake behaviour(SWB)influences match performance in junior tennis *** study aimed to assess the influence of SWB for the week and night before on match performance,particularly match analytics and *** This study recruited 10 junior state grade tennis players who wore an actigraphy device and completed a sleep diary for the week before their match on two separate occasions throughout their competition *** wore a global positioning system device to track their movement during matches,and an experienced tennis coach recorded players'match *** This study showed that the sleep fragmentation index was significantly lower the week before matches in females who had won than those who had ***,the sleep fragmentation index was significantly lower the night before a given match than the week *** sleep fragmentation index and sleep latency significantly influenced match performance in junior tennis *** percentage of second serves points won differed between match wins and losses for male players,while winners and forced errors differed for female *** These findings provide a detailed profile of tennis match play in junior state grade *** individual differences,reduced restlessness the night before a match coincides with increased match performance.

Mixed-Vehicular Aggregated Transportation Network Design Considering En-route Recharge Service Provision for Electric Vehicles

This paper addresses the transportation network design problem （NDP） wherein the dis- tance limit and en-route recharge of electric vehicles are taken into account. Specifically, in this work, the network design problem aims to select the optimal planning policy from a set of infrastructure design scenarios considering both road expansions and charging station allocations under a specified construction budget. The user-equilibrium mixed-vehicular traffic assignment problem with en-route recharge （MVTAP-ER） is formulated into a novel convex optimization model and extended to a newly developed bi-level program of the aggregated NDP integrating recharge facility allocation （NDP-RFA）. In the algorithmic framework, a convex optimization technique and a tailored CA are adopted for, respectively, solving the subproblem MVTAP-ER and the primal problem NDP-RFA. Systematic ex- periments are conducted to test the efficacy of the proposed approaches. The results highlight the impacts of distance limits and budget levels on the project selection and evaluation, and the benefits of considering both road improvement policy and recharge service provision as compared to accounting for the latter only. The results also report that the two design objectives, to respectively minimize the total system travel time and vehicle miles travelled, are conflicting for certain scenarios.

Tudor and its domains: germ cell formation from a Tudor perspective

In many metazoan species, germ cell formation requires the germ plasm, a specialized cytoplasm which often con-tains electron dense structures. Genes required for germ cell formation in Drosophila have been isolated predominantlyin screens for maternal-effect mutations. One such gene is tudor (tud); without proper tud function germ cell formationdoes not occur. Unlike other genes involved in Drosophila germ cell specification tud is dispensable for other somaticfunctions such as abdominal patterning. It is not known how TUD contributes at a molecular level to germ cell forma-tion but in tud mutants, polar granule formation is severely compromised, and mitochondrially encoded ribosomal RNAsdo not localize to the polar granule. TUD is composed of 11 repeats of the protein motif called the Tudor domain. Thereare similar proteins to TUD in the germ line of other metazoan species including mice. Probable vertebrate orthologuesof Drosophila genes involved in germ cell specification will be discussed.

Creation and Evaluation of a Multi-sensory Virtual Assembly Environment

The multi-modal information presentation, integrated into the virtual environment （VE）, has potential for stimulating different senses, improving the user＇s impression of immersion, and increasing the amount of information that is accepted and processed by the user＇s perception system. The increase of the useful feedback information may reduce the user＇s cognitive load, thus enhancing the user＇s efficiency and performance while interacting with VEs. This paper presents our creation of a multi-sensory virtual assembly environment （VAE） and the evaluation of the effects of multi-sensory feedback on the usability. The VAE brings together complex technologies such as constraint-based assembly simulation, optical motion tracking technology, and real-time 3D sound generation technology around a virtual reality workbench and a common software platform. The usability evaluation is in terms of its three attributes： efficiency of use, user satisfaction, and reliability. These are addressed by using task completion times （TCTs）, questionnaires, and human performance error rates （HPERs）, respectively. Two assembly tasks have been used to perform the experiments, using sixteen participants. The outcomes showed that the multi-sensory feedback could improve the usability. They also indicated that the integrated feedback offered better usability than either feedback used in isolation. Most participants preferred the integrated feedback to either feedback （visual or auditory） or no feedback. The participants＇ comments demonstrated that nonrealistic or inappropriate feedback had negative effects on the usability, and easily made them feel frustrated. The possible reasons behind the outcomes are also analysed by using a unifying human computer interaction framework. The implications, concluded from the outcomes of this work, can serve as useful guidelines for improving VE system design and implementation.

Online optimal control of nonlinear discrete-time systems using approximate dynamic programming

In this paper,the optimal control of a class of general affine nonlinear discrete-time(DT) systems is undertaken by solving the Hamilton Jacobi-Bellman(HJB) equation online and forward in *** proposed approach,referred normally as adaptive or approximate dynamic programming(ADP),uses online approximators(OLAs) to solve the infinite horizon optimal regulation and tracking control problems for affine nonlinear DT systems in the presence of unknown internal *** the regulation and tracking controllers are designed using OLAs to obtain the optimal feedback control signal and its associated cost ***,the tracking controller design entails a feedforward portion that is derived and approximated using an additional OLA for steady state *** update laws for tuning the unknown parameters of the OLAs online are *** techniques are used to show that all signals are uniformly ultimately bounded and that the approximated control signals approach the optimal control inputs with small bounded *** the absence of OLA reconstruction errors,an optimal control is *** results verify that all OLA parameter estimates remain bounded,and the proposed OLA-based optimal control scheme tunes itself to reduce the cost HJB equation.

Flammability risk assessment for oil spill response operations

Immediately following a spill at sea, released oil ranging from diesel to light crude and diluted bitumen, will initially weather through evaporation, resulting in an elevated concentration of light hydrocarbons in the air. As part of oil spill response operations, first responders use hand-held devices to monitor airborne concent- rations when approaching a spill. The feasibility of using numerical modelling as an additional tool to assess potential flammability and plan response operations in the spill area was explored in this study. The Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) is defined as the minimum concentration of a gas in air, in this case a mixture of evaporated hydrocarbons, which can produce a flash fire in the presence of an ignition source. This ignition source could be triggered by the vessel itself or by spill response operations. A framework was put into place, utilizing a three- dimensional hydrodynamic model (H3D), an oil spill model (SPILLCALC), and an air dispersion model (CALPUFF) to assess the risk of possible ignition of the hydrocarbon vapour in the event of a spill. The study looked at a hypothetical credible worst case tanker spill (16 500 m3) of diluted bitumen (cold lake winter blend) occurring at Arachne Reef in Haro Strait, British Columbia, Canada. SPILLCALC provided one-minute averaged vapour fluxes from the water surface for each of 17 modelled pseudo-components which were used as inputs to CALPUFF. Using the predicted airborne concentrations of each pseudo-component, time-scaled to one-second averages, the flammability potential in the immediate spill area was determined at each grid point using Le Chatelier’s mixing equation. The approach describe here was developed as a proof of concept, and could be established as a real-time system, bringing valuable information in addition to hand-held devices during a spill response, or during a response exercise. A comparison of base running and sliding techniques in collegiate baseball with implications for sliding into first base

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare 4 techniques for arrival at a base after sprinting maximally to reach it: sliding head-first, sliding feet-first, running through the base without slowing, and stopping on the base. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine any advantage there may be to diving into first base to arrive sooner than running through the ***: Two high-definition video cameras were used to capture 3-dimensional kinematics of sliding techniques of 9 intercollegiate baseball players. Another video camera was used to time runs from first base to second in 4 counterbalanced conditions: running through the base, sliding head-first, sliding feet-first, and running to a stop. Mathematical modeling was used to simulate diving to first base such that the slide would begin when the hand touches the ***: Based upon overall results, the quickest way to the base is by running through it, followed by head-first, feet-first, and running to a ***: There was a non-significant trend toward an advantage for diving into first base over running through it, but more research is needed,and even if the advantage is real, the risks of executing this technique probably outweigh the miniscule gain.
