Assessment of the Drafting Quality of Request Forms Submitted to the Malaria and Parasitology Units at the Institut Pasteur de Cote d’Ivoire

Biological tests provide information on the medical analysis requested by both the patient and the prescriber. It is a communication link between the prescriber and the laboratory staff. The lack of some information on request forms not only affects the drafting quality of the test and patient care, but could also make thousands of data produced by healthcare centers unusable. The aim of this study was to assess the drafting quality of request forms submitted to the Malaria and Parasitology Units at the Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire. Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study to assess the drafting quality of request forms of various prescribers received at the Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire. This study was conducted at the Malaria and Parasitology Units, department of Parasitology and Mycology (Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire), from 6th December 2020 to 6th December 2021. The information on each request forms was recorded on a data collection form designed for this purpose. Each data collection form corresponds to a request forms and each test to a patient. Results: Out of a total of 1990 request forms received, the patient’s age and sex were missing on 18% and 26.8% of the tests respectively. More than half (51.80%) of request forms did not indicate the patient’s place of residence. Clinical information was not provided on 45.90% of the tests. Prescribers omitting their signatures were 51%, stamps were 50.3% and contacts were 71.2%. Only 5.4% of request forms were of good drafting quality. Providing all the required information on the forms could facilitate the use and analysis of data and samples.

Intracranial Calcified Extradural Hematoma about a Case

Introduction: Extradural hematoma is a common pathology in our department. The natural history of small-volume hematoma is usually towards resorption. In rare cases, the hematoma calcifies and compresses the brain. We report an extradural hematoma in a 15-year-old boy who had a road traffic accident on February 2011. The brain CT-scan performed the following day revealed a small right frontal extradural hematoma. During hospitalization, he had a fever of 40 degrees with convulsions and the blood culture isolated the coagulase-negative staphylococci and Group D streptococci. When his conscience was restored, hemiparesis and dysarthria were observed. The control brain CT-scan performed 2 weeks after the trauma showed early resorption of the hematoma. Two months after the trauma, the brain CT-scan showed calcification of the hematoma. He underwent surgery in April 2011 to remove the calcification. The sequels were hemiparesis and posttraumatic epilepsy. Conclusion: The evolution of a small non-operated extradural hematoma can be done towards calcification thus requiring surgery.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with the Anxio-Depressive Symptoms of the Families of Patients in Intensive Care Unit at Gabriel toure University Hospital, Bamako, Mali

Introduction: Hospitalization in intensive care is a source of stress and anxiety for close to the patients. Anxio-depressive symptoms appear to be common in intensive care and their prevalence is poorly evaluated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of anxio-depressive symptoms in families. Materials and method: Observational prospective study in families of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit for a period of 5 months. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were measured using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) during hospitalization. Anxiety and depression were defined by a score greater than 10. Factors associated with the onset of anxious-depressive symptoms were sought. The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in close relatives was measured by the Impact Event Scale-Revised scale (IES-R). Results: A total of 107 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit, of which 49 families agreed to participate in our study. Overall mortality was 32.2% during this period. Fifty-eight (58) patients were not included for the following reasons: death or hospitalization of less than 48 hours, refusal of families, institution, and lack of parents speaking French. Forty-nine (49) relatives completed the HADS questionnaire. Forty-three families completed the IES-R questionnaire, a return rate of 87.7%. The prevalence of anxiety was 61.2% among parents in early hospitalization. The level of anxiety was significantly associated with male parents (p = 0.035) and those with lower education (p = 0.046). The prevalence of depressive symptoms in parents was evaluated 53% at D3. Education level (p = 0.048) and male parents (p = 0.048) appeared to be a significant depression factor. The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder was 55.1% among the relatives of the patients. Introduction: During childbirth by Caesarean, several types of anesthesia can be used. The Caesarean, the most practiced surgical delivery technique in obstetrics, has a risk for complications for both the pregnant women and newborns. Objective: To evaluate the importance of the complications due to Caesarean in the Teaching hospital Gabriel Toure. Patient and Methods: We conducted a cross sectional survey in the departments of intensive care unit and gyneco-obstetric from January to August 2017 in the University hospital Gabriel Touré of Bamako. Our study population was pregnant women who gave birth to children by Caesarean. We included all cases of preventive and emergent Caesarean under loco-regional or general anesthesia. Data were compiled from the obstetrical files of the patients, the anesthetic consultation registry and the databasis of the department of gyneco-obstetric. The test of khi2 of Pearson was used for the comparison of our results with a value of p The consent of the patients or parents was gotten. The survey didn’t include a potentially dangerous act.

In Mali, chest injuries remain a real public health problem and are associated with heavy morbidity and mortality. Faced with a resurgence of urban civil violence and the explosion of road accidents, we decided to conduct this study in order to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of thoracic trauma in the emergency department. Method and Material: This is a descriptive prospective study over a period of one year in the emergency department of the CHU Gabriel Touré. Including all patients admitted for thoracic trauma. Analysis and Entry: Data were entered and analyzed on SPSS software version 20.0. The test was significant for a p value Results: We recorded 21,090 appeals in our structure among which 1284 patients were suspected of thoracic trauma. The diagnosis of thoracic trauma was retained in 119 (0.56%) patients. All patients were transported to the emergency room without prehospital medicalization. Clinical presentation was dominated by dyspnea in 54.6% of patients, however pain was the almost constant symptom in conscious victims. Various traumatic mechanisms had caused these lesions of the thorax, of which road traffic accidents represented half of the causes, followed by urban civil violence in 28.6% of patients. Landslides and falls from a great height were responsible for 19.5% of chest injuries. Open chest trauma was the type of lesion found in a third of the cases. This type of injury was exclusively due to blows and injuries during the brawls. Standard chest radiography was performed as the first intention in 60% of patients compared to 10.9% for the pleuropulmonary ultrasound. Thirteen patients required ventilatory assistance after orotracheal intubation. The average length of stay was 65.23 hours.
