Identifying key traits in high-yielding rice cultivars for adaptability to both temperate and tropical environments

Increasing rice yield potential is a continuous challenge posed by world population *** increase yield potential,favorable alleles of valuable genes need to be accumulated in promising *** conducted comparative yield trials for two years in Tsukuba,Japan,in a temperate region and at the International Rice Research Institute(IRRI),Philippines,in a tropical region using five high-yielding rice cultivars:Takanari and Hokuriku193,developed in Japan,and IR64,NSIC Rc158,and YTH183,developed in the *** plus genotype×environment interaction(GGE)biplot analysis across four environments(two regions×two seasons)classified the five cultivars into four categories:Takanari and YTH183 showed high adaptability to both tropical and temperate regions,Hokuriku193 was suitable for temperate regions,NSIC Rc158 was suitable for the tropics,and IR64 was inferior to the other cultivars in both *** high yield and adaptability in Takanari and YTH183 were attributed to their large sink capacity with good grain *** plant type for high yield was different,however,between the two cultivars;Takanari was a panicle-weight type,whereas YTH183 was a panicle-number *** of F2 progeny of a cross between Takanari and YTH183 showed transgressive segregation for number of panicles per plant as well as number of spikelets per panicle,leading some F2 plants to produce more spikelets per plant(corresponding to larger sink size)than the parental cultivars in both *** results suggest the possibility of developing rice cultivars with high yield potential in both temperate and tropical regions by crossing temperate with tropical high-yielding cultivars.

Natural Convection Melting in a Rectangular Heat Storage Tank of Carbon Nanotube Dispersed Latent Heat Storage Material

Intravenous immunoglobulin suppresses IL-10 production by activated B cells in vitro

A therapeutic preparation of polyclonal human IgG, i.e., intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), has been employed to treat several inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. B cells are supposed to be a target of IVIg, but the molecular mechanism is elusive because of the lack of a suitable experimental system. To gain an insight into the beneficial effect of IVIg on B cells, we first established an experimental setting in which IVIg modulates a murine B cell function in vitro, and then aimed at identifying the mechanistic features at the molecular level. Here we show that IVIg down-regulates IL-10 production by CpG-activated B cells in vitro. The responsible component of IVIg was identified as the F(ab’)2 portion, whose polyclonality is mandatory for the suppressive effect. IVIg, bound to the surface of activated B cells, was found to be co-localized with intracellular SHP-1 on confocal laser microscopy, suggesting that B cell-surface immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif-harboring receptors that recruit SHP-1 are target molecules for IVIg in our experimental setting. Overall, we postulate a scenario in which IVIg attenuates B cells by suppressing IL-10 production, a B cell growth factor, and thus down-regulates the production of pathogenic antibodies.

Circulating tumor DNA as a liquid biopsy target for detection of pancreatic cancer

Most pancreatic cancer patients present with advanced metastatic disease, resulting in extremely poor 5-year survival, mainly because of the lack of a reliable modality for early detection and limited therapeutic options for advanced disease. Therefore, there is a need for minimally-invasive diagnostic tools for detecting pancreatic cancer at an early stage, when curative surgery and also novel therapeutic approaches including precision medicine may be feasible. The "liquid biopsy" addresses these unmet clinical needs based on the concept that simple peripheral blood sampling and detection of circulating tumor DNA(ct DNA) could provide diagnostic information. In this review, we provide an overview of the current status of bloodbased tests for diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and the potential utility of ct DNA for precision medicine. We also discuss challenges that remain to be addressed in developing practical ct DNA-based liquid biopsy approaches for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Artificial neural network-based determination of denoised optical properties in double integrating spheres measurement

Accurate determination of the optical properties of biological tissues enables quantitative understanding of light propagation in these tissues for optical diagnosis and treatment *** absorption(μa)and scattering(μs)coe±cients of biological tissues are inversely analyzed from their diffuse re°ectance(R)and total transmittance(T),which are measured using a double integrating spheres(DIS)*** inversion algorithms,for example,inverse adding doubling method and inverse Monte Carlo method,are sensitive to noise signals during the DIS measurements,resulting in reduced accuracy during *** this study,we propose an arti ficial neural network(ANN)to estimateμa andμs at a target wavelength from the R and T spectra measured via the DIS to reduce noise in the optical *** models of the optical properties and Monte Carlo calculations that simulated the DIS measurements were used to generate spectral datasets comprisingμa,μs,R and *** noise signals were added to R and T,and the ANN model was then trained using the noise-added *** results showed that the trained ANN model reduced the effects of noise inμa andμs *** veri fication indicated noise-reduced estimation from the R and T values measured by the DIS with a small number of scans on average,resulting in measurement time *** results demonstrated the noise robustness of the proposed ANN-based method for optical properties determination and will contribute to shorter DIS measurement times,thus reducing changes in the optical properties due to desiccation of the samples.

Risk factors and diagnostic biomarkers for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease-associated hepatocellular carcinoma:Current evidence and future perspectives

Effect of Substrate Temperature on Carbon Nitride Thin Films Prepared by Radio Frequency Sputtering

Carbon nitride thin films have been deposited by radio frequency sputtering at different substrate temperatures. The electronic structure and optical properties of the films have been systematically studied for the different substrate temperatures. The maximum N concentration in the films arrived at 41 at.%. The binding energy of core levels C 1s and N 1s produces a large shift in the range of 3.5-0.3eV depending on substrate temperature Ts. The band gap is at about 0.61-1.22eV. N atom concentration and shift of core level as well as electron band gap decrease with increasing Ts, which illustrates that raising Ts is not a good way to form carbon nitride films. Ultraviolet-visible near infrared spectra show that the films have a good transparency in near infrared region, but there is a sharp absorption peak around 2720 nm. The peak disappears when Ts is higher than 400℃.

Development of an ADC radiation tolerance characterization system for the upgrade of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter

ATLAS LAr calorimeter will undergo its Phase-I upgrade during the long shutdown（LS2） in 2018, and a new LAr Trigger Digitizer Board（LTDB） will be designed and installed. Several commercial-off-the-shelf（COTS）multi-channel high-speed ADCs have been selected as possible backups of the radiation tolerant ADC ASICs for the LTDB. To evaluate the radiation tolerance of these backup commercial ADCs, we developed an ADC radiation tolerance characterization system, which includes the ADC boards, data acquisition（DAQ） board, signal generator,external power supplies and a host computer. The ADC board is custom designed for different ADCs, with ADC drivers and clock distribution circuits integrated on board. The Xilinx ZC706 FPGA development board is used as a DAQ board. The data from the ADC are routed to the FPGA through the FMC（FPGA Mezzanine Card）connector, de-serialized and monitored by the FPGA, and then transmitted to the host computer through the Gigabit Ethernet. A software program has been developed with Python, and all the commands are sent to the DAQ board through Gigabit Ethernet by this program. Two ADC boards have been designed for the ADC, ADS52J90 from Texas Instruments and AD9249 from Analog Devices respectively. TID tests for both ADCs have been performed at BNL, and an SEE test for the ADS52J90 has been performed at Massachusetts General Hospital（MGH）. Test results have been analyzed and presented. The test results demonstrate that this test system is very versatile, and works well for the radiation tolerance characterization of commercial multi-channel high-speed ADCs for the upgrade of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter. It is applicable to other collider physics experiments where radiation tolerance is required as well.
