Comparison of imo and Humphrey field analyzer perimeters in glaucomatous eyes

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the most common cause of hepatic fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC),mainly as a result of chronic necroinflammatory liver disease. A characteristic feature of chronic hepatitis B infection,alcoholic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is hepatic steatosis. Hepatic steatosis leads to an increase in lipid peroxidation in hepatocytes,which,in turn,activates hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). HSCs are the primary target cells for inflammatory and oxidative stimuli,and these cells produce extracellular matrix components. Chronic hepatitis B appears to progress more rapidly in males than in females,and NAFLD,cirrhosis and HCC are predominately diseases that tend to occur in men and postmenopausal women. Premenopausal women have lower hepatic iron stores and a decreased production of proinflammatory cytokines. Hepatic steatosis has been observed in aromatase-deficient mice,and has been shown to decrease in animals after estradiol treatment. Estradiol is a potent endogenous antioxidant which suppresses hepatic fibrosis in animal models,and attenuates induction of redox sensitive transcription factors,hepatocyte apoptosis and HSC activation by inhibiting a generation of reactive oxygen species in primary cultures. Variant estrogen receptors are expressed to a greater extent in male patients with chronic liver disease than in females. These lines of evidence suggest that the greater progression of hepatic fibrosis and HCC in men and postmenopausal women may be due,at least in part,to lower production of estradiol and a reduced response to the action of estradiol. A better understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying the sex-associated differences in hepatic fibrogenesis and carciogenesis may open up new avenues for the prevention and treatment of chronic liver disease.

Effects of estradiol and progesterone on the proinflammatory cytokine production by mononuclear cells from patients with chronic hepatitis C

AIM:To investigate the effects of estradiol (E2) and progesterone on the unstimulated and oxidative stressstimulated production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, and macrophage chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with chronic hepatitis C and healthy controls. METHODS:The PBMCs were separated from agematched 72 males and 71 females with and without chronic hepatitis C, who were divided into two groups based on a mean menopausal age of 50 years. Oxidative stress was induced by hydrogen peroxide in the cells incubated in serum-free media. Cytokines in the culture supernatant were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS:The highest levels of the spontaneous production of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-8, and MCP-1 by the unstimulated PBMCs were in the older male patients with chronic hepatitis C and the lowest levels were in the premenopausal female healthy controls. E2 inhibited the cytokine production by the unstimulated PBMCs from the older male and post-menopausal female patients, which was further stimulated by progesterone. The exposure to hydrogen peroxide in the PBMCs from the younger male and pre-menopausal female healthy subjects induced the production of cytokines. The change rates of the hydrogen peroxide-stimulated cytokine production were suppressed by E2 and enhanced by progesterone. CONCLUSION:These findings suggest that E2 may play a favorable role in the course of persistent liver injury by preventing the accumulation of monocytes-macrophages and by inhibiting proinflammatory cytokine production, whereas progesterone may counteract the favorable E2 effects.

[目的]探讨应用KASS系统前路矫正治疗特发性脊柱侧凸的临床效果。[方法]应用KASS系统治疗总123例病例。根据King分型法可分为：胸椎侧凸47例（其中Ⅱ型13例，Ⅲ型18例，Ⅳ型16例），胸腰椎或腰椎侧凸76例。所有病例中均对主要侧凸部位行前路矫形手术，平均随访7年7个月（2年～13年6个月）。[结果]所有病例均获骨性融合，胸椎生理性后凸和腰椎生理性前凸基本正常。胸椎侧凸部位矫正率为68％，胸腰椎或腰椎侧凸矫正率为81％。胸椎最底椎水平倾斜改善率分别为78％和83％，顶椎旋转矫正率分别为59％和70％。无神经血管及内置物引发的并发症。[结论]KASS系统可提供强有力的三维矫正效果，且融合节段少。

Evaluation of Drought and High Temperature Resistances in Cowpea （Vigna unguiculata （L.） Walpers） for Sahel, Africa

Physiological responses were studied in temperature-controlled glass house at Okinawa, Japan to evaluate drought and high temperature resistances of cowpea cultivar/strains for Sahel, Africa. Four drought-tolerant cowpea cultivar/strains （cv. TVu-11986; TVu-11979; IT-96D-604 and Dan Ilia）, and three sensible strains （cv. IT96K-238-3, IT96K-231-1 and TVu-7778） were grown in pots and imposed to drought （soil content; 9.7±1.9%（w/w））, high （30/26℃, day/night, 12/12 hour）, normal （27/23℃, control） and low （24/20℃） temperature conditions after flowering. Plant fresh weight reduced 80%, 26% and 1% by dry, high and low temperature, respectively. Stem diameter decreased 32% and 2% by dry and low temperature, respectively, but increased 5% by high temperature. Difference between the drought tolerant and sensible cultivars/strains, pre-evaluated by IITA, was explained by relationship between stem diameter and plant fresh weight with 77% of reliability. The 35% of misclassification were due to misjudgment of drought tolerant as sensible in dry plot. The stem diameter highly correlated with all parts of plant weight in all regimes except in dry treatment. Difference of the classification between IITA and our results may cause different survival strategy against drought. The cultivars/strains, evaluated as drought tolerant by IITA, might fatten up at early stage, and could avoid from drought at latter growing stage.

Comparison of Threshold Power between Methylene Blue Degradation and KI Oxidation Reaction Using Ultrasound

Ultrasound is used in various chemical reaction processes, and these reactions are influenced by ultrasonic frequency. A threshold power is required for the ultrasonic degradation reaction and oxidation reaction caused by hydroxyl radicals, and the cavitation threshold power is also influenced by frequency generally. In this study, the effects of frequency on the threshold power of methylene blue degradation and KI oxidation were investigated in the range between 22.8 kHz and 1640 kHz. The threshold power of KI oxidation reaction increased with increasing frequency. This phenomenon well agrees with previous study, and it is revealed that the generation of I-3?ion is caused by oxidation reaction of Iˉ ions with hydroxyl radicals. On the other hand, the threshold power of methylene blue degradation reaction was not affected by frequency. The ultrasonic degradation of methylene blue is considered to be caused by hydroxyl radicals, and there is a linear relationship between degradation rate constant and sonochemical efficiency value. However, it is guessed that the degradation of methylene blue is occurred inside cavitation bubble by pyrolysis at high frequency regions.

In order to estimate the cut-size Xc and the mechanically balanced particles in the axial flow cyclonewith the slit-separation method, the tangential velocity distributions were calculated by the finitedifference method. In comparison of the calculated results of the total collection efficiency with theexperimental results, the calculated results showed a little higher than the experimental results due tothe re-entrainment of the collected particles by turbulence. The effect of the slit for promoting thecollection efficiency was not recognized.

Effect of Particle Addition on Ultrasonic Degradation Reaction Rate

The ultrasonic degradation of methylene blue at a frequency of 490 kHz was carried out in the absence and presence of TiO2 or Al2O3 particle, and the effects of amounts of particle on the enhancement of degradation rate constant estimated by assuming first-order-kinetics were investigated. The degradation reaction was enhanced by particle addition, and the apparent degradation rate constant is proportional to the increase in amount of particle. In addition, the constant of proportionality is not influenced by degraded material and ultrasonic frequency. However, particle type influences the constant of proportionality, and the value of TiO2 particle is about 6 times as large as that of Al2O3 particle.
