Crystallization of Amorphous Poly(Lactic Acid) Induced by Vapor of Acetone to Form High Crystallinity and Transparency Specimen

Crystallization of amorphous poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was investigated by exposing to vapor of acetone. The vapor of acetone induced crystallization of the amorphous PLA effectively. It took about 24 min to complete the crystallization of a 1 cm × 2 cm × 0.55 mm specimen at 25℃. The crystallization rate increased with increasing of conducting temperature. The crystallization method yielded high crystallinity about 40%, which was almost equal to that attained by annealing or immersion methods conducted as references. The specimens crystallized by the vapor showed higher transparency than those prepared by the reference methods. The crystallization was induced by diffusion of acetone into the amorphous phase of PLA, and polarized optical photomicrographs cleared that the diffusion obeyed Fick type diffusion.

The toxin of gastropods in Fujian in 2003 was studied. The toxicity was examined by the bioassay method, the ranges of specimen toxicity were 5.7-47.3 mouse units per gram (MU/g). The toxin from the extract of the gastropods was analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry(LC/MS), the result demonstrated that the toxin consisted of Tetrodotoxin(TTX)and its derivative:4epittx,deoxyTTX,anhydroTTX.

Using Microwave Heating to Completely Recycle Concrete

The aim of this study was to develop a technique for the complete recycling of concrete based on microwave heating of surface modification coarse aggregate (SMCA) with only inorganic materials such as cement and pozzolanic materials (silica fume, fly ash). The mechanical properties of SMCA, which was produced using original coarse aggregate (OCA) and inorganic admixtures, as well as its separation from the cement matrix and recovery performance were quantitatively assessed. The experimental results showed that micro structural reinforcement of the interfacial transition zone, which is a weak part of concrete, by coating the surface of the OCA with cement and admixtures such as pozzolanic materials can help suppress the occurrence of micro-cracks and improve the mechanical performance of the OCA. Microwave heating was observed to cause micro-cracking and hydrate decomposition. Increasing the void volume and weakening the hydrated cement paste led to the effective recovery of recycled coarse aggregate.

One-Step Preparation of Poly-Lactic-Co-Glycolic-Acid Microparticles to Prevent the Initial Burst Release of Encapsulated Water-Soluble Proteins

An initial burst is often observed during the release of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from poly-lactic-coglycolic-acid (PLGA) microparticles (MPs) which have been prepared by the emulsion-solvent evaporation method. Herein, we describe the development of a simple one-step coating method that suppresses the initial burst release process. This new method involves coating the PLGA-MPs with PLGA, with the coating process being performed through the phase separation of PLGA on the surface of PLGA-MPs using the emulsion-solvent evaporation method. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was encapsulated in the PLGA-MPs as a model API. The coated MPs were spherical in shape with no pores on their smooth surface, whereas the non-coated PLGA-MPs had porous surfaces. An in vitro release study showed that the residual levels of BSA in the coated and non-coated PLGA-MPs after 1 h were about 99% and 16% of the original loads, respectively. The one-step coating method therefore represents a useful method for preparing PLGA-MPs that do not give an initial burst release of proteinaceous APIs.

A Case of Exfoliation of Oral Mucosal Epithelium in a Patient with Anti-Desmoglein 1 Antibody-Positive and Anti-Desmoglein 3 Equivocal Antibody

Pemphigus is an autoimmune bullous disease observed with lesions in the skin and mucosa. Pemphigus is classified by antibodies against desmogleins, which is cadherin type intercellular adhesion factors involved in adhesion between epidermal cells. In this case, because erosion of the oral mucosa was the primary symptom, a relationship with membrane-dominant pemphigus vulgaris was strongly suspected. And in terms of histopathology, findings not conflicted with pemphigus vulgaris were observed, but given all these different findings, the results did not correspond with bullous pemphigoid in clinical findings, and with pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris in various testing results, leading us to believe this represented a very rare case. We started oral health care, and when application of steroid ointment to the entire surface of the mucosa was continued, symptoms disappeared within approximately 2 months. In this case, relapse has not yet occurred and periodic follow-up was continued.

Spatial Distribution of Surface Soil Moisture in a Small Forested Catchment

Predicting the spatial distribution of soil moisture is an important hydrological question. We measured the spatial distribution of surface soil moisture (upper 6 cm) using an Amplitude Domain Reflectometry sensor at the plot scale (2 × 2 m) and small catchment scale (0.84 ha) in a temperate forest. The spatial variation of soil water content was higher during dry conditions than that during wet conditions. Results indicated 3.1 samples at the plot scale were sufficient to estimate mean soil water content when the precision was 0.1. Soil water content increased with increasing topographic index (TI) and soil-topographic index (STI) at the small catchment scale. The correlation between soil water content and TI was higher than that between soil water content and STI. This suggests that topography is more important for estimating surface soil moisture than soil depth as formation of surface soil moisture occurs at ≤6 cm.

We have investigated the spontaneous polarization(P_(s))of Ba_(1-x)Ca_(x)TiO_(3)(BCT)by polarization hysteresis measurements using single crystals and by density functional theory(DFT)*** crystals of BCT(x=0:07)were grown by a top-seeded solution growth(TSSG)*** polarization measurements show that the crystals(x¼0:07)have a Ps of 26.0μC/cm^(2),which is slightly small compared with BaTiO_(3)(27.3μC/cm^(2)).Our DFT calculations based on a supercell approach show that Ca atoms are markedly displaced cooperatively with the adjacent Ti atoms along the Ps *** is suggested that the CaTiO_(3)-like octahedral rotation is constructed in the BCT supercell around the Ca atoms,which is the origin of the smaller Ps observed for the BCT crystals.
