The primary endosymbiosis of cyanobacteria with primitive eukaryotes is assumed to have occurred in ancient times, leading to the formation of plants with chloroplasts. However, since this possibility has remained experimentally unproven, we tried to convert heterotrophic eukaryotes like protozoa to autotrophs with chloroplasts. For this, when eukaryotic and heterotrophic Dictyostelium cells were forcibly cultivated with two kinds of photosynthetic bacteria (the purple non-sulfur bacterium Rhodobacter and then the cyanobacterium Synechocystis) as food sources, unique autotrophic organisms consisting of multinucleate plasmodia and their derived amoeboid cells, which had very strange morphology and behaviors, were formed by endosymbiosis of the bacteria. In this case, long-term pre-cultivation with Rdodobacter seemed to be prerequisites for the formation of the autotrophic organisms. The resulting, green-colored plasmodium contained a number of Synechocystis-derived bodies in the cytoplasm. The measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence indicates that the Synechocystis-derived bodies are like chloroplasts giving the ability of photosynthesis. Only, since the fine structural characteristics and genetic background of the autotrophic multinucleate plasmodia and their derived-amoeboid cells are extremely strange, we discuss the possibility of thinking about those reasons.

Extensive expansion of the chemical diversity of fusidane-type antibiotics using a stochastic combinational strategy

Serious failure on the slope of rock ground can be caused by a cyclic action of freezing and thawing in the cold regions. The frost susceptibilityand the effect of freezing and thawing on the rock material, however, have notbeen well investigated. In order to find out the freezing effect on the rock materials, mortar specimens are frozen as a pseudo-rock material under the constant rate of freezing by means of controlling the temperature of both endsof specimen. The freezing process is given one-dimensionally to the cylindrical samples in the laboratory to simulate the in-situ freezing phenomena in the natural ground. Formation of ice lens, frost heave and water intake during freezing process are observed on the mortar specimen under constant freezing rate, which probably causes cracks or large deformation in the real rock ground. The valuesof the velocity of elastic wave propagation are compared before and after freezing process to estimate the degree of weathering due to freezing and thawing.

Background Increasing resilience is a priority in modern pig *** research shows that general resilience can be quantified via variability in longitudinal *** collection of such longitudinal data on weight,feed intake and feeding behaviour in pigs has been facilitated by the development of technologies such as automated feeding *** goal of this study was to investigate resilience traits,which were estimated as deviations from longitudinal weight,feed intake and feeding behaviour data during the finishing phase.A dataset with 324,207 records between the age of 95 and 155 days on 5,939 Pietrain pigs with known pedigree and genomic information was *** provided guidelines for a rigid quality control of longitudinal body weight data,as we found that outliers can significantly affect *** growth curve analysis,linear modelling and trajectory analyses were used for quantifying resilience *** To our knowledge,this is the first study comparing resilience traits from longitudinal body weight,feed intake and feeding behaviour data in *** demonstrated that the resilience traits are lowly to moderately heritable for deviations in body weight(h2=2.9%–20.2%),in feed intake(9.4%–23.3%)and in feeding behaviour(16.2%–28.3%).Additionally,these traits have good predictive abilities in cross-validation *** in individual body weight and feed intake trajectories are highly correlated(rg=0.78)with low to moderate favourable genetic correlations with feed conversion ratio(rg=0.39–0.49).Lastly,we showed that some resilience traits,such as the natural logarithm of variances of observed versus predicted body weights(lnvarweight),are more robust to lower observation frequencies and are repeatable over three different time periods of the finishing *** Our results will help future studies investigating resilience traits and resilience-related ***,our study provides first results on standardization of

We propose a large parallax barrier by use of aperture grille. Main advantages of using aperture grille include no reflection and no absorption in apertures, as well as wide viewing angle. These advantages are investigated with theoretical calculations and experiments by use of several kinds of LED panels, such as a fine-pitch LED panel and a 140-inch large LED panel. Limitations of viewing angle by parallax barrier are analyzed in conventional black stripes on a transparent substrate type and in aperture grille type. Experimental results straw use of aperture grille increases contrast and reduce reflection on the aperture surface.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) is a wellestablished, minimally invasive treatment for superficial neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. The universal adoption of ESD has been limited by its slow learning curve, long procedure times, and high risk of complications. One technical challenge is the lack of a second hand that can provide traction, as in conventional surgery. Reliable tissue retraction that exposes the submucosal plane of dissection would allow for safer and more efficient dissection. Magnetic anchor guided endoscopic submucosal dissection(MAGESD) has potential benefits compared to other current traction methods. MAG-ESD offers dynamic tissue retraction independent of the endoscope mimicking a surgeon's "second hand". Two types of magnets can be used: electromagnets and permanent magnets. In this article we review the MAG-ESD technology, published work and studies of magnets in ESD. We also review the use of magnetic anchor guidance systems in natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery and the idea of magnetic non-contact retraction using surface ferromagentization. We discuss the current limitations, the future potential of MAG-ESD and the developments needed for adoption of this technology.

Sekeres et al. （1） conducted a multicenter randomized, controlled trial to compare whether azacitidine-based combinations with lenalidomide or vorinostat produce superior overall response rates to azacitidine in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes （MDS）. In that trial, 224 patients with higher-risk MDS and 53 with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia （CMML） were enrolled and randomly assigned to the ＂azacitidine＂ group, ＂azacitidine plus lenalidomide＂ group or ＂azacitidine plus vorinostat＂ group. The researchers found that patients with MDS treated with azacitidine-based combinations had similar response rate to azacitidine monotherapy. Using genomic mutation analysis, they found that the overall response rate to azacitidine-based treatment was higher for patients with mutations in DNMT3A and lower for those with mutations in SRSF2. Whereas in another study, Welch et al. enrolled 26 patients with MDS and 90 with acute myeloid leukemia （AML） who were treated with decitabine, and they found that patients with TP53 mutations had a higher response rate, but not those with DNMT3A mutations （2）. We propose that this big discrepancy in the conclusions between the two studies might have been caused by the presence of many co-interacting factors, e.g. study aims, DNA demethylating agents, treatment protocols, and patient sources.

Oxygen potentials of oxide nuclear fuels are important thermodynamic data in development of nuclear fuel technologies. Minor actinide bearing MOX （mixed oxide） fuels have been developed as sodium cooled fast reactor fuels. Content of Am which is one of the minor actinide elements causes oxygen potentialto increase. The effects of the oxygen potential increase on the irradiation behavior were evaluated. Profiles of temperature and O/M （oxygen-to-metal） ratio in the pellets were evaluated to better understand the irradiation behavior. From these data, local oxygen potential in the radial direction of the pellets was calculated, and was compared with free energy of compounds composed of fission products. Based on this comparison, it was concluded that Cs2MoO4 was likely formed at pellet periphery of （U07Pu03）O1.98 and （U0.66Pu03Amoo16Npo.016）Ol.976 The extent of cladding tube inner surface oxidation was predicted by using the calculated oxygen potential. No significant difference between irradiation behaviors of （Uo.7Puo3）O2_x and （U0.66PUo 3Amo.016Npo.016）O2.x pellets was confirmed.
