Greenhouse gas reduction of co-benefit-type wastewater treatment system for fish-processing industry: A real-scale case study in Indonesia

This study examined the application of co-benefit-type wastewater treatment technology in the fish-processing industry. Given that there was a dearth of information on fish-processing industrial wastewater in Indonesia, site surveys were conducted. For the entire fish-processing industry throughout the country, the dissemination rate of wastewater treatment facilities was less than 50%. Using a co-benefit approach, a real-scale swim-bed technology (SBT) and a system combining an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) with SBT (ABR–SBT) were installed in a fishmeal processing factory in Bali, Indonesia, and the wastewater system process performance was evaluated. In a business-as-usual scenario, the estimated chemical oxygen demand load and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater from the Indonesian fish-processing industry were 33 000 tons per year and 220 000 tons of equivalent CO_(2) per year, respectively. On the other hand, the GHG emissions in the co-benefit scenarios of the SBT system and ABR–SBT system were 98 149 and 26 720 tons per year, respectively. Therefore, introducing co-benefit-type wastewater treatment to Indonesia’s fish-processing industry would significantly reduce pollution loads and GHG emissions.

A novel aptamer-based small RNA delivery platform and its application to cancer therapy

Major challenges such as nuclease degradation, rapid renal clearance, non-specific delivery, poor cellular uptake and inflammatory response have limited the clinical application of small RNA-mediated gene silencing. To overcome these challenges, we designed a novel targeting small RNA delivery platform comprising of three oligonucleotides: (1) a guide RNA sequence, (2) part of a passenger sequence linked to a DNA aptamer via a PEG linker, and (3) another passenger sequence conjugated to cholesterol, which assemble through complementary base pair annealing. Remarkably, in the presence of magnesium, this molecule self-assembled into a nanoparticle with a hydrophobic cholesterol core, hydrophilic RNA oligonucleotide shell and PEG-linked DNA aptamer flare. The nanoparticles conferred protection to the RNA oligonucleotides against nuclease degradation, which increased bioavailability, and reduced systemic inflammatory responses. The aptamer allowed targeted delivery of RNA therapeutics through cell-specific surface markers, and once inside the cell, the nanoparticles induced lysosomal leakage that released the RNA oligonucleotides into the cytosol to achieve gene silencing. We created a c-Kit-targeting miR-26a delivery particle that specifically accumulated in c-Kit^(+) breast cancer, significantly increased T cell recruitment, and inhibited tumor growth. Regression of large established tumors were achieved when the nanoparticle was used in combination with anti-CTLA-4 monoclonal antibody.

Potentials of GHG reductions from wastewater treatment for the CDM

The study aims to evaluate the potential of GHG (greenhouse gas) reductions by installing an anaerobic digester in a wastewater treatment facility in Southeast Asia. Then the break-even point of additional investment to reduce GHG is obtained by exchanging carbon price as emissions credits. In the project scenario, the wastewater treatment system has the digester, where methane (biogas) is produced and recovered. Compared with the baseline scenario, the biogas has calorific value to produce heat and electricity, and can substitute fossil fuels for power generation. The objective of the study is to define the relationship between CERs (certified emission reductions) and investment costs, and the beak-even point, finding out the dominant parameters in the system. Financial parameters such as capital costs and operating costs are considered to evaluate the investment costs. The result shows that the methane recovery reduces 54% of GHG emissions. Although the substitution of the biogas for the fossil fuels reduces only 6% of the GHG emissions, the electricity output can satisfy the electricity consumption. The results also show that the maximum CER credit is 73000 t-CO 2 e/a, and the GHG reduction cost is 14 USD/t-CO 2 e.

Body composition changes following chemotherapy for testicular germ cell tumor:obesity is the long-term problem

Metabolic syndrome is a long-term complication of systemic chemotherapy for testicular germ cell tumor(TGCT).It is believed to be caused by secondary hypogonadism or toxic medicines because of orchidectomy followed by systemic *** this study,changes in the body composition of patients over time were quantitatively analyzed up to 24 months after *** study retrospectively analyzed 44 patients with TGCT who underwent chemotherapy at our institution from January 2008 to December *** and visceral fat areas and psoas and skeletal muscle areas were measured by computed tomography before and immediately after chemotherapy as well as 3 months,6 months,12 months,and 24 months after *** subcutaneous and visceral fat indices and psoas and skeletal muscle indices were calculated as each area divided by body height *** total fat area had already significantly increased 3 months after the initiation of chemotherapy(P=0.004).However,it did not return to prechemotherapeutic levels even at 24 months after *** skeletal muscle area was significantly decreased at the end of chemotherapy(P<0.001);however,the value returned to baseline within 12 *** multivariable analysis,the prechemotherapeutic skeletal muscle index and number of chemotherapy cycles were independently associated with the reduction of skeletal muscle at the end of chemotherapy(P=0.001 and P=0.027,respectively).In patients with TGCT,skeletal muscle mass decreased during chemotherapy and recovered within 12 months,whereas fat mass progressively increased from the initiation of chemotherapy until 24 months after chemotherapy.

Floating Type Ocean Wave Power Station Equipped with Hydroelectric Unit

Internal structures and high-velocity frictional properties of a bedding-parallel carbonate fault at Xiaojiaqiao outcrop activated by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake

This paper reports internal structures of a bedding-parallel fault in Permian limestone at Xiaoji-aqiao outcrop that was moved by about 0.5 m during the 2008 MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake. The fault is located about 3 km to the south from the middle part of Yingxiu-Beichuan fault, a major fault in the Longmenshan fault system that was moved during the earthquake. The outcrop is also located at Anxian transfer zone between the northern and central segments of Yingxiu-Beichuan fault where fault system is complex. Thus the fault is an example of subsidiary faults activated by Wenchuan earthquake. The fault has a strike of 243°or N63°E and a dip of 38°NW and is nearly optimally oriented for thrust motion, in contrast to high-angle coseismic faults at most places. Surface outcrop and two shallow drilling studies reveal that the fault zone is several centimeters wide at most and that the coseismic slip zone during Wenchuan earthquake is about 1 mm thick. Fault zone contains foliated cataclasite, fault breccia, black gouge and yellowish gouge. Many clasts of foliated cataclasite and black gouge contained in fault breccia indicate multiple slip events along this fault. But fossils on both sides of fault do not indicate clear age difference and overall displacement along this fault should not be large. We also report results from high-velocity friction experiments conducted on yellowish gouge from the fault zone using a rotary shear low to high-velocity frictional testing apparatus. Dry experiments at normal stresses of 0.4 to 1.8 MPa and at slip rates of 0.08 to 1.35 m/s reveal dramatic slip weakening from the peak friction coeffcient of around 0.6 to very low steady-state friction coeffcient of 0.1–0.2. Slip weakening parameters of this carbonate fault zone are similar to those of clayey fault gouge from Yingxiu-Beichuan fault at Hongkou outcrop and from Pingxi fault zone.
