DRUG RESISTANT AND BIOACTIVE E COLI IN BEIJING

We surveyed antibiotic resistant and various bioactive Escherichia coli strains isolated in the Capital Hospital in Beijing in 1981. It was found that most of the clinical strains in Beijing were antibiotic resistant. Tetracycline resistant strains were most prevalent (92%), and incidences of resistant strains to streptomycin, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, ampicillin and kanamycin decreased in this order, suggesting that tetracycline derivatives were widely used in Beijing. Incidence of conjugative R plasmids in Beiijng (38%) was same as that in Tokyo and lower than that in Moscow. We examined hemagglutination, the common antigens with small intestine adhesive bacteria, colicin production, enterotoxin production, DNase production, invading ability into intestinal epithelial cells, active iron incorporating ability and capsules of the collected strains and found that incidences of these bioactive strains were not so different from those in Tokyo, although minor differences were found in many characters. None of the genes for these bioactive characters were found on the highly conjugative plasmids. This lower incidences of bioactive as well as conjugative R plasmids in Beiijng and Tokyo than those in Moscow suggested that plasmids in E coli strains in Beijing were similar to those in Tokyo but different from those in Moscow.

PLASMID DNA SURVEY OF CLINICALLY ISOLATED SHIGELLA STRAINS IN SHANGHAI AREA

Plasmids and biological characteristics of Shigela-strains isolated in Shanghai were studied for comparison with those of strains isolated in Tokyo from travellers back from various areas of South East Asia. Invasive ability was confirmed to be related to 140 or 120 mega dalton (M) plasmids. Thirty to 70 M plasmids were found to be conjugative R plasmids. Incidences of ampicillin, trimethoprim and mercury resistant strains (R plasmids) were higher in Shanghai strains than in South East Asian strains. A variety of small plasmids were detected in all strains. In S flexneri strains, 2.0 and 2.6 M plasmids were found to be common in the strains from both areas, and in Sonnei strains, 3.4 M col El plasmids were common. The plasmid patterns formed by the small plasmid combinations were not always specific for species or serotype. But at least these small plasmid DNA patterns could be used to trace epidemic strains.

Discharge Characteristics of Micro-Needle Array Diamond Structure

CVD polycrystalline diamond surfaces were etched using reactive ion etching system with either a conventional stainless steel electrode or MgO sintered ceramic containing electrode. The micro-needle array of high aspect on diamond substrate surfaces obtained with MgO electrode was fabricated by using back-sputtering from MgO electrode. The RMS roughness of diamond substrate surfaces obtained with MgO electrode is higher than those obtained with stainless steel electrode. The secondary electron emission coefficient in Ne gas of the diamond obtained with MgO electrode was twice that obtained with the stainless steel electrode.
