Clinical Significance of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor-C Expression in Colorectal Cancer

Platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs) are known to be associated with tumor growth and angiogenesis through their activation of the receptor tyrosine kinases, PDGF receptors alpha and beta. Several studies revealed the participation of the PDGF family in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the role of platelet derived growth factor-C (PDGFC) in CRC is less well studied. This study aimed to determine the correlation between PDGFC expression and the prognosis of patients with CRCs. Tumor samples were obtained from patients with CRC who underwent surgical resection between 2002 and 2006. The mRNA expression of PDGFC was investigated by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in 85 patients with stage I-IV CRC. PDGFC protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry, and the relationship between PDGFC protein expression and clinicopathologic features was investigated in 245 patients with stage I-III CRC. PDGFC mRNA expression in cancer tissues was significantly higher in patients with distant metastases than in those without metastases (P = 0.016). PDGFC protein overexpression was associated with significantly worse overall and relapse-free survival (P P < 0.0001, respectively). Moreover, PDGFC protein overexpression was an independent risk factor for CRC recurrence (relative risk = 3.395, 95% confidence interval = 1.895 - 6.081, P < 0.001). In the present study, PDGFC overexpression appeared to be predictive of recurrence and poor prognosis in patients with CRC.

When suspicious FDG accumulation was found in ALN, the presence of metastasiswas reevaluated by second US. We examined predictors of upstaging from N0 to pN2a/*** 135 patients, we identified 1-3 ALNs (pN1) in 113 patients and ³4 ALNs (pN2a/pN3a) in22 patients. Multivariate analysis identified the total number of SLN metastasis, the maximaldiameter of metastasis in the SLN (SLNDmax), and FDG accumulation of ALN as predictors ofupstaging to pN2a/*** identified factors involved in upstaging from N0 to pN2a/pN3a. The SLNDmax and numberof SLN metastasis are predictors of ≥ 4 ALNs (pN2a/pN3a) and predictors of metastasis to nonsentinelnodes, which have been reported in the past. Attention should be given to axillaryaccumulations of FDG, even when faint.

BACKGROUND Heterozygous familial hypobetalipoproteinemia(FHBL)is a semi-autosomal disorder that is caused mainly by an APOB *** is usually asymptomatic and rarely leads to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).CASE SUMMARY A 12-year-old boy was referred to our hospital after prolonged elevation of liver enzymes was observed during health checkups in Kagawa *** ultrasound showed a bright liver,and laboratory investigations revealed low lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B protein *** family history included fatty liver and hypolipidemia in his father,which led to a clinical diagnosis of FHBL.A liver biopsy was performed on suspicion of liver fibrosis based on *** liver tissue showed fatty steatosis,inflammation,hepatocyte ballooning,and fibrosis,indicating *** testing detected the APOB variant,and the patient was treated successfully with vitamin *** It is important to assess family history and liver dysfunction severity in non-obese patients with hypolipidemia and fatty liver.

AIM： To investigate the poor prognosis of HCC with PVTT, we evaluated the efficacy by a new combination chemotherapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） with portal vein tumor thrombus （PVTT）. METHODS： From 2002 to 2007, a total of 10 consecutive patients with Stage IVA HCC accompanied by PVTT were studied prospectively to examine the efficacy of treatment by intra-arterial infusion of a chemotherapeutic agents consisting of etoposide, carboplatin, epirubicin and pharmacokinetic modulating chemotherapy by 5-FU and enteric-coated tegafur/uracil. RESULTS： The mean course of chemotherapy was 14.4 （range, 9-21） too. One patient showed complete response （CR） with disappearance of HCC and PVI-F after treatment, and the two patients showed partial response （PR）, response rate （CR ＋ PR/All cases 30%）. The median survival time after the therapy was 457.2 d. The one-year survival rate was 70%. Adverse reactions were tolerable.CONCLUSION： Although the prognosis of most patients with Stage IVA HCC by PVTT is poor, our combination chemotherapy may induces long-term survival and is an effective treatment and produced anti-tumor activity with tolerable adverse effects in patients for advanced Stage IVA HCC accompanied by PVTT.

We propose an efficient, specific method for estimating camera parameters from a single starry night image. Such an image consists of a collection of disks representing stars, so traditional estimation methods for common pictures do not work. Our method uses a database, a star catalog, that stores the positions of stars on the celestial sphere. Our method computes magnitudes(i.e., brightnesses) of stars in the input image and uses them to find the corresponding stars in the star catalog. Camera parameters can then be estimated by a simple geometric calculation. Our method is over ten times faster and more accurate than a previous method.

AIM:To determine whether fluid injection during radiofrequency ablation(RFA) can increase the coagulation ***:Bovine liver(1-2 kg) was placed on an aluminum tray with a return electrode affixed to the base,and the liver was punctured by an expandable *** RFA,5% glucose;50% glucose;or saline fluid was infused continuously at a rate of 1.0 mL/min through the infusion line connected to the infusion *** area and volume of the thermocoagulated region of bovine liver were determined after *** Joule heat generated was determined from the temporal change in output during the RFA ***:No liquid infusion was 17.3 ± 1.6 mL,similar to the volume of a 3-cm diameter sphere(14.1 mL).Mean thermocoagulated volume was significantly larger with continuous infusion of saline(29.3 ± 3.3 mL) than with 5% glucose(21.4 ± 2.2 mL),50%glucose(16.5 ± 0.9 mL) or no liquid infusion(17.3 ± 1.6 mL).The ablated volume for RFA with saline was approximately 1.7-times greater than for RFA with no liquid infusion,representing a significant difference between these two *** Joule heat generated during RFA was highest with saline,and lowest with 50% ***:RFA with continuous saline infusion achieves a large ablation zone,and may help inhibit local recurrence by obtaining sufficient ablation *** during continuous saline infusion can extend ablation margins,and may be prevent local recurrence.

The development of intracytoplasmic sperm injection （ICSI） opened a new era in the field of assisted reproduction and revolutionized the assisted reproductive technology protocols for couples with male factor infertility. Fertilisation and pregnancies can be achieved with spermatozoa recovered not only from the ejaculate but also from the seminiferous tubules. The most common methods for retrieving testicular sperm in non-obstructive azoospermia （NOA） are testicular sperm aspiration （TESA： needle/fine needle aspiration） and open testicular biopsy （testicular sperm extraction： TESE）. The optimal technique for sperm extraction should be minimally invasive and avoid destruction of testicular function, without compromising the chance to retrieve adequate numbers of spermatozoa to perform ICSh Microdissection TESE （micro-TESE）, performed with an operative microscope, is widely considered to be the best method for sperm retrieval in NOA, as larger and opaque tubules, presumably with active spermatogenesis, can be directly identified, resulting in higher spermatozoa retrieval rates with minimal tissue loss and low postoperative complications. Micro-TESE, in combination with ICSI, is applicable in all cases of NOA, including Klinefelter syndrome （KS）. The outcomes of surgical sperm retrieval, primarily in NOA patients with elevated serum follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH）（NOA including KS patients）, are reviewed along with the phenotypic features. The predictive factors for surgical sperm retrieval and outcomes of treatment were analysed. Finally, the short- and long-term complications in micro-TESE in both 46XY males with NOA and KS patients are considered.

Loess magnetic properties in the Ili Basin and their correlation with the Chinese Loess Plateau

Over the past two decades, magnetoclimatological studies of loess-paleosol sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) have made outstanding achievements, which greatly promote the understanding of East Asian paleomonsoon evolution, inland aridification of Asia, and past global climate changes. Loess magnetic properties of the CLP have been well studied. In contrast, loess magnetic properties from outside the CLP in China have not been fully understood. We have little knowledge about the magnetic properties of loess in the Ili Basin, an intermontane depression of the Tianshan (or Tien Shan) Mountains. Here, we present the results of rock magnetic measurements of the Ili loess including mass magnetic susceptibility (χ) and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), high/low temperature dependence of susceptibility (TDS) and hysteresis, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineral analysis. Based on the comparison with loess-paleosol sequences in the CLP (hereafter referred to as the Chinese loess), we discuss the possible magnetic susceptibility enhancement mechanism of the Ili loess. The results show that 1) the total magnetic mineral concentration of the Ili loess is far lower than that of the Chinese loess, though they have similar magnetic mineral compositions. The ferrimagnetic minerals in the Ili loess are magnetite and maghemite, and the antiferromagnetic mineral is hematite; XRD analysis also identifies the presence of ilmenite. The ratio of maghemite is lower in the Ili loess than in the Chinese loess, but the ratios of magnetite and hematite are higher in the Ili loess than in the Chinese loess. 2) The granularity of magnetic minerals in the Ili loess, dominated by pseudo-single domain (PSD) and multi-domain (MD) grains, is generally much coarser than that of the Chinese loess.
