The remote forcing from land surface changes in the Sahara is hypothesized to play a pivotal role in modulating the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM)through ocean-atmospheric *** modulation has far-reaching consequences,particularly in facilitating societal shifts documented in northern ***,we present a well-dated lake-level record from the Daihai Lake Basin in northern China,providing quantitative assessments of Holocene monsoonal precipitation and the consequent migrations of the northern boundary of the *** reconstruction,informed by a water-and-energy balance model,indicates that annual precipitation reached700 mm during 8–5 ka,followed by a rapid decline to tween 5 and 4 *** shift coherently aligns with a signi550 mm be-ficant300 km northwestward movement of the EASM northern boundary during the Middle Holocene(MH),in contrast to its current *** findings underscore that these changes cannot be entirely attributed to orbital forcing,as corroborated by simulation *** model simulations deployed in our study suggest that the presence of the Green Sahara during the MH significantly strengthened the EASM and led to a northward shift of the monsoon rainfall ***,the Sahara’s reversion to a desert landscape in the late Holocene was accompanied by a corresponding southward retraction of monsoon *** dramatic hydroclimate changes during5–4 ka likely triggered or at least contributed to a shift in Neolithic cultures and societal transformation in northern *** decreasing agricultural productivity,communities transitioned from millet farming to a mixed rainfed agriculture and animal husbandry ***,our findings elucidate not only the variability of the EASM but also the profound implications of a remote forcing,such as surface transformations of the Sahara,on climatic changes and cultural evolution in northern China.

AIM: To investigate whether semi-vegetarian diet (SVD) has a preventive effect against relapse of Crohn’s disease (CD) in patients who have achieved remission,who are a high-risk group for ***: A prospective,single center,2-year clinical trial was ***-two adult CD patients who achieved clinical remission either medically (n = 17) or surgically (n = 5) and consumed an SVD during hospitalization were advised to continue with an SVD and avoid known high-risk foods for inflammatory bowel *** primary endpoint was clinical relapse defi ned as the appearance of active symptoms of ***-Meier survival analysis was used to calculate the cumulative proportion of patients who had a relapse.A 2-year analysis of relapse rates of patients who followed an SVD and those who did not (an omnivorous diet group) was ***: SVD was continued by 16 patients (compliance 73%).Remission was maintained in 15 of 16 patients (94%) in the SVD group vs two of six (33%)in the omnivorous *** rate with SVD was 100% at 1 year and 92% at 2 *** showed signif icant prevention in the time to relapse compared to that in the omnivorous group (P = 0.0003,log rank test).The concentration of C-reactive protein was normal at the f inal visit in more than half of the patients in remission who were taking an SVD,who maintained remission during the study (9/15;60%),who terminated follow-up (8/12;67%),and who completed 2 years follow-up (7/10;70%).There was no untoward effect of ***: SVD was highly effective in preventing relapse in CD.

There have only been a few reports on lansoprazole-associated collagenous colitis. Colonic mucosa of collagenous colitis is known to be endoscopically normal. We present a case of collagenous colitis where the mucosa showed diffuse cloudiness mimicking ulcerative colitis. A 70-year-old woman developed watery diarrhea four to nine times a day. She had interstitial pneumonia at 67 and reflux esophagitis at 70 years. Lansoprazole 30 mg/d had been prescribed for reflux esophagitis for nearly 6 mo. Lansoprazole was withdrawn due to its possible side effect of diarrhea. Colonoscopy disclosed diffuse cloudiness of the mucosa which suggested ulcerative colitis. Consequently sulfasalazine 2 g/d was started. The patient's diarrhea dramatically disappeared on the following day. However, biopsy specimens showed subepithelial collagenous thickening and infi ltration of inflammatory cells in the lamina propria, confirming the diagnosis of collagenous colitis. One month after sulfasalazine therapy was initiated, colonoscopic and histological abnormalities resolved completely. Five months later the diarrhea recurred. The findings on colonoscopy and histology were the same as before, confirming a diagnosis of collagenous colitis relapse. We found that the patient had begun to take lansoprazole again 3 mo ahead of the recent diarrhea. Withdrawal of lansoprazole promptly resolved the diarrhea. Endoscopic and histological abnormalities were also completely resolved, similar to the first episode. Retrospectively, the date of commencement of sulfasalazine and discontinuation of lansoprazole in the first episode was found to be the same. We conclude that this patient had lansoprazole-associated collagenous colitis.

This paper deals with the application of data mining techniques to the conceptual design knowledge for a LV (launch vehicle) with a HRE (hybrid rocket engine). This LV is a concept of the space transportation, which can deliver micro-satellite to the SSO (sun-synchronous orbit). To design the higher performance LV with HRE, the optimum size of each component, such as an oxidizer tank containing liquid oxidizer, a combustion chamber containing solid fuel, a pressurizing tank and a nozzle, should be acquired. The Kriging based ANOVA (analysis of variance) and SOM (self-organizing map) are employed as data mining techniques for knowledge discovery. In this study, the paraffin (FT-0070) is used as a propellant of HRE. Then, the relationship among LV performances and design variables are investigated through the analysis and the visualization. To calculate the engine performance, the regression rate is computed based on an empirical expression. The design knowledge is extracted for the design knowledge of the multi-stage LV with HRE by analysis using ANOVA and SOM. As a result, the useful design knowledge on the present design problem is obtained to design HRE for space transportation.

Effect of zeta potentials on bovine serum albumin adsorption on crown composite resin surfaces <i>in vitro</i>

We previously studied the mechanism underlying the adsorption of oral bacteria on the surfaces of dental prosthetic materials such as ceramics and resins in vitro. The aim of the present study was to examine bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption on crown composite resin surfaces by means of zeta potential. We measured the zeta potentials of resins alone, BSA alone, and resins after BSA adsorption. Eight resins were pulverized into powders (300 - 1000 nm). All experiments were conducted in 10 mM sodium chloride solution (pH 6.5). BSA was dissolved in 10 mM NaCl with a concentration of 2.0 × 10-5 mol/l. An adsorption assay was performed for one hour at 37°C under continuous rotation (6 rpm). The zeta potentials of both resins and BSA were negative, with BSA itself less negative than the resins themselves as an absolute value (p < 0.0001). The zeta potentials of seven resin surfaces after BSA adsorption were significantly less negative than were those of the resins without BSA adsorption (p < 0.0001). Eight resins were divided into two classes based on the size of the surface potential difference between each resin and the BSA. The difference in surface potential between the resins and the BSA were small, leading to the theory that particles with identical charges repulse each other, and the amounts of adsorbed BSA on these resins might be less. On the other, when the differences between the other resins and BSA are large, so that the repulsive force between two nonidentical particles becomes zero and an attractive force might be generated, then more BSA might be adsorbed on those resins. Therefore, the zeta potentials were affected by BSA adsorption and became less negative. These results suggested that electrostatic interactions play an important role in the adsorption of BSA on resin surfaces.
