Mechanistic insights into the novel glucose-sensitive behavior of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)

A glucose-sensitive polymer,poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-2-acrylamidophenylboronic acid)(P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)),was synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT)*** of glucose results in reduced solubility and hence increased turbidity,rather than the normal increase in solubility(decreased turbidity)observed for other PBA-based glucose-sensitive *** novel glucose-sensitive behavior is explained by a new mechanism,in which glucose acts as an additive and depresses the lower critical solution temperature(LCST)of the polymer,instead of increasing solubility by increasing the degree of ionization of the PBA *** and theoretic analysis for the influence of glucose on the thermal behavior of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)reveals that glucose depresses the LCST of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)copolymers in a two-stage manner,a fast decrease at low glucose concentrations followed by a slow decrease at high glucose *** low glucose concentrations,the binding of glucose with PBA groups on the polymer chain increases the number of glucose molecules proximal to the polymer which influences the thermal behavior of the polymer,causing a rapid decrease in ***,the transition occurs at a glucose concentration equal to the reciprocal of the binding constant between PBA and glucose,thus providing a novel method to determine the binding *** saccharides,including mannose,galactose and fructose,also depress the LCST of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)copolymer in the same way.

Developing Social Citizenship? A Case Study of Education and Health Services in Yantian Village of Guangdong Province

Social policy is an indispensable element of rule and China＇s current leadership has moved policy to a more inclusive system based on a notion of citizenship. The extension of social welfareprovision is examined through a case study of education and health care in the South China village of Yantian. Yantian lies at the core of the Pearl River Delta, which has become a key link in the global reorganization of manufacturing andproduction. Consequently, the village is home to some 80 000 migrant workers who complement the 3000 registered inhabitants. A study of education and health-care provision reveals that in terms of equity, registered villagers enjoy significant advantages in seeking welJare resources. Although living in the same village, the two groups inhabit ＂＇different worlds. ＂However, provision, while selective, has become more inclusive. The present research suggests that ＂＇social citizenship＂ will precede ＂＇political citizenship. ＂

Review of the Regulations for Clinical Research in Herbal Medicines in USA

Update on hepatocellular carcinoma: Pathologists' review

Histopathologic diversity and several distinct histologic subtypes of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) are well-recognized. Recent advances in molecular pathology and growing knowledge about the biology associated with distinct histologic features and immuno-profile in HCC allowed pathologists to update classifications. Improving sub-classification will allow for more clinically relevant diagnoses and may allow for stratification into biologically meaningful subgroups. Therefore, immuno-histochemical and molecular testing are not only diagnostically useful, but also are being incorporated as crucial components in predicting prognosis of the patients with HCC. Possibilities of targeted therapy are being explored in HCC, and it will be important for pathologists to provide any data that may be valuable from a theranostic perspective. Herein, we review and provide updates regarding the pathologic sub-classification of *** diagnostic approach and the role of biomarkers as prognosticators are reviewed. Further, the histopathology of four particular subtypes of HCC:Steatohepatitic, clear cell, fibrolamellar and scirrhous-and their clinical relevance, and the recent consensus on combined HCC-cholangiocarcinoma is summarized. Finally, emerging novel biomarkers and new approaches to HCC stratification are reviewed.

Identification of naphthalene metabolism by white rot fungus Armillaria sp.F022

Armillaria sp. F022, a white rot fungus isolated from tropical rain forest （Samarinda, Indonesia） was used to biodegrade naphthalene in cultured medium. Transformation of naphthalene by Armillaria sp. F022 which is able to use naphthalene, a two ring-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon （PAH） as a source of carbon and energy was investigated. The metabolic pathway was elucidated by identifying metabolites, biotransformation studies and monitoring enzyme activities in cell-free extracts. The identification of metabolites suggests that Armillaria sp. F022 initiates its attack on naphthalene by dioxygenation at its C-1 and C-4 positions to give 1,4-naphthoquinone. The intermediate 2-hydroxybenzaldebyde and salicylic acid, and the characteristic of the meta-cleavage of the resulting diol were identified in the long-term incubation. A part from typical metabolites of naphthalene degradation known from mesophiles, benzoic acid was identified as the next intermediate for the naphthalene pathway of this Armillaria sp. F022. Neither phthalic acid, catechol and cis, cis-muconic acid metabolites were detected in culture extracts. Several enzymes （manganese peroxidase, lignin peroxidase, laccase, 1,2-dioxygenase and 2,3-dioxygenase） produced by ArmiUaria sp. F022 were detected during the incubation.

In order to quickly and accurately locate the fault location of the distribution network and increase the stability of the distribution network,a fault recovery method based on multi-objective optimization algorithm is *** optimization of the power distribution network fault system based on multiagent technology realizes fast recovery of multi-objective fault,solve the problem of network learning and parameter adjustment in the later stage of particle swarm optimization algorithm falling into the local extreme value dilemma,and realize the multi-dimensional nonlinear optimization of the main grid and the auxiliary *** system proposed in this study takes power distribution network as the goal,applies fuzzy probability algorithm,simplifies the calculation process,avoids local extreme value,and finally realizes the energy balance between each power *** results show that the Multi-Agent Technology enjoys priority in restoring important load,shortening the recovery time of power grid balance,and reducing the overall line loss rate of power ***,the power grid fault self-healing system can improve the safety and stability of the important power grid,and reduce the economic loss rate of the whole power grid.

An LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous analysis of the cystic fibrosis therapeutic drugs colistin,ivacaftor and ciprofloxacin

Inhaled antibiotics such as colistin and ciprofloxacin are increasingly used to treat bacterial lung infections in cystic fibrosis *** this study,we established and validated a new HPLC-MS/MS method that could simultaneously detect drug concentrations of ciprofloxacin,colistin and ivacaftor in rat plasma,human epithelial cell lysate,cell culture medium,and drug transport *** aliquot of200 μL drug-containing rat plasma or cell culture medium was treated with 600 μL of extraction solution(acetonitrile containing 0.1% formic acid and 0.2% trifluoroacetic acid(TFA)).The addition of 0.2% TFA helped to break the drug-protein ***,the addition of 0.1% formic acid to the transport medium and cell lysate samples could significantly improve the response and *** vortexing and centrifuging,the sample components were analyzed by HPLC-MS/*** multiple reaction monitoring mode was used to detect the following transitions:585.5-101.1(colistin A),578.5-101.1(colistin B),393.2-337.2(ivacaftor),332.2-314.2(ciprofloxacin),602.3-101.1(polymyxin B1 as internal standard(IS)) and 595.4-101.1(polymyxin B2 as IS).The running time of a single sample was only 6 min,making this a time-efficient *** correlations were found for colistin A at 0.029-5.82 μg/m L,colistin B at 0.016-3.14 μg/m L,ivacaftor at 0.05-10.0 μg/m L,and ciprofloxacin at 0.043-8.58 μg/m ***,precision,and stability of the method were within the acceptable *** method would be highly useful for research on cytotoxicity,animal pharmacokinetics,and in vitro drug delivery.

An acoustofluidic scanning nanoscope using enhanced image stacking and processing

Nanoscale optical resolution with a large field of view is a critical feature for many research and industry areas,such as semiconductor fabrication,biomedical imaging,and nanoscale material *** scanning microscopes have been developed to resolve the inverse relationship between the resolution and field of view;however,those scanning microscopes still rely upon fluorescence labeling and complex optical *** overcome these limitations,we developed a dual-camera acoustofluidic nanoscope with a seamless image merging algorithm(alphablending process).This design allows us to precisely image both the sample and the microspheres simultaneously and accurately track the particle path and ***,the number of images required to capture the entire field of view(200×200μm)by using our acoustofluidic scanning nanoscope is reduced by 55-fold compared with previous ***,the image quality is also greatly improved by applying an alpha-blending imaging technique,which is critical for accurately depicting and identifying nanoscale objects or *** dual-camera acoustofluidic nanoscope paves the way for enhanced nanoimaging with high resolution and a large field of view.

Assessing parameter sensitivity in a university campus COVID-19 model with vaccinations

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,universities have experienced unique challenges due to their dual nature as a place of education and *** research has explored non-pharmaceutical approaches to combating COVID-19,including representing in models different categories such as age *** key area not currently well represented in models is the effect of pharmaceutical preventative measures,specifically vaccinations,on COVID-19 spread on college *** remain key questions on the sensitivity of COVID-19 infection rates on college campuses to potentially time-varying vaccine *** we introduce a compartment model that decomposes a campus population into constituent subpopulations and implements vaccinations with timevarying *** use this model to represent a campus population with both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals,and we analyze this model using two metrics of interest:maximum isolation population and symptomatic *** demonstrate a decrease in symptomatic infections occurs for vaccinated individuals when the frequency of testing for unvaccinated individuals is *** find that the number of symptomatic infections is insensitive to the frequency of testing of the unvaccinated subpopulation once about 80%or more of the population is *** a Sobol’global sensitivity analysis,we characterize the sensitivity of modeled infection rates to these uncertain *** find that in order to manage symptomatic infections and the maximum isolation population campuses must minimize contact between infected and uninfected individuals,promote high vaccine protection at the beginning of the semester,and minimize the number of individuals developing symptoms.
