A simple nitrobenzyl-umbelliferone （NCOU1） was synthesised.containing a nitrored.ctase （NTR） trigger moiety. The presence of NTR, resulted.in the fragmentation of the parent molecule and.release of the highly emissive fluorophore umbelliferone via an NTR-catalyzed.red.ction of the nitro group. In the presence of the NTR enzyme, NCOU1 gave rise to a 5-fold.increase in fluorescence intensity at 455 nm and.was selective for NTR over other red.ctive enzymes. These results ind.cate that NCOU1 can be used.as a simple assay for the d.tection of NTR.

A glucose-sensitive polymer,poly(N-isopropylacrylamid.-co-2-acrylamid.phenylboronic acid.(P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)),was synthesized.by reversible ad.ition fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT)*** of glucose results in red.ced.solubility and.hence increased.turbid.ty,rather than the normal increase in solubility(d.creased.turbid.ty)observed.for other PBA-based.glucose-sensitive *** novel glucose-sensitive behavior is explained.by a new mechanism,in which glucose acts as an ad.itive and.d.presses the lower critical solution temperature(LCST)of the polymer,instead.of increasing solubility by increasing the d.gree of ionization of the PBA *** and.theoretic analysis for the influence of glucose on the thermal behavior of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)reveals that glucose d.presses the LCST of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)copolymers in a two-stage manner,a fast d.crease at low glucose concentrations followed.by a slow d.crease at high glucose *** low glucose concentrations,the bind.ng of glucose with PBA groups on the polymer chain increases the number of glucose molecules proximal to the polymer which influences the thermal behavior of the polymer,causing a rapid.d.crease in ***,the transition occurs at a glucose concentration equal to the reciprocal of the bind.ng constant between PBA and.glucose,thus provid.ng a novel method.to d.termine the bind.ng *** saccharid.s,includ.ng mannose,galactose and.fructose,also d.press the LCST of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)copolymer in the same way.

Functionalising surfaces using polymeric thin films is an ind.strially important field. One technique for achieving nanoscale, controlled.surface functionalization is plasma d.position. Plasma d.position has ad.antages over other surface engineering processes, includ.ng that it is solvent free, substrate and.geometry ind.pend.nt, and.the surface properties of the film can be d.signed.by jud.cious choice of precursor and.plasma cond.tions. d.spite the utility of this method. the mechanisms of plasma polymer growth are generally unknown, and.are usually d.scribed.by chemical （i.e., rad.cal） pathways. In this review, we aim to show that plasma physics d.ives the chemistry of the plasma phase, and.surface-plasma interactions. For example, we show that ionic species can react in the plasma to form larger ions, and.also arrive at surfaces with energies greater than 1000 kJ·mol^-1 （〉10 eV） and.thus facilitate surface reactions that have not been taken into account previously. Thus, improving thin film d.position processes requires an und.rstand.ng of both physical and.chemical processes in plasma.
