Mediation effects of social support on relationships of perceived environment and self-efficacy with school-based physical activity: A structural equation model tailored for Japanese adolescent girls

Background: Identifying correlates of physical activity that can be targeted as potential mediators is important for developing interventions to promote physical activity in adolescent girls. However, the mediated effects of multilevel correlates of physical activity remain poorly understood. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine direct and mediated effects of personal, social and perceived school physical environmental factors on school-based physical activity of Japanese adolescent girls. Methods: In this cross-sectional survey of the Japanese adolescent lifestyles, 344 junior high school girls were invited to complete self-report measures of age, grade, weight, height, self-efficacy, social support (family, friends and teachers), perceived school physical environment (equipment, facilities and safety) and physical activity at school (min per week during lunch time and after- school hours). Structural equation modeling analysis controlling for age was performed to examine the effects of body mass index (BMI), self-efficacy, social support and school physical environmental variables on lunchtime and after-hours physical activity. Results: The final structural model demonstrated an acceptable fit for each context-specific physical activity. During lunch recess, perceived equipment and friend support exhibited direct effects on physical activity;perceived facilities, safety, and self-efficacy were indirectly associated with physical activity through friend support. During after-school hours, both family and friend support directly affected physical activity at school;perceived safety, facilities and self-efficacy exhibited indirect effects on physical activity through family or friend support. However, there were no significant associations between equipment and after-school-hours physical activity. Regardless of contexts, BMI had neither direct nor indirect effects on physical activity. ＜正＞ To clear the details of dangerous islanding phenomena and the effects of protection under clustered installation of a lot of PV systems within a restricted area of utility grid, a new analysis method based on the Y-method was developed and the validity was verified. As a result, it was confirmed that the new method has a capability to expand to the large-scale clustered installation model including up to 400 PV systems on the utility grid. In addition, the validity of analyzed results was verified by comparing with the results of conventional Electro Magnetic Transient Program （EMTP） analysis.

The fate of zinc, lead, and iron present in electric arc furnace dusts is investigated during thermal treatment of the dust with flame-retarded polycarbonate（PC-Br） resin containing tetrabromobisphenol A（TBBPA）. Mixtures of these materials were heated under either oxidizing or inert conditions in a laboratory-scale furnace at 550 °C for 80 min. The resulting products were then characterized using X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma, and ion chromatography. The results obtained indicate that inorganic bromine evolved from decomposing flame-retarded resin almost completely reacts with metal（zinc and lead） oxides present in the dust. The highest bromination rates of zinc（78% and 81%） and lead（90% and 93%） were obtained under oxidizing conditions during thermal treatment of mixture comprising PC-Br and EAF dust at ratios of 6:1 and 9:1 w/w, respectively. The metallic bromides formed were almost entirely vaporized from the solid residues. Iron remained in an iron-enriched solid residue. The results indicated that heating such mixtures under specific conditions enables a high separation of zinc and lead from iron-rich residues within an attractive temperature range. Heating under inert conditions had little effect on the effectiveness of the bromination-evaporation of zinc, but caused more abundant formation of char, decresed bromination of lead, and resulted in sporadic bromination of iron present in the dust.

Optimization of Grafted Fibrous Polymer as a Solid Basic Catalyst for Biodiesel Fuel Production

Grafted fibrous polymer with quaternary amine groups could function as a highly-efficient catalyst for biodiesel fuel (BDF) production. In this study, the optimization of grafted fibrous polymer (catalyst) and transesterification conditions for the effective BDF production was attempted through a batch-wise transesterification of triglyceride (TG) with ethanol (EtOH) in the presence of a cosolvent. Trimethylamine was the optimal quaternary amine group for the grafted fibrous catalyst. The optimal degree of grafting of the grafted fibrous catalyst was greater than 170%. The optimal transesterification conditions were as follows: The optimal molar quantity of quaternary amine groups, transesterification temperature, molar ratio of TG and EtOH, and primary alkyl alcohol were 0.8 mmol, 80°C, 1:200, and 1-pentanol, respectively. The grafted fibrous catalyst could be applied to BDF production using natural oils. Furthermore, the grafted fibrous catalyst could be used repeatedly after regeneration involving three sequential processes, i.e., organic acid, alkali, and alcohol treatments, without any significant loss of catalytic activity.

An Environmental Control System for ALS Patient Using Finger Movement

ALS is a degenerative disease which affects the patients muscular activity in feet and hands, leading to a bed ridden status. The loss of independency affects their will to live, for this reason an environmental control system to handle the home appliances and make telephone calls is proposed. The system uses a tablet as a visual human interface so that the patient can select the desired appliance by selecting the corresponding item on the tablet screen. Based on the remaining patient’s abilities an input device that detects slight finger movement is proposed. In this paper three types of input devices are considered and their performance is evaluated by four ALS patients. Their comments about the usage of the devices are discussed in this work. Finally the environmental control was implemented on an ALS patient home and their impressions were satisfactory for the patients, relatives and care-givers.

Direct and indirect effects of multilevel factors on school-based physical activity among Japanese adolescent boys

Purpose: Background: Physical activity is a complex behavior which involves the interaction of multilevel factors at the individual, social and environmental level. However, previous studies have largely focused on psychological and/or social environmental factors and the direct impact of such factors on physical activity. There are few studies having examined how multilevel factors may interact to influence activity level. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine both direct and indirect effects of multilevel factors on school-based physical activity in Japanese adolescent boys. Methods: In this cross-sectional survey of the Japanese adolescent lifestyles, 379 junior high school boys were invited to complete self-report measures of age, grade, weight, height, self-efficacy, social support (family, friends and teachers), school physical environment (equipment, facilities and safety) and average minutes per week of physical activity during lunch time and after-school hours occurring at school. Structural equation modeling analyses controlling for age were utilized to examine the effects of body mass index (BMI), self-efficacy, social support and school physical environmental variables on lunchtime and after-school physical activity. Results: During lunch time, self-efficacy exhibited direct positive effects on physical activity. BMI, facilities, and safety were indirectly associated with lunchtime physical activity through self-efficacy. However, there were no significant relationships of equipment and social support with lunchtime physical activity. During after-school hours, family support and facilities directly affected physical activity. Self-efficacy was indirectly related with physical activity through family support. BMI, equipment, and safety indirectly affected physical activity through self-efficacy and/or family support. Iron in copper slag is in the form of iron silicate. We proposed to oxidize the iron silicate to magnetite, allowing the selective recovery of the slag’s iron content by magnetic separation. This proposal would effectively decrease the volume of dumped slag, and the recovered iron concentrate could be used for the future iron or steel making. The crystallization morphology of magnetite and hematite were studied as reaction products of the molten oxidation of copper slag. A gas atmosphere of 1 vol% of oxygen was found to effectively precipitate the iron in the molten slag as magnetite.

Structural Analysis of Thermally-Annealed Bulk Heterojunction Films Based on Sexithiophene and Fullerene

Recently, power conversion efficiencies of organic photovoltaics based on small molecules have been dramatically improved by means of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure. Moreover, to optimize photovoltaic performance, thermal annealing treatments have often been used because of the simplicity of the process. However, the elucidation of effects of thermal annealing treatment on BHJ film structure based on small molecules is still not enough. Here, we report the results of structural analysis with synchrotron radiation of α-sexithiophene:fullerene BHJ films before and after thermal annealing treatment. In particular, the open-circuit voltage was increased to as high as 0.72 V;moreover, the BHJ films based on α-sexithiophene and fullerene were also clearly crystallized by the thermal annealing treatment. In this study, we found that the optimal crystal size existed in BHJ films for high-performance organic photovoltaics.
