Solid-Phase Aromatic Nitration with Mg(NO3)2on Silica Gel

Nitroaromatics are usually prepared using a mixed acid of nitric acid with strong acids. However, the use of strong acids caused dangerous work-up and the disposal of large amounts of acid-waste. Therefore, much effort has been made on the improvement of nitration process without strong acids. We examined solid-phase aromatic nitration with Mg(NO3)2 on silica gel in order to establish the nitration process without strong acids. The nitration of 1,2- and 1,3-, 1,4-dimethoxybenzenes and 4-methylanisole with Mg(NO3)2 proceeded by heating on silica gel at 150°C for 4 - 5 h to produce the nitroaromatics. The nitration of 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene produced the nitrated dimer, 2,4,6,2’, 4’,6’-hexamethoxy-3-nitrobiphenyl, which was not isolated in other solid-phase nitration. In the cases of naphthalene derivatives, the α-nitrated compounds were obtained. In the cases of p-cresol and 2-naphthol, the esterification occurred at the hydroxyl group to give 4-tolyl nitrate and 2-naphthyl nitrate, respectively. It is synthetic interest to note that nitrate esters were isolated in solid phase. Thus Mg(NO3)2-SiO2 composite was mild reagent for solid-phase nitration. Acidity of Mg(NO3)2-SiO2 composite was determined to be pH 0.96 by the measurement of absorption spectra on a micro spectrophotometer using meso-tetra(p-cyanophenyl)porphyrin as a pH-indicator. Mg(NO3)2-SiO2 composite made acidic conditions. Therefore, it was suggested that Mg(NO3)2 reacted with proton on silica gel to form the NO+2. Thus, electron-rich aromatic hydrocarbons led the efficient nitration through electrophilic attack of NO+2. After the nitration, acidic Mg(NO3)2-SiO2 composite could be turned into neutrality by exposing wet conditions and disposed safely since the composite did not involve harmful elements. Thus the solid-phase nitration using Mg(NO3)2-SiO2 composite will provide safety and environmentally conscious chemical process.

Rosuvastatin Reduces Plasma Small Dense Ldl-Cholesterol Predominantly in Non-Diabetic Hypercholesterolemic Patients

Aims: Small dense LDL (sdLDL) cholesterol is considered a cardiovascular risk. Our purpose in this study was to evaluate the efficacy of rosuvastatin in reducing sdLDL and large buoyant LDL (lbLDL-C) in hypercholesterolemia. Methods: Fifty-six patients with a mean baseline LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration of 173.9 ± 40.5 mg/dL were treated with rosuvastatin 2.5 mg/day for 12 weeks. LDL-C, sdLDL-C, and apolipoprotein (apo) B were assessed and l lbLDL-C was calculated (LDL-C minus sdLDL-C). Results: After 12-week treatment with rosuvastatin 2.5mg, sdLDL-C and lbLDL-C were significantly reduced from 62.1 ± 23.8 mg/dL to 34.0 ± 13.4 mg/dL, p <0.001 and 112.7 ± 34.9 mg/dL to 77.2± 29.2 mg/dL, p < 0.001 respectively, and sdLDL-C/lbLDL-C ratio and apo B also decreased significantly, from 0.36 ± 0.02 to 0.32 ± 0.02, p < 0.005 and 134.2 ± 4.3 to 93.6 ± 3.5 mg/dl, p < 0.001, respectively. In diabetic subjects there was significant correlation between percent reductions in the plasma triglyceride and sdLDL-C/ lbLDL-C ratio (r = 0.58, p < 0.005), but not between the percentage decrease in plasma triglyceride and sdLDL-C. Conclusions: Treatment with rosuvastatin is associated with significant reduction in sdLDL, lbLDL and sdLDL/lbLDL ratio.

Enhancement of Ethanol Production from Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureumSchumach) by a Low-Moisture Anhydrous Ammonia Pretreatment

Napiegrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) was treated with a low-moisture anhydrous ammonia (LMAA) pretreatment by adding an equal weight of water and keeping it under atmospheric ammonia gas at room temperature for four weeks. After the removal of ammonia and washing with water, a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) was conducted for the LMAA-pretreated napiergrass (1.33 g) in a buffer solution (8 mL) using a mixture of a cellulase (80 mg) and a xylanase (53 mg) as well as the cell suspension (0.16 mL) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Ethanol and xylose resulted in 91.2% and 62.9% yields, respectively. The SSF process was scaled up using LMAA-pretreated napiergrass (100.0 g) to give ethanol (77.2%) and xylose (52.8%). After the removal of ethanol, the pentose fermentation of the SSF solution (40 mL), which contained 1.00 g of xylose, using cell suspension of Escherichia coli KO11 (70 mL) gave 86.3% yield of ethanol. Total ethanol yield reached 68.9% based on xylan (21.4 wt%) and glucan (39.7 wt%) of the LMAA-pretreated napiergrass.

A Survey of Digital Content Required for STD Prevention Education Taught by School Nurses

Purpose: In recent years, there has been concern in Japan about the increase in STDs among adolescents aged 15 - 19. In order to prevent STDs and guide adolescents toward desirable sexual behavior, this study’s goal was to examine the actual state of STD prevention education taught by school nurses as part of the school curriculum, as well as the kinds of digital content they wish to have for teaching on the subject. Method: An anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was distributed by email and leaflet. Targeting the 100 valid responses received from the surveyed school nurses, descriptive statistics were made for each survey item and comparisons were made between the early- and mid-career groups based on years of experience. Results: 70.0% of respondents reported teaching about STDs in Health & Physical Education classes. School nurses in the early-career group used ready-made materials, while the mid-career group used both ready-made and self-made materials. 95% of respondents reported that they had little or no knowledge of STDs, while 84% reported that they were “good” or “fairly good” at teaching classes on sexuality. Both groups reported difficulty with the topics of “phimosis” and “nocturnal emissions” in the physiological category, “sexual behavior” in the “sex-adjacent” category, and “sexual and reproductive issues” in the psychosocial category. Respondents expressed a need for digital content covering the topics of “sexual violence”, “sexual abuse”, “sexually transmitted diseases”, and “how to turn down sex”. The mid-career group desired digital content for more items than the early-career group, with significant differences in the pathogens involved in sexually transmitted diseases and sex-adjacent items. 32.0% of respondents answered that they had done self-study for sex education classes in the past three years, and both groups desired self-study on “sexually transmitted diseases”, with the mid-career group significantly higher than the early-career

BACKGROUND Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome(ACNES)is a condition mani-festing with pain caused by strangulation of the anterior cutaneous branch of the lower intercostal *** case report aims to provide new insight into the selection of peripheral nerve blocks for the ACNES *** SUMMARY A 66-year-old woman manifested ACNES after a robot-assisted distal *** ultrasound-guided rectal sheath block was effective for pain triggered by the port ***,the sudden severe pain,which radiated laterally from the previous site,remained.A transversus abdominis plane block was performed for the remaining pain and effectively relieved *** In this case,the trocar port was inserted between the rectus and transverse abdominis *** intercostal nerves might have been entrapped on both sides of the rectus and transversus abdominis ***,rectus sheath and transverse abdominis plane blocks were required to achieve complete pain *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first report on use of a combination of rectus sheath and transverse abdominis plane blocks for pain relief in ACNES.

Positive Effect of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Visual Verbal Working Memory in Patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Background: Working memory is an executive function that plays an important role in many aspects of daily life, and its impairment in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects quality of life. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been a good target site for transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) due to its intense involvement in working memory. In our 2018 study, tDCS improved visual-verbal working memory in healthy subjects. Objective: This study examines the effects of tDCS on ADHD patients, particularly on verbal working memory. Methods: We conducted an experiment involving verbal working memory of two modalities, visual and auditory, and a sustained attention task that could affect working memory in 9 ADHD patients. Active or sham tDCS was applied to the left DLPFC in a single-blind crossover design. Results: tDCS significantly improved the accuracy of visual-verbal working memory. In contrast, tDCS did not affect auditory-verbal working memory and sustained attention. Conclusion: tDCS to the left DLPFC improved visual-verbal working memory in ADHD patients, with important implications for potential ADHD treatments.

Cyclooxygenase-2 expression after preoperative chemoradiotherapy correlates with more frequent esophageal cancer recurrence

AIM： To investigate the relationship between cycloo- xygenase-2 （COX-2）, and vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF）, and to determine the clinical significance of this relationship in esophageal cancer patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy （CRT）. METHODS： Immunohistochemical staining was used to evaluate COX-2 and VEGF expression in 40 patients with histologically-confirmed esophageal squamous carcinoma （ESCC） who were undergoing preoperative CRT. RESULTS： Fourteen out of 40 ESCC patients showed a pathological complete response （CR） after CRT. COX-2 and VEGF protein expressions were observed in the cytoplasm of 17 and 13 tumors, respectively, with null expression in 9 and 13 tumors, respectively. COX-2 expression was strongly correlated with VEGF expression （P 〈 0.05）. There were also significant associations between COX-2 expression, tumor recurrence, and lymph-node involvement （P = 0.0277 and P = 0.0095, respectively）. COX-2 expression and VEGF expression had significant prognostic value for disease-free survival （log-rank test; P = 0.0073 and P = 0.0341, respectively）, but not for overall survival, as assessed by univariate analysis. expression correlates with VEGF expression and might be a useful prognostic factor for more frequent tumor recurrence in ESCC patients undergoing neoadjuvant CRT. These findings support the use of anti-angiogenic COX-2 inhibitors in the treatment of ESCC.

AGENT MODEL ANALYSIS TO EXPLORE EFFECTS OF INTERACTION AND ENVIRONMENT ON INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

This paper tries to find interaction rules between members and self-reform rules of members in some scientific research laboratories at a graduate school. The candidate of rules are extracted from the personality description sentences about factors： extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness in the big five theory of personality psychology. In this paper, interaction and self-reform rules are not described by personalities themselves; instead, they are described by corresponding phenomena： activity, empathy, persistence, autonomy, and analytical ability which appear in the behavior side. Each member＇s initial value is determined from the main 5-factor personality investigation to the member, and the target value is given by the member＇s self-declaration. The rule selection is carried out by the genetic algorithm, where a sigmoid function is introduced in the renewal algorithm of the value, whereby a difficulty of setting the renewal parameters is avoided. An analysis is added about the obtained rules, and the validity of this approach and the subjects for future study are discussed. Finally, consideration is extended to the effect of environment on the behavior of members to reinforce the set of rules.

Methane emissions from wetlands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The areal extent of cold freshwater wetlands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is estimated at 0.133 × 106 km2, suggesting a significant methane potential.
